we begin in our kabul bureau tonight, with nbc's atia abawi. good evening >> reporter: last week they blocked google, hoping to stop the violent demonstrations, but today, hundreds took to the streets following the example of other muslims, in response to the anti-muslim film produced in california. afghan police put out the flames of fury and anger. violent is -- demonstrations hit kabul today police responded with stones and tear gas. this man says we will never tolerate any mockery of our prophet. tear gas, along with water canons, were used to control crowds in indonesia, the world's largest muslim-populated country elsewhere, they threw cocktails. and in lebanon, they peacefully marched through the streets, men, women and children, and the leader of hezbollah came out, calling on the protesters to protest against what he calls america's attempt to sew strife between christians and muslims. but nato has more to worry about, over the weekend, eight service members were killed in taliban-claimed attacks, six were americans four americans were

nbc's atia abawi is in kabul tonight. >> reporter: good evening, lester. nato says the service members killed were victims of another insider attack. a local policeman returning from a security operation turned his gun on them, killing two and wounding three others. also in helmand last night 20 taliban insurgents breached the perimeter of camp bastien, one of the largest nato bases in the country. also home to the u.s. marine base camp leatherneck. using small arms fire and rocket propelled grenades they killed two u.s. marines, injuring several others. they also released this video, claiming to show the aftermath of the attack. the taliban said they attacked the base to avenge the anti-islamic movie that's outraged the muslim world. they chose that base because they heard that's where prince harry was based. today nato says that the prince was in no danger and britain said it doesn't plan to cut short his deployment to afghanistan. today happens to be prince harry's 28th birthday. lester? >> atia abawi in our kabul bureau tonight. >>> the outburst of vio

nbc chief pentagon correspondent jim miklaszewski and atia abawi in kabul.st to you at ground zero, talk about the feelings, the memorial, the ceremonies today. >> well, andrea, each commemoration, each anniversary is unique and different, powerful and special, and this one certainly was as well. it was smaller, more intimate, more private and less public if you will, although certainly open to the public. about a thousand people or so gathered here at ground zero. you may recall last year on the tenth anniversary there were tens of thousands of people who were gathered in all of downtown new york in this area, so a lot more low key this time. one of the big differences, this year there were no politicians or elected officials invited to come and speak. they were invited to come and participate and be a part of the ceremony but the organizers of the event wanted to make it less political and more and specifically about the families who came here in the hundreds again. now one big difference is that there is a lot more going on here at ground zero. you can se

atia abawi in kabul, afghanistan.now about the insider attacks and some of these other issues such as jalalabad? >> hi, andrea. the insider attacks a big issue here. the joint operations that mic mentioned obviously are still suspended here in afghanistan but large criticism now coming from the -- to the obama administration about that from senators john mccain, joe lieberman and senator lindsey graham. in a statement they blamed the obama administration saying we are concerned that the rush to build up the afghan national security forces as quickly as possible, so that u.s. forces could begin withdrawing on the administration's timetable, has contributed to the problem of the so-called insider attacks. they do have a point when it comes to the fact that they did build up the afghan security forces much too quickly. a couple years ago the goal was to bring the afghan security forces to a level that was more than 300,000 and we said it two years ago and we've said it now, it seemed to be more about quantity than qualit

atia abawi is in kabul for us. talk about what's happening in afghanistan and announced yesterday, atia, which you reported on this very dramatic change in our rules of engagement for american troops and their afghan partners. >> hi, andrea. dramatic is the perfect choice of words when it comes to this. apparently nato here in afghanistan decided to suspend joint -- most joint u.s./afghan operations in the country for fear of coalition partners lives. they say it has to it with the insider attacks we've been seeing, when afghan forces turn on their coalition partners, together with this anti-islamic movie that's been released that has caused outrage among some in the muslim world. they feel because of this movie, more afghan soldiers and police officers may turn their weapons on to american and nato soldiers. this is why they say they've suspended most of these operations. they do say it's a temporary suspension, but no matter how you look at it, this is very drastic and dramatic because nato's mission and motto has

