we're looking at video from earlier today when the fire was at its height. look at that black smoke, thick black smoke pouring from the building. you heard a fire chief in an earlier interview that the building had been interviewed by fire officials before because of concerns of how cluttered it was. and kathleen hinnas has been here all day since the start of the fire. she's here now with the dramatic picture. it really was amazing. >> reporter: it was amazing to see it all unfold. you're looking at viewer video. this is a good example of how quickly this thing took off. you see the smoke there at first it was fairly light in color. pouring from the rooftop of the building. and quite quickly turned much darker and heavier and it really did get intense. so this was someone obviously in a neighboring building getting a close look in a short time that smoke really just filled the streets in that area. people have also been sending us photos from different areas throughout the mission district. and this was someone a few blocks away. but at the height of this t
