we have a space that looks at free communities of color that were all over the nation at the time. believe it or not. one of the poignant objects we have also shows that while there were free communities of color, there were limits to that freedom. we were fortunate to be contacted by elaine thompson, a wonderful woman in virginia who took the time to really take care of her family heirlooms. it is this handmade tin owned by her ancestor, joseph trammell. he made that to protect the freedom papers from 1852. those freedom papers were vastly important to him because at any moment's notice someone could challenges freedom and he would have to prove that. he had to register every two years in virginia and it gives us more insight on the personal experience of being free during this particular time. sadly, she has passed on but she was steward of her family's history and she was able to unpack quite a bit of her family's story. we are very fortunate because at this point, her great-niece has picked up the mantle and is carrying it forward. she wrote a book at nine with unt assistance o

take a look at what happened. it happened at 11:15 here at the trooper's townhouse.ff-duty trooper and her boyfriend were having a fight. she grabbed a service weapon and fired one shot at the boyfriend's chest. the trooper was able to call 911 and police rushed to the scene and they found the trooper had been severely beaten with cuts and bruises all over her head, neck and face. this morning they have the boyfriend's lexus towed out of here. the neighbors here haven't wanted to talk to us on camera and they've never noticed problems at the house before. state police should be able to give us an update on the medical conditions of the trooper and the boyfriend. i've been going back and forth with police and they tell me at this point they will not go with my request for the 911 history for the trooper's house to see if they've been here for domestic problems in the past and they say that's part of the investigation and they will have some sort of update later in the day and we'll keep you posted. we're live in new castle county, tim furlong, nbc 10 news. >> thanks f
