athena tell us about the memorial behind you. >> wolf let me get out of the way here. you can see this memorial behind me, a makeshift memorial that has been growing by the hour. it's very hot out here more than 88 degrees, very humid. yet there has been a steady flow of people young and old. there were several young boys who laid flowers a short while ago. there was a man who came and knelt to pray. people are passing out water. all to pay respects to the victims of that terrible shooting. last night there was a prayer service, a bringing together of several presbyterian churches white and black, from in and around charleston. they packed into a church behind this church this is an area of many churches as you know. there were many white faces, black face people rubbing each other's back standing in a circumstance toll offer words of comfort and to pray. this has been about coming together. we heard from the charleston mayor who said this is a city that wants to unite in prayer and healing. as part of that, they're holding a vigil later on tonight, 6:00 p.m., in an ar

athena jones is at a vigil for one of the family members. what's going on athena. >> reporter: don, i was unable to hear what you said as you came to me but i want to point out this makeshift memorial at emanuel ame. it's more than quadrupled in size. there are periodic gatherings laying down flowers, setting up wreaths. a few minutes ago a young woman had a sign that said "never again is now." what's been remarkable about this outpouring of grief for this entire community is how diverse it's been. it's been a mixed group. very multiracial. we saw several young white boys 4 or 5 years old who came up to lay flowers as part of that memorial. we saw an older white male kneeling to pray. last night when i attended a prayer service just behind at mother emanuel, there was a group of white and black, a sea of people packed that church all of them joining together doing prayer circles to try to comfort each other and to heal. you may have mentioned or heard earlier the mayor of charleston joe riley talking about a city that wants to come together

athena jones joins me along with bill carter and jeffrey toobin.news conference where trump addressed this, what was it like? contentious i understand? >> it was quite contentious. in a small, crowded room. half of the questions more than half of the questions actually were about these comments he made controversial comments that are now cost him this relationship with nbc. and with univision. so it was very contentious. several journalists were shouting at mr. trump. it seemed as the there was certainly folks who took his comments personally. i should mention that before the event there were people protesting outside, chanting about his hate speech. what they called his hate speech. and saying that nbc should dump trump which of course nbc did do in the end. one person had a donald trump pinata. i should till you donald trump was defiant. he is not backing down. he is really doubling down. he even blasted nbc. he said blasted them for standing behind lying brian williams but not behind people that tell it like it is. as unpleasant as that may be.

cnn's athena jones joins me now from chicago with more.>> reporter: good morning, carol. so as you can see, donald trump hasn't really been backing down from what was at the heart of those comments about mexico about illegal immigration. it anything he's been doubled and tripling down on them and we expect we could hear more of that at this speech later on today. this is the city club of chicago. we expect about 300 people and we're told this event, the tickets sold out quite quickly and there is a waiting list. so a lot of demand to see donald trump, but we've heard him over the last several days talk about wanting to build that wall. also talking about how he plans to sue univision for dropping the miss usa pageant. i have to tell you his aide tells me we should not expect a policy speech. we expect him to lay out what it's campaign calls his vision for how to make america great again. but it's always interesting to listen to donald trump speak because he's famously outspoken. he calls himself blunt and often we know he's controversial.

our correspondent athena jones is following the developments on capitol hill. tell us what's going on because these are really dicey moments up on capitol hill. >> yeah. interesting numbers there, wolf they sort of reflect the debate we've been seeing since last night when the senate came in for the rare sunday session. there was heated debate on the floor on both sides of the issue. right now we do expect the senate to vote later this week possibly as soon as tomorrow on that bill that already passed the house some time ago. the usa freedom act. that bill would reinstate these programs but when it comes to that most controversial one, the bulk phone data collection it would make some important changes. it would take that data out of the hands of the government out of the hands of the nast and leave it with the telecommunications companies. that is the bill that we expect to be voted on in -- as soon as tomorrow. we also know that senate majority leader mitch mcconnell wants to see changes to make sure the program can still function if you make the switch inter
