you will not hear the assistant controller on any atc tapes but we can confirm the person was in the cab. there is an operation supervisor who has direct oversight over the tower. this is someone who manages everyone involved in the operation, along with an operational supervisor in training. that leads us to confirm there were five people in the tower at the time of the accident. at this time, we have interviewed the local controller , the ground controller, and the local assist controller. we anticipate having the interviews with the operations supervisor and the supervisor in training conducted no later than monday evening. for a little bit of context, this is a controller's worst nightmare. it hits everyone who works in that cab very hard. these interviews take a long time not because there is that much talking but there are several breaks for emotion so they can compose themselves to talk about what happened. we want to be thorough. if we need to go back for additional information, we absolutely will. we are getting full cooperation and access to those individuals. we hope to ha

if you're flying out of any of these small airports, it gets governed by the atc and the and the controllerslphia airport because it's all in very similar related airspace. and it is incredibly busy airspace. obviously, for those of us who live in new york, you have three major airports and a bunch of subsidiary airports, so there's probably no busier airport. but we've been talking about dca with reagan. there are three major airports in that area and a lot of subsidiary airports. this area around philadelphia has a lot of them. so this is a busy airport area. it's a busy area for air flights. and it is sadly an area where if a plane does overshoot or something happens and it doesn't land on the pad of the airport, there's a great deal of danger of getting into a an occupied area, people where people live. one of the instructions pilots always have when they're having a problem landing or taking off. when you're that close to the ground. it's the most dangerous aspect of flight, both taking off and landing. and the instruction of pilot always has is you fly that plane until it's not flyable

you know you've got atc procedures.t said maintain x altitude. >> you've got procedures for. >> what you can and can't do. you have technical procedures like the things you have on board an aircraft. so right now we're just we are at this stage where the ntsb is waiting to, to be able to read out the data from the black hawk helicopter that will give them a sense and be able to say, because so far, what we've gotten is the data from american eagle. 5342 right. so that ability to just be able to correlate that and say, why is there a difference? tower shows, you know, the helicopter at 200ft obviously is at the at some point is at the same altitude with the airplane and thus the collision. so those are the things that they will work to resolve in the coming days. >> give me a sense of how dangerous it is, though, to speculate about the cause of this crash before this data is obtained and confirmed. is it wrong to presume there are growing holes in the country's aviation safety system that led to this tragedy? >> absolute

then it was well before they got to 1600 feet there was no, there was a zero communication between the atc, the air traffic controller, and the pilots. but it seems like there might have been some action right before or right after they got to 1600 feat. >> i'm curious you do not hear a mayday from the pilot anything like that. you are exactly correct. supposed to fly the plane first and the last thing you do is talk on the radio. no mayday nothing like that. so it is very strange but i think, my gut tells me they will find it was a loss of control and probably loss of instruments somehow that led to this accident. now, one related note is if the pilot found that may be they have an airspeed indicator suddenly climbing very quickly that tells them they are not leaving the ground now they are heading toward the ground. they may have pulled back on the yoke and that could have broken something off the airplane. you can do that you can overstress an airplane. you can snap a wing go off if you act too quickly at high speeds. and do something like that could have happened. at that point they do

there are shortages at atc facilities everywhere coast to coast, and the biden administration tried to really shore up that problem by hiring 1800 new controllers just last year. this is something that will, of course, come up as this investigation unfolds. also, the other big question, aaron, about whether or not this helicopter route, route one and route four near the east side of national airport is simply too close to the airport. and we have learned from the faa that they have temporarily suspended those routes for the foreseeable future. and i've also learned from a source familiar from this investigation that informal discussions in washington are beginning about whether or not to change the need for those training flights that the u.s. army conducts along those helicopter routes, and potentially moving those to a different time of day when things aren't near as busy here at national airport. >> all right, pete, thank you very much. you're going to be back with us in a moment. we do have this breaking news coming in. let me show you the live images coming in out of philadelphia.
