athena is talking about this from washington, d.c. much of a problem is this vacancy issue across the country? >> well, you know, it's a rather large problem. the government accountability office has studied this problem across the country using census and other figures and put out a report that showed that between 2000 and 2010, the number of vacant properties nationwide jumped by more than 50%. so, from 7 million to 10 million. certainly, there are some states where this is a bigger problem, states that you might be able to guess because of the foreclosure crisis -- nevada, florida, also california, georgia, illinois. these are states where the number of vacant properties jumped more than 50% over that time period. so a lot of this, of course, has to do with the economy, with the recession, the housing crisis. but foreclosures aren't the whole issue. we talked to a housing expert about this. listen to what he had to say. >> clearly, foreclosures are a huge part of the housing vacancies. the distressed properties now that are on the

i want to start out with sandrasandra endo and let's begin with athena. athena, nearly 4 million homes are without power from indiana to player land from the brutal storms, the death toll is climbing. what can you tell us? what are you seeing? >> reporter: well, we know that there are six confirmed deaths in virginia, poppy. that's coming from the governor's office, governor rob mcdonald. at least 1 million customers are without power in west virginia and that's a large chunk of the nearly 4 million. the governor has declared a state of emergency due to the severe storms and we note two other deaths and an official said a man was electrocuted after he left his house and a woman in maryland, a 71-year-old woman was killed when a tree fell on her home. this is proof of how dangerous the storms can be. you can see everything behind me and nine deaths across this area show us how dangerous it is. >> especially as you mentioned some elderly people. obviously for them very dangerous and when we talk about the heat, the lack of power. you don't have air-conditio

because we need more people. >> athena jones joining us live now from washington. clearly this has not been easy for baltimore. what have been some of the rough spots getting this program going? >> well, as you mentioned, even on that street where mr. mccard is, there are still some homes that need to be rehabilitated. it's part of a long process. city officials acknowledge that not every single abandoned home is not going to be able to be saved. some are in neighborhoods that are just too distressed. it's not worth the investment. what officials have really tried to do is focus in on those areas of good potential, ones like that man's street, right down the street from a big complex of johns hopkins. that's one issue. the other is, of course, tight credit. i had several people mention to me that you have to have a developer that can buy up six city-owned properties, get another one at auction but then have to put tens of thousands of money to get it up for sale. >> baltimore really is just a microcosm of the problem. >> certainly. it's really interesting, those nu

we go to athena jones in rockville, maryland.e're hearing president obama getting updates on the storm damage. what else are you learning? >> reporter: that's right, don. the president has gotten an update from the fema director on the response activities by several of the states that suffered from the severe storms that rolled through. he's spoken with four governors in the area, ohio, maryland, virginia and west virginia. and in fact, it was caught on tape the moment that he called virginia governor bob mcdonnell. let's take a listen to what happened there. >> i'm going to -- i've got a call, the president is calling to see what he can do for us. the president was very kind as he did during several of the recent weather events. he's called me personally and asked if the federal officials were on the ground and doing the things that needed to be done and gave a direct offer of assistance, told me to call him personally if there's anything that we need. >> reporter: and, you know, of course president obama was also calling to off

let's bring in athena jones. you have talked with some of those people.0 provisions. several are at stake like the provision allowing young adults to stay on their parents health plan until their 26th birthday. the one saying insurance companies can't take away your coverage when you become ill and can't deny kids under 19 with pre-existing conditions. we caught up with a college student working two jobs to pay her medications. she is on her mother's plan. she is an asthmatic. she takes a daily medication that costs about $20 a month. without insurance coverage, though, it would cost her a little over 12 times that, which is a lot of money for a college student. her mother was a physician and an alergist says that a bad asthma attack can trigger an emergency room visit. her mother believes that if the entire law is struck down, she is hoping that congress will step in and do something to save this provision. let's listen to what she had to say. >> frankly, it is such a popular part of the health care law and it makes so much sense that i think it would be

athena, any hope that the power will be on there soon? >> well, you know, utility companies here say they are still out assessing the damage and they won't be able to get really good estimates when all the power will be back on for sometime. you can see behind me evidence the strong winds came through knocking out the power here. in montgomery county more than 200,000 customers are without power. in some cases it's a block to block situation, some blocks with power, some without. i want to quickly tell you cnn has been able to confirm in virginia two deaths from the storm that came through last night. both of these fatalities came from trees falling on the people. we're still looking for more information on that. but as you mentioned, the issue going forward here today especially is going to be these power outages as they continue in the midst of this heat wave, randy. >> the temperatures certainly, i'm not sure what it feels like there now, the temperatures are rising pretty soon. without power how will people stay cool? >> well, that's

athena jones is in washington, the komen foundation reversed that decision, but how is that controversyance there? >> reporter: well, you know we spoke to organizers here, they expect 26,000, 27,000 peep to take part in this race, men, women and children today. that is down about 10,000 people from a year ago, but fundraising goes on beyond today. this is the first race since that controversy earlier this year, we'll talk about the komen foundation, they invested more than $1.9 billion since the founding in 1982 in fighting breast cancer. these races here and around the country are an important part of the fundraising. we've spoken to affiliates about race participation, some numbers are down it's hard to say what the ultimate numbers will be in terms of the affecting fundraising. we're here with gabriel union, a global ambassador to talk about the importance of the foundation and work it does. you have been very involved in the organization over the years, you've taken part in several races for the cure. talk about how important the work of the mission is. >> i've done races in ghana a
