i want to bring in cnn's athena jones. athena you have been out the past few days in the peaceful demonstrations during the day and evening. last night the transition what a difference. >> another night of positive news. as you mentioned peaceful protests throughout the day. 18 arrests. two juveniles as of 8:00 p.m. no update on further arrests. it was successful. we saw a diverse crowd chanting and marching. people wearing shirts saying "black lives matter." we saw eli cummings. he has been visible throughout all of this. he was out on the streets at curfew time in the key intersection that saw destruction on monday night. here is what he had to say. >> i had my turn. what i can do is fight for them. i have to make sure that we hear them. they feel as if nobody hears them. i think we are beginning to get that. i'm telling you, baltimore can happen anywhere. >> now cummings was out with a bull horn in the intersection telling people to go home. some of that was directed at the media. >> there had been a lot of media out th

. >> we want to go to athena jones. athena was in the middle of when riots broke out with those young kids starting to clash with police and now you are in the middle of the cleanup. >> reporter: that's right. good morning, john and kate. that stepped up police presence you spoke about, this line of state police troopers have been here all night. they probably have changed out in terms of who has been here but they've been on this scene all night. that's because the intersection where we're now standing was one of the hardest hit. right over here is the burned out cvs. that pharmacy was looted and set on fire. you have residents out here since 6:00, 7:00 a.m. out here with their brooms sweeping up the trash and debris that littered this area last night. we saw a dump truck come three times to get piles and piles of trash bags full of debris. it's been young and old. i saw a grandmother who was out with her 5-year-old grandson. both had a broom. she said she wanted to lead by example and to show him how to better the com

athena jones, thanks. >>> we have new information. potentially explosive new information about how freddie gray may have sustained the fatal injury in police custody. we have a new allegation. "the washington post" reports a prisoner who rode in the van with freddie gray told investigators he could hear gray quote banging against the walls of the van. the prisoner believed gray was intentionally trying to injury himself. i'll say that again. the prisoner according to "the washington post" said freddie gray seemed to be intentionally trying to injury himself. it is important to note the prisoner was separated from gray with a metal partition and could not see gray. this comes after a search warrant application. gray's family denies that gray was trying to injury himself. they said we disagree with any implication that freddie gray severed his spinal cord. again, just because a prisoner inside the van says he believes gray was trying to injury himself doesn't explain what happened to gray before the van. this will be discussed no doubt.

athena we did see arrests last night. about ten. you did see a confrontation there. but it was quick, it was brief, a very different situation, what it was 48 hours ago. >> reporter: absolutely monday into monday evening, we're talking hours of unrest violence. frankly, a very dangerous situation. this was a brief standoff to be able to be brought under control. the police commissioner felt it was a success. list ton what he had to say. >> after curfew went up, we've had about ten total arrests. we're getting reports from organizations that we do not have a whole lot of movement out there the city as a whole. so the curfew is in fact working, agency the may had called. one of the interesting things that i just had happen as i exited the building to go to a meeting today, we have pretty close to 12 or 15 young adults waiting in line to become police officers at the baltimore police department. in light of the activities i asked them are you still willing and able and wanting. they very much enthusiastic about becoming members of the baltimore police department which s

athena let me bring you in first. as it looks like potentially maybe one of those bomb disposal robots from capitol police or some other law enforcement jurisdiction sort of checking this thing out first and foremost. tell me what you know. >> hi brooke. i can tell you we were standing outside of the senate foreign relations committee meeting. this is where the iraqi prime minister is meeting with senators. this is over half an hour ago. we saw commotion begin. several police officers running through the hallways speaking into their radios. we asked what was going on. they said -- we were told a helicopter of indeterminate size had landed on the west part of the capitol. of course, this is highly unusual. this is restricted air space. you need special permission to fly in this area. they did not know why this person had landed an aircraft on the west front. so that was the commotion. after a few minutes, the situation was under control. police ran over to the man, brought him into custody. he's now undergoing question

