cnn's atika shubert is there. if you can, take us through, walk us through what happened this morning at the airport now that we kind of know a lot more. >> reporter: well, we know the attack happened at around 8:00 a.m. people were gathering at the check-in desk, getting ready to departing on the flights. family members coming to say good-bye to family members who were getting on planes. what we know now from investigators is that the three suspects arrived apparently by taxi, moved into the terminal and in that surveillance video photo, you can actually see them pushing luggage trolleys with suitcases on them. now, what we understand is that one of those -- at least one of those suitcases was left behind at the airport and later detonated by a bomb squad here. they believe it did have a bomb in it. so that may actually give us a clue to how these explosives were put together. the other thing to notice in that photo is that each of them -- each of the men in black is wearing one glove. there's some talk among ana

's going on? >> there's been a big raid going on here, anderson. when we got however over an hour ago there was police activity near the cordon behind me. there was a police chopper that showed up and it hovered above the area for i would say at least half an hour and there was definitely someone with a rifle who was in the open door of that helicopter, repeatedly pointing at some sort of area. also had a search light on. we've also seen a lot of police vehicles going into the cordon, a lot going out. the military has been around as well. the latest we have from the authorities, that is apparently they have recovered some chemicals, some explosives, some nails, as well as isis flag. so, clearly the raid here has netted something. it's unclear whether anybody has been taken into custody. but also, the entire area inside the cordon has been emptied of people. they've taken all civilians inside into buses, all out, waiting here for hours, as they conduct thes

i mean, we were surprised on the ground, my colleague, senior international correspondent atika shubert who was there from 4:00 in the morning was hearing blast after blast after blast. it's difficult to know if this is an controlled explosion, a stun grenade, a suicide bomber blowing himself up. it is normal for these raids to last hours and hours with a lot of heavy firepower being used as police try to, in the case of s saint-denis, they were trying to capture abdelhamid abaaoud. >> let's remind everyone what that was like. >> i'm just going to duck out so we can push in and take a look at that apartment building that was the focus of these raids. we can see forensic experts have been moving around inside those rooms. they've been taking photographs. you can see the aftermath of those blasts that were heard. all the windows have been blown out. you can see the pock marks of heavy weaponry around those windows. we've spoken to a number of residents and eyewitnesss who told us it all started about 4:30 a.m. they heard gunfire, they heard grenades. we've managed to get on to a roof -- >

atika shubert is live at the scene with the breaking details, learning more. >> reporter: this is somethingis the car several hundred meters behind me. it apparently was driving down the road right around rush hour when it just blew up before people's eyes. now police are saying they know there were explosives inside the car, and they're treating this at the moment as a criminal investigation, a homicide investigation. they are not considering, yet, as a terror investigation. so there are no counter-terror police here. they're not ruling it out at this point, but they haven't found, they're still sifting through the forensic evidence. it only killed one person, the driver of the car. what they're tryingto figure out now is whether the driver was targeted in the explosion or whether the car was carrying explosives. so a lot of this will depend on the forensics evidence they're able to gather which they're doing right now, michaela. >> let us know what else develops in that. we know it's early in the investigation. >>> also developing overnight, three veteran chicago officers are recovering a
