asian american foundation has been surveying asian american, native hawaiian and pacific islanders, orin the united states. there's some of the fastest growing ethnic groups in the u.s., with a total population of more than 20 million. the foundation says it's tracking the community's experience, since it plays such an important role in shaping the future of american society. this past week, they released their latest survey. here are some of the key findings. more than 30% of asian americans say they were called a racial slur in the last 12 months. more than half think they are at least somewhat likely to be the victim of discrimination in the next five years, only 18% say they feel accepted in the u.s. for their racial identity. at the same time, most americans of non asian descent say they don't think hate towards asian americans has increased and more than half said nothing came to mind when they were asked to name an event or a policy related to the history or the lives of asian americans. norman chen is the ceo of the asian american foundation. our survey actually asked the commu

. >> is asian american pacific pacific islander heritage month. and a new study just came out. it's called why we lead and it looks at the impacts of leadership on young asian women by looking at their diverse backgrounds and identities. and we're joined now by simon marais and the co-ceo girls leadership. she led the study. thank you so much for joining us. thank you. said that to be here. so over 2000 students participated in this study, what did you learn about the students and what stands out the most to you from the study? >> well, thank for the interest in this study. we learned quite a bit about asian american native hawaiian and pacific islander girls and gender expansive view than this first national study. one is that most of them 77% identify as leaders. now or aspire to lead in the future. second, their culture and lived experience really impact their definition of leadership. so students, study participants, i'm not seeing leadership the same way that their teachers do. >> generational immigration status. >> very influences their experience in schools. so, for examp

aapi legislative caucus took a moment to honor those who have made contributions to the asian american pacific islander community in california. the state assembly member, ash kalra, nominated our own raj mathai for that honor. he told us he wanted to recognize raj as a trailblazer in the community, and because raj has become a role model for south asian people, all across california, we didn't always see people that look like us or that represented us telling us about the news, telling us, telling us about what was happening in the community. so to have someone that represents our community and is so gifted in his craft really is not just a source of pride, but for young people that have an interest in going into mass media or communications or going into tv news, they have someone they can look to and say, look, this is not only possible, but you can excel at it. if you work really hard. yes you can. assembly member kalra continued to tell us how proud he is of raj and his work, and we have to say we are super proud of raj as well. so congratulate us my friend. rob, do you think when he comes back to

. >> a celebration was held in san francisco today honoring the cultures of the asian american pacific islandermunity. this year's aapi heritage festival was held at saint mark's square on o'farrell street. the event featured hula dancers, filipino folk dancers and local vendors. >> this is aapi month, so we've been trying to celebrate here at saint mark's. the asian community, native hawaiian community. we had a couple different speakers throughout the month. and then this is our big festival event for the for the month. >> saint mark's square provides affordable housing to seniors in san francisco and is home to a number of nonprofits. social services. >> the grand parade, celebrating san francisco's 46th carnival festival drew nearly half a million people to the mission district. some 200 low riders brought a distinct flair to the parade, and with five main stages, dozens of floats and hundreds of vendors and artists, there was really something for everyone to enjoy. the aztec dancer who blessed the parade tells us why this event is so close to his heart. >> me personally, it's been a lifelo