let's get more from athena jones. >> reporter: good morning, john. today is the day that loretta lynch will finally get a vote in the full senate. she waited longer for a vote than any attorney general nomination since the reagan administration. the senate first had to deal with a bill fighting human trafficking. that bill got stuck in debate over abortion language. once agreement was reached on that bill it passed yesterday afternoon with unanimous support. that brings us to today. we expect that vote to happen at 2:00 p.m. today. at least five republican senators plan to vote for lynch with the support of the 46 democrats, that brings her to the 51 votes she needs for confirmation. a lot of lynch supporters on and off the hill hope she gets a lot more votes than just the 51 she needs. still, if everything goes as expected this will be a history making moment. lynch was born in the segregated south and she will become the first black woman to head the department of justice. we'll be watching closely. john. >> athena jones, thanks. >>> time for an ea

athena jones reporting live from baltimore.day's somber funeral services a stark contrast of violence that broke amid mostly peaceful protests. long standing tension between police and the community coming to light as the furor boiled over. you can see protesters a small group, that was an undercover police car breaking out windows. several 7-eleven stores were looted. windows were broken and fans that went to see the orioles game were told to stay in the stadium for safety sake. the mayor said outsidagee ageagee ageitateors were to blame. joining me to talk more about this faraji muhammad. the mayor said the violence was committed by outsidagee agitateoragitators. is that true? >> there has been some talk about outside protesters but we're trying to figure out who and what and who was really involved. the big thing is that there certainly has been some concern in the city of baltimore especially within the community that folks are going to kind of parachute into the community to be part of these things and irritate and agitate

christine. >> athena thank you for that. >>> 46 minutes past hour.s an isis-inspired terror plot in the works in the u.s.? intercepted intelligence raises suspensions. one threat may focus on california. sunlen serfaty has more. >> reporter: christine, this is not known if it is real or aspirational threat. the investigation started after the fbi intercepted some chatter indicating a potential possible plot could be in the works. the department of homeland security would not address the specifics of the potential threat but told cnn in a statement, the department of homeland security in consultation with the fbi and our intelligence partners will adjust security measures as necessary to protect the american people. over the last few months we have made is security adjustment adjustments. many of those enhancements remain in place today. the possible threat is not necessarily aviation related, but dhs says they have enhanced screenings at airports abroad and random screenings. tsa has alerted local law enforcement for external security at airports. in

so we had athena jones at the top of the hour. she was explaining as it came out today this was news that there was a previously undisclosed stop of this prisoner transport van taking freddie gray to the police station and ultimately having the paramedics respond that no one knew about publicly. you say that's key. >> well it's key because for the interest of the police department they've been trying to show that they're being transparent. they released a timeline. for them now today, the last day, the day they're turning this over to announce there was this previously unknown stop or at least previously undisclosed, and as athena pointed out, this was discovered so late this weekend, that they were able to get the stuff off the cameras there. that's shocking frankly. the fact is that the police stops, every stop that van made was supposed to be radioed in. it was supposed to be -- over here at the police department there was suppose to be a log of every one of those stops. that was not done. the question is why? why was that not

we get more from cnn's athena jones. >> reporter: good morning, christine.y will be held a few hours from now in west baltimore. a local pastor who is one of the leaders of the demonstrations we have seen in the city over the last several days will be delivering the eulogy. freddie gray's family attended church on sunday. >> how many more of our sons and daughters must die before we are treated equal? i know i'm not the only one up to here. >> reporter: reverend bryant was ecoing many who feel they are under threat from law enforcement simply because they are black. we expect him to touch on the theme in his remarks today. we understand that maryland congress member eli cummings will be at the funeral and speak. as well as the family of eric garner. we are still waiting for answers about just what happened to freddie gray in that police van. the baltimore police department says they will finish the investigation into the incident this week and hand over the information on friday to the state's attorney's office and they will decide to proceed whether or not

