atf maintains an explosion detection k-9 training center in virginia. thanks to all of the members of congress who have supported that over the years. it takes a lot of money, manpower and k-9s to train these dogs extensively and the atf k-9s, we think, the best in the world. once they're trained, they never eat again in their life unless they find explosive. they're very motivated to find explosions. those dogs will be there. they'll use them to sweep for secondaries. and they can find residue of explosives from far-plflung pies of shrapnel or check on other suspicious items. it's part of the team of investigators. what happens here is the leverage and expertise of every department is put together. fbi and atf put bomb scene investigators in there, but they also put white-collar investigators out there and intelligence analysts out there. they do the same things together and that's what makes it so powerful. and i don't want to leave out the metropolitan police. they put their bomb squad, intelligence unit, white-collar detectives, and that's what make

we also know from the atf, they are on scene participating.y have chemists and engineers right there on the ground working this investigation. and a gentleman from the fire department confirmed that they took three people to the hospital and that right now they are actively going into buildings looking for more victims, although they don't believe that there are any, and also making sure that the buildings in that area, many of which have extensive damage, are sound. the police pio, public information officer, did stress, they don't know if anybody was in the rv at the time of the detonation of that explosive device. so at this point there are no fatalities. but the public information officer said that that could change as the investigation continues. as we learn more details in this breaking story, we will bring them to you. for now we return to "date line: extra" already in progress. >> and she still had her hands outstretched to help me. >> you don't know whatever happened to that woman? >> no, i don't. >> after the escape attempt, adam and

atf, as well as the metro national police department. a spokesperson from the police department today, don aaron, spoke a bit about the shots being fired, drying the officer to the area. they did not give any specific details about what that officer, that hero officer that began the motions to clear the area, to ensure people were out of buildings, when he saw that was so suspicious that entailed calling in a bomb squad on christmas morning. what does that tell us? that he saw something so clearly unusual that he needed to take immediate action? >> i was thinking the same thing. that area, you wouldn't expect an rv to be parked on the street. maybe it wasn't, maybe it was physically next to the building. that would certainly be an unusual thing, and perhaps you could tell by the way the position of the shots, that it was heavily laden. maybe there were no tags. they were a bunch of things than be looked at that are indicative of the possible vehicle bomb. this is an rv, this is a vehicle that can carry a great deal of weight and explosiv

so right now obviously for the fbi and for the atf, which is now on scene there as peter was talking about, the key thing is who put this rv there. because by all accounts we hear from police saying this is intentional. someone parked this rv and said this was there and there was something suspicious about it. this is just after 6:00 a.m. when they get a call. it is not like people are out on the street walking around. so it could be that the person who placed the rv there called the police to try to lure them in. but it is within a short period of time from police arriving there that this explodes and causing such extensive damage for blocks. people felt this some nine blocks away, people were able to feel the impact of this explosion. so that is something that the police and probably the federal agencies there are going to take over this investigation because right now certainly with the idea this was an intentional, a bomb it would seem at this point, with such massive force exploded in that area is going to bring in a lot of federal officials, certainly the fbi and the atf. but l

at this point, anderson, we know the atf is bringing in the national response team, bomb technicians, chemical experts. they're going to go through the crime scene analyzing pieces of debris there to see if they can figure out what was used to start off the explosion. one of the things that's happened in recent years, anderson, is that the fbi, federal law enforcement made it clear to people who sell these types of precursors, chemicals that could be used to make explosives, that they should notify law enforcement when somebody is buying large quantities of it. that's one of the things happening now, the fbi, atf are trying to reach out to the suppliers to see whether anyone bought large amounts of things that could be used to set off something like this. as you can see, it is a pretty devastating blast. >> we were talking to a bomb expert a short time ago that was saying the type of explosive will lead the investigation different directions depending what it is, commercial grade, military grade, improvised or homemade type of explosive. >> right. obviously the fact that, anderson, th

the fbi and atf are taking the lead here through the j.t. tf infrastructure, the joint terrorism task force. this is a nationwide task force consisting of state and local law enforcement agencies which allow the fbi to quickly scale investigations based on any investigative lead that may come out of nashville related to this case across the country. they are looking for identifying information right now and we are starting to see a surveillance video coming out in the case of the rv. we are also starting to see the identification of things like license plates, vehicle identification numbers, the materials that have been news here as well as eyewitness accounts like the previous report that you just had to. >> mike: your thoughts at this point from what you've seen, what you heard and what you've read about the incident? >> clearly what has happened here can be considered and defined as a christmas miracle. here it is at 1:22 a.m. in the morning, and there is this rv that is seen in that neighborhood on second street there. as you know, law e

