and alan, to our athena jones, we'll go to d.c.dy were stepping up security for these 9/11 events, especially in new york, in d.c., anyway. with this new threat how did they step it up even more? >> well, you know, everyone i talked to, they said we're at a heightened state of awareness. this anniversary coming up, isn't as though it came out of the blue. they've had ten years to prepare and they know that anniversaries like this are important to groups like al qaeda and their extremist sympathizers. they say they're ready. all across town you're seeing an increased law enforcement presence. at the capitol you have more canine units, hazmat units, bomb squad units, all those specialty units coming out to -- in a show of force. the parks police in charge of protecting the monuments and memorials around town will be surveilling with technology like cameras, officers in uniform, in plain clothes, on horseback, on foot patrolling and on the metro here you've seen canine units patrolling the metro lines, doing bag searchs, unannounced s

. >> let me bring in athena jones this morning from washington. good morning to you. the president last night, some in that room had been critical of him. did he tell them what they wanted to hear last night and what was the reaction afterwards? >> well, you know, it was a fiery speech and he really riled up the crowd all the way through. he was being interrupted by applause, by cheers, by laughter at some points. he really took it to republicans in some way trying to challenge them. at one point he got applause and laughter when he said of republicans, hey, you used to be for these infrastructure projects. one of the proposals in the jobs bill. you guys used to like to build roads. what happened? he kind of threw up his arms. the people i talk to from the cbc after the speech said that they were pleased. the president took his gloves off, led a call to action. i spoke with representative sheila jackson lee from texas. let's listen to what she had to say. >> i think that this is now for his own sake a sense of reckoning that, although his temperament as president of t

cnn's athena jones joins us with details. >> reporter: joe, as you mentioned the onion a 15 tearial newspaper prompts a lot of laughs. but today bus a different story. one day after a massachusetts man arrested for allegedly plotting to use model planes to attack the capitol, a fake news story about member of congress holding children at gun point was not welcome. the trouble began thursday morning when the newspaper tweeted, breaking, witnesses reporting screams and gunfire heard inside capitol building. a short time later came this tweet, breaking, capitol building being evacuated. 12 children held hostage by group of armed congressmen. >> they were posting tweets on their own without context, and you understand why some people might have been freaked out temporarily by that. >> reporter: 20 minutes after the first tweet, congress takes group of schoolchildren hostage which included a doctored photo of john boehner and a short video shot during the stand-off with people impersonating a senator and congressman. the reaction was swift, leading the capitol police to release a statement after c

athena jones is working the detail. >> reporter: the postal service has struggled for years as more andl mail volume has fallen by more than 43 billion pieces in the last 5 years. and first class mail has dropped 25%. just weeks ago, post office officials created an uproar when they said, in order to survive they might have to close up to 3700 post offices. and stop saturday delivery. now, a new plan for even more cuts. >> it is no exaggeration to say that we are radically realigning the way that we process mail, the way that we deliver mail, and the way that we operate our retail network. >> reporter: officials will study closing 250 mail processing facilities across country in a bid to dramatically reduce the number of site business 2013. this is in addition to the 61 facilities already being considered. in a move sure to raise eyebrows, slower mail. first class mail would arrive in two to three days rather than one to three. >> our mail processing network is much larger than we can afford. >> reporter: this would mean 35,000 fewer mail processing employees. a reduction officials say