athena jones, tell me where's the camera how did police find out? >> i'll tell you all of that brooke. the police say they found out as a result of their thorough comprehensive, and ongoing review of all of the public and private cameras in the area. we're talking right now about a private camera here at this convenience store. we're not far from where freddie gray was first picked up. this is a korean owned store. our producer spoke with owner. he told her that police came by some time last week likely earlier in the week. he doesn't really remember because he was busy when they stopped by. they asked to review his footage. he showed them how to look at the footage on his computer and didn't think much of it. a few hours later, they sent other folks over to make a copy of that video from his computer on a usb. we're talking about this camera here. you can see house there's two surveillance cameras. you'll also notice that they have been cut. you can see here the wires that have been cut. this is significant, brooke. this store was looted on monday

athena you had a chance to speak just a little while ago with the governor of maryland larry hogan. tell us when he said? >> hi wolf. that's right. i spoke to him after he met with naacp volunteers here at the satellite office that they just opened in a neighborhood not far from the gilmore homes housing project where freddie gray was arrested back on april 12th. i asked him how he felt about how things went last night. here's what he had to say. >> things are way better than they were and we've turned a corner dramatically. it was a completely different story monday night. we had the national guard, state police, police officers from all around the state and country helping us working with community leaders. it was a great night. it's not over yet. still a lot of frustrations still a lot of hostility, still anger in the community, and there's still people out there that want to make trouble and still some, you know folks out there that want to get things out of control that don't want to go in a peaceful way like the majority of people do. we're going to stay until the city is safe

athena jones is in another part of baltimore with more on that.ood morning, athena. >> good morning, carol. we're in gilmore homes. this is the housing project where freddie gray was arrested several weeks ago now. just a short while ago not too far from here we were in that intersection where so much has gone down over the last couple nights and it looks different today than in the immediate aftermath of monday's violence. the cvs looted and burned out has been boarded up. that wasn't the case this time yesterday. also the debris that was littering the streets is almost all gone. we saw the cleanup efforts yesterday. dump trucks having to come several times to take away and haul away trash bags filled with the debris there. the community really stepping up to try to clean up the city. one woman telling us we're embarrassed by what happened monday night. we can do better than that. we want to make sure that we do better than that. things are returning at least looking like they are returning to normal. at that same intersection shutdown this time

let's bring in athena jones.ot always been a stranger to it. >> no, he hasn't. so far he's not seeing a lot of pressure to step down. his democratic colleagues like senator harry reid and others are saying let the justice system do its job. senator reid said in a statement i appreciate senator menendez' willingness to temporarily step down as ranking member. he has been a consistent champion for the middle class. as i have said about both democrats and republicans, our justice system is premised on the principle of innocent until proven guilty and senator menendez should not be judged until he has had his day in court. now, the nrc is saying menendez betrayed the trust of new jersey families and that his actions reinforce all that the american people believe is wrong with washington democrats. so republicans are making hay out of this without calling on him to resign. >> okay. that's really interesting. and then athena you have menendez in his defense here is that this is a friendship that he had with this doctor

and on capitol hill cnn's athena jones. athena to you first. tell us about this compromise. >> reporter: good morning, carol. of course this compromise reached between the top democrat and top republican on the committee was aimed at getting more democratic support for this bill to overcome that veto threat from the white house. the changes were enough to get the white house on board. here are two things that have changed. the 60-day review period has now been cut to a maximum of 52 days. there's an initial review period. more time gets added on if congress sends a bill to the president's desk and even more days get added on if he vetoes that bill. the congress has a month to review this iran deal and decide whether to approve of it disapprove of it or take no action and during that time the president cannot lift the congressionally imposed sanctions on iran. another big change was that the earlier bill had required the president to certify that iran was not supporting terrorism anywhere around the world. that requirement was changed to reports