police, atf what more are you learning? >> reporter: still waiting when we'll hear an official update from the fbi. lead agency investigating this massive blast area. you see from the images how large the area is. takes up several wlok bloblocks area. agents sifting through it finds whatever evidence they can. the timeline how it all played out. to the effect of how big this area is, we know in the past hour or so, tennessdidn' the te governor sent a letter to the president saying 41 businesses were damaged including one building collapsing. the timeline, rv sent out by the fbi, see it on your screen, arrived around 1:30 in the morning. and 5:00, 5:30 it started blaring out a warning. police were already on the scene responding to reports of possible shots fired and instead heard that warning from the rv. six officers, crediting for helping evacuate the area and saved many lives pushing people out responding to the warning. listen to what the police chief said about that moment and how many lives were potentially saved. >>

there's several fbi agents and atf agents walking through that area, looking for pieces of evidence. we have seen this in other parts of the downtown area, but this is the first time we're seeing the investigators here getting closer to this area in their search. we have seen this over the course of the last two days, where the fbi scours the entire perimeter of the blast site looking for pieces of debris. now, i just want to get back to the breaking news here. for the first time, the police here publicly identifying the suspected bomber. what we are told also is the human remains that were found, this from sources, those human remains they believe belong to anthony quinn warner. authorities are not saying how it is that they know that these are his remains. they are waiting on dna information, but there is evidence and information that they have that makes them believe those are his human remains. of course, yesterday authorities were at the home of this individual, searching his home. one of the things they were taking was dna. they need dna from him, because he's dead. obviously t

metropolitan police have been trained by atf for years to back off. years ago i had a series of bombings here, i was standing on top of a 200 pound ticking time book about three blocks from there. it's still the largest high explosive car bomb ever found in the u.s. we were able to dismantle it, get the people away. that was 3:00 in the afternoon, a block from the grand ole opry. we caught the bombers. they were responsible for five bombings, but we train the metropolitan police. get away, back off. get everybody away. don't get close. firefighters, too. if you can see it, it can see you. get away. get behind a building. back off and usually you're too close. even police officers and firefighters when i see a suspected explosive device, you're too close. keep backing the perimeter up. when those things go off, that fragmentation goes for blocks. >> jim, this one certainly could have been worse. we're glad it isn't. thanks for helping us understand this. we'll rely on you over the course of the next few days as the fbi and atf develop more information

fbi agents and atf agents sifting through mountains of debris in the street.ll sounding within buildings. >> he was not on our radar. he was not someone that was -- that was identified as a person of interest for the bureau. and so we were not familiar with this individual until this incident. >> reporter: warner was killed in the blast. investigators identify him by matching dna collected at the scene with gloves and a hat found in a vehicle warner owned. according to authorities the rv's vehicle identification number recovered from the scene was a key piece of evidence that led them to identify warner. authorities searched warner's home over the weekend. warner was a computer consultant and said he planned to retire this month one of his clients told cnn. a neighbor described him as a hermit who sort of kept to himself. the tennessee bureau of investigation confirmed warner's family has been cooperating with investigators. warner's father was once employed by at&t and the agency is looking into whether that is the motive. at&t is the parent company of cnn. t

the atf is sending in their national response team. these are some of the best bomb techs there are in the federal government, and what they're going to do is they're going to examine all of the evidence, both from the damaged buildings, the remains of this rv to see whether they can determine what this bomb was made from, whether it was set off remotely, whether it was -- whether someone was still in the vehicle when this went off. obvio obviously, there's so many strange things. the fact, as you pointed ow, there was a report of gunfire drawing the first responders there, and then, of course, that broadcast message that was being sent from what appears to be coming from the vehicle. it said at least one part of the message said if you can hear this message, evacuate now. and then shortly thereafter is when that explosion happened. obviously, this is just the beginning of this investigation. clearly, the fbi and the police that are doing this, there's still very few clues because they have put out this image of the rv, and they're try

during the news conference last hour they said dna found at the blast site matches with the fbi and atfound yesterday in a raid on warner's home in antioch tennessee, 10 miles southeast of where parked rv detonated at 6:30 a.m. in music city downtown area right outside an at&t building. police responded to a call of shots fired found the rv blaring a recorded warning to evacuate that it would explode in 15 minutes. and then to begin counting down the minutes. the explosion destroyed dozens of buildings and disrupted cell phone service in several states. three people hospitalized in stable condition but many more lives could've been lost if not for the six brave nashville police officers who immediately evacuated nearby civilians. authorities about 30 miles away in lebanon tennessee are searching a suspicious box truck parked at a stripmall playing audio similar to what was blaring from the rv and nashville. they detained the truck driver and appears to be no threat, it is not clear if this is related to the nashville explosion. charles watson is live in nashville right now please enter.
