c-span:...presidents you looked at. you talk about harry truman coming in with an 87 percent popularity right after the war. >> guest: mm-hmm. c-span: but ending up with the lowest--i think it was 23 percent. what happened to harry truman? >> guest: harry truman did not care about polls, as his own... >> guest: and went out of his way to show it. >> guest: ...diaries--yes. he simply did not wish to bend to public pressures. he--again, he stressed leadership is the thing. and this sets up a problem for the presidency, because everyone's trying to bend, to compare themselves to harry truman now. all the presidential candidates did. he's believed to be a great leader. but he wasn't in his own administration. and so to be successful, in the long run, we're asking presidents to be very unsuccessful in the short run. to ignore polls in the short run can cost you your office. harry truman did not seek re-election. harry truman's approval ratings were way too low to have a reasonable chance at re-election in 1952. he ignored pol

c-span: what did you do after the university of chicago? >> guest: i went to work at time magazine as a reporter-researcher, where i was for 18 months. c-span: why did you leave? >> guest: i was offered a column at the washington times, a twice-weekly column of cultural commentary, so i moved to washington in 1984. as i say in the book, that was not entirely by accident because there was a kind of movement among people of my political beliefs to washington in the 1980s, rather like the movement of american literati to paris in the 1920s. this was the center of the action. alone among the major cities in the united states, at least part of the culture had become not only receptive to but driven by the ideas that we held dear and were fighting for. people were coming here to take jobs in the government and doing all sorts of things so that when i came to washington in early 1984, there was a kind of atmosphere of solidarity, collegiality and the sense that this was the red hot center of the united states for people on the right. it was quite a heady time. things began t

c-span: was it an integrated school? >> guest: we had, at the school, white professors but no white students; white administrators, white staff people, but no white students. c-span: in 1957, or even before that, what could blacks not do that whites could do in the south? >> guest: i--in 1957, the south was still a very segregated place. i saw--when i traveled to montgomery or to birmingham or to nashville or to atlanta--i saw the signs that said, 'white men,' 'colored men,' 'white women,' 'colored women,' 'white waiting,' 'colored waiting.' segregation was the order of the day. y--you had dual--you had dual waiting rooms, rest room facilities. and there was a tremendous amount of fear in the south during--during those years. this is the period of little rock central high. this is after the montgomery bus boycott. y--you couldn't go into a store and buy something like a--a book or--or buy clothing and then go to the lunch counter or go to a restaurant. you couldn't go into some of the drugstores and--and--and then get a prescription filled a