athena jones joins me now with that side of the story.eporter: good morning, carol. that's right. there was an organized cleanup effort organized over facebook that was set to start around 10:00 a.m. when we came over here to one of the hardest hit intersections in west baltimore, people had been out cleaning already since 6:00 or 7:00 in the morning. all ages young and old, all races. a woman had her 5-year-old grandson with her and she wanted to show him what he should do and train him up in the way he should go to be a good example. she was leading by example. i can show you that we're outside the burnt out cvs. we've seen young children and older folks sweeping up since early this morning. i want to play for you a bit of two interviews we did with two people out here cleaning up. one young woman talked about why it was important to come out. that's followed by a 15-year-old boy who also talked about what this meant to him to help out. go ahead and play that sound. >> i am a resident of this area. i think we owe it to ourselves to do b

hi athena. >> reporter: hi carol. curfew has been credited with helping keep the peace and the calm here on the streets of baltimore, a very calm night last night, but it's also beginning to come under some fire. we're here on a busy commercial strip in east baltimore. some of these stores were looted but others are reopening. we've seen one or two open every few minutes. people rolling up those gates, those roller gates. that's fine for these stores but if you are a restaurant a bar, a nightclub, even a 24-hour gas stations they're all being affected by this 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. curfew put in place tuesday night, expected to last until next tuesday. we spoke with the chamber of commerce president who said that businesses like that are being affected very very negatively. they are losing money, and that's why there is some discussion about potentially ending the curfew early. "the baltimore sun" reported that the mayor's office is considering putting an end to that curfew before next tuesday. our own chris cuomo as

athena jones, new hampshire. >> 20 years ago today the united states suffered one of the deadliest terrorttacks the nation had ever seen when a truck bomb went off in oklahoma city. 168 people lost their lives. 19 of them children. hundreds more were injured. memorial now stands at the site honoring those who lost their lives and the people whose lives were affected forever. the memorial museum hosted a reunion between the rescue workers, investigators and law enforcement officers of that day. former president clinton who was in office at the time of the bombing will return to deliver raerks during a remembrance ceremony. there severe weather may affect the ceremonies marking that 20th anniversary. this was the scene on saturday afternoon in oklahoma city. wind gusts up to 60 miles per hour were reported by cnn affiliate kfor. it is an incredible sight with more severe thunderstorms ripping the south. we want to bring in derek. we know this is typical for this area. we hope it will not mar what is an already grim event. >> it does appear the bulk of the energy creating the severe weather

i want to bring in athena. where are you, athena jones? i know you're watch aring the protests pretty close to all of this as well. >> reporter: hi wolf. i am. i'm right behind the police line here and miguel brought this up but we are on north monroe street. the same street of the church where freddie gray was funeralized earlier today. we're not far away. this is taking place, a very close dasistance. it started outside of a high school. high school students were doing what they calmed a "purge." a protest to freddie gray's death, but it became violent when they started throwing all kinds of things shells boards we have begun to see more an more police officers putting on gas masks. we were warned about two hours ago they could end up deploying tear gas to try to disburse this crowd. that's when we saw a police chopper flying lower than i've ever seen one, three, four stories in the air, warning the crowd to disburse saying it was an unlawful gathering. that did not happen all that time ago. now we've begun to see many of the people doin

cnn athena jones is in baltimore.out whether protesters plan other demonstrations? >> reporter: the wake is taking place right now it began about an hour ago and will continue for the next several hours in the west baltimore neighborhood of freddie gray. while there isn't, i guess, an official hiatus on protesters seems to be an unofficial hiatus. no organized trottests we know of today. the next big event will be next wednesday, a town hall to talk about the state of play here. you heard from freddie gray's sister calling on demonstrators not to be violent to remain peaceful. she is echoing calls by the mayor and other officials, including some leaders of these protests. things did get out of hand yesterday after a largely peaceful day ended in skirmishes. the latest we have is 34 people were arrested overnight. six police officers suffered minor injuries in addition to store fronts that were vandalized. the baltimore p.d. tweeted extra police officers will be deployed downtown and across baltimore to ensure everyone

