our show today focuses on our local asian-pacific-american community, or apa for short. the library of congress defines the asian pacific as encompassing all of the asian continent, as well as the pacific islands of melanesia, micronesia, and polynesia. a u.s. census estimate in 2015 found 19 million residents of asian and pacific islander descent with a total u.s. population of 248 million people. in california, asian and pacific americans make up almost 21% of the population. and the bay area census in 2010 found that asians and pacific islanders make up almost 24% of the population, inching above latinos as the largest minority race across the nine counties. abc7's chris nguyen is here now with local apa leaders to talk about important issues affecting our bay area communities. >> cheryl, it's great to be here. i'm excited to introduce you to our panel of guests today. gina su is an actor based here in the bay area. she's the winner of the 2016-2017 miss asian global pageant. next, lan diep is an attorney. he currently serves as a san jose city council member represent

what's the progress in terms of getting more, you know, asian-american and pacific islander youngsters into that side of the law? johnny: so, much like the work that angelica does, our organization, the national asian pacific islander prosecutors' association, was founded in 2010 for that purpose of making sure that we reached out to the next generation, if you will, of api leaders, and specifically trying to get them interested in becoming lawyers to represent our community. but also, ultimately, it's the lawyers who become judges. and in order to have the api judges, you need to have a good pipeline of api lawyers that are either prosecuting in the community, or working with our public defenders' office, or in the civil arena. and so, our organization reaches out to high school students, college students, obviously law school students, and try--and we try to encourage them more specifically to look at careers as prosecutors, but careers in the law as well. and i think we've been successful over the last 4 years. we've had scholarship banquets, two of them. our first two were up here

abigail: well, being asian-american is a big part of my identity.nd it's important to celebrate and stay connected to that part. robert: a lot of pride in that identity. abigail: yes. robert: well, all right. let's take a look at the winning picture that you drew. and tell us a little bit about the title as well as what inspired you. abigail: the title of my art piece was "the hunger among us," and it's about food insecurity. and i was inspired because while i was thinking about what i was going to draw, earth day preparation was going on at my school. and my earth day--my school's earth day theme is, the future of food. and so, one day, i learned about the statistic that one out of four children in california experience food insecurity, and that was, like, really astonishing to me. so, i decided to depict that in the drawing. robert: wow. and, so when you kind of chose these symbols, what were you thinking of? what were you trying to kind of connect? abigail: well, i chose the school setting because it ties back to the title of my piece, "the hunge

eggs inspiration for working my family into the story, he worked his family into the story of asian americans and that gave me the idea of trying to do that in my book but yes, be choosing the words is really important for me and there's always foremost in my mind is two things, one of the narrative arc. that's always at the forefront of my mind taking about the art and i would break that down to sections of each chapter in the chapter and how the chapter plays into the narrative arc of the book and i wanted to write something that was not encyclopedic but was a story that had a beginning, middle and an end. one of the other things that was important in the writing was another inspiration here in columbia was a teacher i had named eric mckittrick and he i remember my first year of graduate school talked about the power of beautifully crafted thumbnail sketch. and that if you could work into your stories a great character and tell his or her story successfully but beautifully, that that was a way you could grab your reader and then if you had other stuff to do with it, but maybe wasn't as inte