nbc's atia abawi joins us live from kabul. what's the latest? >> reporter: hi, richard.oday was a violent day of protests here in afghanistan. we've seen days of protests since friday. and they were all very peaceful up until today, outside of the city of kabul at a main road, there were hundreds of demonstrators coming down that road where a nato base is located, as well as western compounds, western security companies living there. they were throwing giant rocks at the security compounds, they were throwing it at the police officers who were trying to tame the demonstration, according to the police here in afghanistan in kabul. they say that at least 45 of their police officers were injured primarily with minor injuries, including the police chief. but they refuse to fire at the crowd, afraid that it would agitate them even more. according to the district police chief, he says there were agitators among the crowd, pushing these people to turn violent, therefore setting blaze to two police vehicles at least. four vehicles in total. and there were injuries among the crow

nbc's atia abawi reporting. >>> there are conflicting reports on whether or not the deadly attack on the consulate in libya was a planned assault or a spontaneous reaction to that antiislamic film. the gunman who killed ambassador stevens and three other americans on tuesday may have spent months preparing for their attack. he said the raid which came on the anniversary of september 11th was carried out by militants with links to al qaeda. but susan rice, the u.s. ambassador to the united nations, offered a different explanation yesterday on "meet the press." >> our current assessment is that what happened in benghazi was, in fact, initially a spontaneous reaction to what had just transpired hours before in cairo, almost a copycat of the demonstrations against our facility in cairo which were prompted, of course, by the video. what we think then transpired in benghazi is that opportunistic extremist elements came to the consulate as this was unfolding. they came with heavy weapons which unfortunately are readily available in post-revolutionary libya, and they escalated into a much mo

atia abawi is in libya. >> reporter: what we do know is that it began at 10:00 last night when around 20 insurgents according to nato were able to breach the perimeter of camp bastion which also contains camp leather neck, a u.s. marine base down there. this base holds around 10,000 both american, british and danish troops down there. it's one of the biggest nato bases in the country for that matter. the insurgents were about apparently able to breach the perimeter with small arms and indirect fire. we also hear there were suicide bombers among that group. they were able to damage buildings as well as aircrafts. and according to the taliban, they say the reason they attacked camp bastion was because a it's one of the biggest nato bases in the country, b, in response to this anti-islamic movie that has caused outrage throughout the entire muslim world, and c, because prince harry is at camp bastion. they made a promise when he arrived they would attack and their first priority they said was to kidnap him. if they couldn't do that they said that they would kill him. >> so atia,those tha

we begin first with nbc's atia abawi joining me live from kabul. , we've had insighter attacks, we have -- insider attacks, u.s. forces, nato attacks against civilians, but most notably perhaps we've had that attack, the taliban claiming responsibility for the attack on a key u.s. base, u.s. joint nato base on friday. >> that's right, andrea. it's ban violent weekend here in afghanistan and it started friday night in the overnight hours when the taliban breached the perimeter of that nato base you're talking about. one of the largest nato bases the afghanistan i should say. when i've been there, i thought it would be possible to breach but -- impossible to breach, but 15 made their way in, killed two u.s. marines in their attack and destroyed u.s. marine harrier jets on the runway there, causing millions, hundreds of millions of dollars of damage and then this weekend we saw more of these insider attacks we've been talking about all year. two british soldiers were killed and four americans were -- soldiers were killed by afghan police officers, peop

nbc's atia abawi is in kabul with more. hello to you. what's the latest? for insider attacks. 51 nato coalition members have died this year alone from these insider attacks. that's up from 35 in all of 2011. before that in 2007 and 2008 there was a grand total of four coalition soldiers who died from these insider attacks. this one today occurred in zabul province in southern afghanistan. it seems from local officials that they may have been duped by the police. the police were at a security check point according to one afghan official. they say that they were under attack and called for help from these american service members. when they came, some, at least one, turned his weapon on the american service members and killed four of them, wounding at least two others. according to the taliban, of course, they're taking the claim of responsibility for the attack. they say it's to avenge this anti-islamic movie that has claimed outrage in the muslim world. we should also mention two other nato service members were killed yesterday in helmand province. they we