athena jones is in baltimore. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, carol. here the streets have been calm for the last two nights, and even more calm last night than the first night of the curfew and the curfew has been credited for keeping the peace. we are here on a commercial skreup in east baltimore and the businesses are just opening for the morning and we have seen some of them roll up their gates, and the problem is if you are a restaurant or bar, this 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. curfew is causing you to lose money and that's one of the issues that is bringing the curfew under criticism. and there is a report today in the baltimore sun saying the mayor's office is considering lifting the curfew before the end of the week because of the affect on businesses. >> i have made no decision about lifting the curfew. we re-evaluate it on a daily basis. >> they can't be trusted to live their own lives? >> we want peace in our community and we are going to do everything we can to make sure we have peace moving forward. >> and they are going to look at it on a day

athena jones is standing by live right now in baltimore. also joining me ryan young outside the cvs which was burned and loot and a site of unrest and tension. what is the update, the latest from the governor? >> hi, ashleigh. we're standing outside an naacp satellite office ta was just opened today. a result, something the naacp asked for to come out of this tragic incident of the death of freddie gray. the governor came here to meet with the members, volunteers here. th he thanked them for their help helping tamp down the situation, helping prevent a repeat of the violence monday night. it was a lot calmer night, fewer a arrests. he asked the naacp to continue to help talk to the community, make sure people don't resort to violence again. instead resort to positive, constructive ways to move forward. he also talked about a website he's begun, maryland unites allows people to sign up to help clean up baltimore, to help do anything to help the community. so he said a lot of people have been asking about ways they can help and that's one thi

cnn's athena jones in baltimore for you. >> speaking of those questionable circumstances there are still a lot of unanswered questions about how freddie gray came to be so severely injured during that police van ride two weeks ago. but today the focus is on honoring his memory and saying good-bye to him. gray's family has asked that there not be any protests today. this after that largely peaceful demonstration on saturday ended in violence. there were skirmishes, vandalism, six police officers suffered minor injuries. a lot of supporters have been saying that they need the time and the space to heal after this incident and that protests that can become violent, those end up being distractions. one people who said that is congressman elijah cummings. he represents about half of the city of baltimore. and he'll be one of the speakers at today's service. yesterday he spoke emotionally about the toll this incident has taken not just on gray's family but on the baltimore community as a whole. he told me he wants to see the baltimore police department make changes so that it can become a mode

let's bring in cnn's athena jones in new hampshire.see anything striking a chord out there? >> reporter: good morning, we've heard a lot of hopefuls dashing president obama's policy. and one saying the president only cares about his library and his legacy. one of the potential contenders who has been pushing his case here is former florida governor jeb bush. but the question he can't seem to state is the question of how he'll distinguish himself from his father and his brother. >> reporter: he hasn't formally announced his candidacy, but jeb bush is already acting like a presidential candidate. fielding questions from granite state voters on top issues like immigration reform. >> deal with the folks that are here illegally in a rational and thoughtful way. my suggestion is earn legal status. >> reporter: that's at odds with many conservatives. assign the former florida governor isn't afraid to stick to his principles on this and other issues. he says he enjoys engaging with voters in the intimate settings. >> this is what i expect. thi

athena jones, thank you so much. while this incident may have caught u.s. capitol police and bystanders off guard, there was one witness ready and waiting for the aircraft to make its descent. he's a reporter who was tipped off. the pilot wanted someone to know his story in case the pilot got hurt or even killed. and ben montgomery with "the tampa bay times" who's been writing about this and has the scoop on the whole story joins us now. ben, what can you tell us about this pilot? why did he do this? >> well he's been thinking for a very long time about a very boring issue, campaign finance reform. and his mission was to do something big, the sort of mix of p.t. barnam and paul revere as he described himself, and fly a gyrocopter and deliver a letter to each member of congress that spells out how he feels about campaign finance. money corrupting elections. >> i saw a tweet that you wrote today hoping that no one got hurt. do you think the pilot understood that he could have been killed doing this? >> oh yeah, he knew that was certainly a possibility. he was

