atika shubert is there among the protesters and now is joining us live, i understand.t looks like things have calmed down a bit. >> reporter: they have calmed down a little bit over here but they have actually still taken over the plaza in front of the conservative party headquarters, and, market, if you can look down there, you can probably see a maz of hundreds of students that have gathered there in front, and basically what's happened is they have taken over the plaza. the road in front of the conservative party headquarters. they've lit a huge bonfire and smashed their way into the lobby, effectively taking over the lobby. so it's gotten a little bit out of control. and there was a very minimal security presence initially. it was a very peaceful demonstration at the beginning, a very festive atmosphere and now it seems it has gotten out of control. riot police have arrived, however, on the scene, and are trying to gain some control over it. it's going to be tough because they have taken over the road and over the lobby of that building there. we'll have to see. cl

atika shubert for us. atika-g to see you.> we have yet another breaking story we're learning about right now. susan candiotti joins us on the phone with more information about that package bomb found almost two weeks ago at east midlands airport in england. susan, what are you learning? >> reporter: hi, tony. well, we're learning today from a senior u.s. counterterrorism official telling cnn that that package bomb that was found, as you indicated, a good 12 years ago at east midlands airport in england was set to explode some six hours after it was found. now, you'll remember, tony, that last week it was revealed that it was only about 17 minutes from exploding. that information being released by senior officials in the uk. however, this is new information coming out after authorities had more time to look over that petn bomb that was contained in that parcel package, you'll recall. >> right. >> that was being shipped from yemen originally, a ups package in this case, that was stopped in england. they looked it over not once

atika shubert has been in the thick of things really for the better part of her day and she is now inondon and joining me live. i can see atika still many, many students behind you. let's just begin by setting the scene for me and explain how this protest was essentially starting off peacefully and then it all went awry. >> reporter: that's right. it's pretty much over now. what you're seeing behind me here are really the last of the protesters are just being cleared by police, being interviewed. it's really just a handful now. it started earlier this morning with a massive protest. about 40,000 student demonstrators is the estimate. what they're protesting of course is that hike in tuition fees. tuition fees are due to triple. a lot of students say they simply can't afford it so there was a lot of anger on the streets but nobody expected it to turn as violent as it did. i'm going to quickly walk around here and show you what's happened, some of the destruction here. this is basically the building where the conservative party headquarters is. and if you can look behind there, that's t

let's talk more with atika shubert. what's the reaction been like since these quotes have surfaced?read of hiv/aids, these are very welcome comments. they really want to see more of this kind of stuff coming out of the vatican for a number of reasons. for one thing, for catholics around the world, it is a way of accepting what has been known in health circles that condoms prevent hiv/aids. this is a message they want to spread. i talked to the head of the unaids and he says the biggest impact is that catholic aid agencies will now consider when they do their work, promoting the use of condoms. he says they may not do it right away but they are now actually considering it because the pope said it may be justified using condoms in certain circumstances. that's a big boost for those who work to prevent hiv/aids. >> the head of the hiv/aids fighting group says it's a step forward but didn't the pope say last year it was not okay to use condoms in africa? >> he did. he said it was causing the spread of hiv/aids and that's what got him a lot of neglect comments and condemnation from healt
