the atf will be doing traces of the hand gun to see where it was bought, how long ago. that can tell you perhap it is there was some premeditation to this. it can tell you how long the suspect was planning this event. so it is something that they're assisting the military officials who really have the jurisdiction. and then obviously the first order of business is to take care of these families and the people who are injured and to make sure everybody is okay. clear the place to make sure there is no other hazards there and take care of those people who obviously were affected by this incident. >> general marks, what can you tell us about u.s. officials helping military officials in this particular case? >> there's a tremendous hand shake that's already taken place between the criminal investigative division, the cid within the army, to include the military police. they'll isolate the area and the handoff has already taken place with the fbi and atf. we'll know within hours as much as we can in terms of where this individual came from and we'll be able to go through his

we know that atf agents are there on the scene right now.be look at where this handgun was purchased, how the shooter obtained it and so forth. so in this early stage in this investigation, it is believed again that the shooter used a semiautomatic handgun. and also we're learning from sources as we've been sailiying it's believed this was a soldier on soldier incident, that's how this started. sources are telling us the attacker here was wearing fatigues. so perhaps that's what is leading investigators to believe that this began as a soldier on soldier incident. but again it's still very preliminary. as we've been reporting, agents, fbi agents as well as local and state law enforcement there on the scene, still clearing out buildings, still going building to building. the area is still on lock down. so it's a very fluid and active situation. >> do we know anything about the shooter, any political motivation? >> reporter: i can tell you that at this early stage they are still trying to learn everything they can about the shooter, wolf. sourc

at this point in the investigation we have well over 150 special agents from army cid, fbi and the atfe general mentioned as well as the texas rangers. the weapon allegedly used in the commission of these crimes has been recovered as evidence and we will be processing that at the defense forensic science centers, u.s. army criminal investigation laboratory in atlanta, georgia. we will conduct firearms forensics and ballistics testing to confirm the shots fired during these crimes came from that specific weapon. we have also con filmed through our investigation that specialist lopez purchased the firearm recovered at the crime scene on march 1st from a local establishment outside fort hood but brought it onto fort hood in violation of d.o.d., army and fort hood regulations. we have not uncovered any history of criminal convictions or previous criminal activity by specialist lopez. at this time we have not established a concrete motive, but we will do everything in our power to do so. given that the alleged shooter is deceased, the possibility does exist that we may never know exactly wh

the fbi and atf have joined the investigation. the latest tonight from john yang. reporter: outside kansas city, tom mcelderry for lafarla home when he heard a loud smack against the door. turns out it was a bullet. what did you think when you got out of the car and seen this in your door? >> well, i was pretty surprised but shocked to see what was there. >> reporter: a few days later, his check engine light came on and mechanics found a second bullet under beneath the car. then came the news of more attacks just like his. >> i almost prefer it to be an act of randomness. >> reporter: there are close calls. in one case a bullet stopped inches from where a 3.5-year-old girl was sitting. kansas city police revealed they linked 12 of some 20 cases but won't say exactly how. investigators are looking to see if others fit the pattern. >> everything is wide open, as far as what we're looking for. >> reporter: most of the attacks are south and east of kansas city with the biggest cluster in a highway exchange known as the grand view triangle. rush hour, traffic can be rea

joining me now is jim cavanaugh, atf special agent who has worked in kansas city, so, jim, what can you tell us about the kind of investigation that would be done to try to catch these kinds of shooters and what might the motive be? >> we shoulding the motive is going to be unclear right now. maybe the chief will uncover that for us, joy, in the press conference. i think the way they did it, though, is textbook. that's a great police force in kansas city, missouri, by the way. they're just really a top notch outfit. what he did earlier -- what the chief did early and what's so important is he called in, you know, the fbi, the atf, and probably the missouri state troopers, which has a great unit as well, and they all got in there and worked a giant command post to run those leads. then they enlisted public support. they were getting the tips. no doubt neighbors, friends, relatives, somebody saw some odd behavior, gave them a tip where they could put this guy under surveillance. you know, this had is a case that will probably be made through some firearms identification, of the bullets ma