we'll have more on that as we get it. >> athena jones, thanks so much.ciate the explanation. >>> also this just into cnn, the reserve deputy who shot and killed a man in tulsa, oklahoma has just pleaded not guilty. robert bates showing up for an initial court arraignment after all this happened moments ago. he's currently free on $25,000 bond. that's obviously not him. that's the incident that took him to court. the judge also granted bates permission to go to the bahamas for a family vacation. let's get some reaction from cnn legal analyst sunny hostin. mr. bates didn't have to show up today but he did. >> it's not unexpected quite frankly that he pled not guilty. this is the very beginning of the process for him when you get arraigned. he has his attorney. this is not a clear cut case. second-degree manslaughter while it exposes him to four years in prison, we're talking about a negligence crime. you may have a couple people on a jury assuming this doesn't plead out which i think this is a case that's ripe for a plea talking about a 73-year-old man who

let's get to the athena jones, she's joining us from the corner of mozer and freemont. how did police find out about the previously unknown stop? >> reporter: well, we found out in the police press conference that was held a short while ago that it was discovered. this is a quote, discovered from a privately-owned camera. but there's still a lot of questions about which just camera. i'll explain why. this is the stop. this is a grocery store, it's owned by a korean family. the owner does not speak very good english, and so we're going to try to get someone who can talk to him who speaks korean. you can see out here the surveillance cameras outside, it's unclear when those were unplugged or cut. we haven't been able to find that out. we can tell you this this store was looted on monday night by some young people in the area who pulled out the air conditioner and went inside. we're told from a neighbor who has been helping this family make a police report, helping them call 911, she called several times on monday night, the police did not come. she was told by the owner h

joining me from capitol hill athena jones, cnn correspondent here. first, what is in this bill?er: good afternoon. new information coming in from my colleague, jim accosta at the white house. he says that according to josh earnest, the president would be willing to sign the bill as it stands now, the compromise reach between chairman corker and the ranking top democrat on the senate foreign relations committee, senator cardin as it stands. if it's changed during the committee process that we see getting underway all bet are off. let's tell you what's in the new compromise agreement. this bill would, of course require the presidents to submit the final deal to congress for the final review. during the review period the president would not be able it temporarily waive the sanction that's have been imposed by iran by congress on iran. congress would have up to 52 days to review the bill. there's an initial 30-day review period. then after that if congress sends a bill either a resolution of approval or disapproval to the president, there's another 12 days taxed on. all in all, it's

cnn's athena jones has more on that.'s reason for skepticism about friday being a day of closure, is there not? >> that's right. good morning, chris. the public is hungry for answers, but they're not going to get all of the answers to all of the questions about what happened to freddie gray on this friday. this is just one step among many steps in what's likely to be a very long process. that police investigation continues, they hand over what they have to the state's attorney. but it's not at all clear how much of that is going to become public. and certainly they're not going to know all of the answers to those questions. i can tell you, chris, that we're here in the center of things. this is a central intersection where a lot of the events have gone down over the last couple of days. outside of the cvs you can see behind me this was the cvs that was looted and burned on monday night. folks around here are still trying to pick up the pieces. that cvs now boarded up. that wasn't the case yesterday at this time. and also

let's go to cnns athena hill.reporter: it was quite a scene for several moments. it wasn't at all clear what was going on and how big of a threat there was. i was standing outside the senate foreign relations committee room on the first floor of the capitol. that's where the iraqi prime minister was meeting with members of the that committee. of course a leader like that is going to travel with a lot of security. there were several security officers police officers outside of that room. that's when we began to hear that familiar distintive crackling on the radio. we were asking what's going on. suddenly we saw at least a half dozen uniformed officers running past us in a couple directions heading outside, we figured out. we asked what's happening. we were told at the time a helicopter landed on the west front of the capitol and police didn't know why and didn't know who it was. there was certainly a lot of confusion. it ended up being this smaller aircraft, this gyrocopter. even though the capitol was not evacuate
