cnn's atika shubert is at the hospital where many are being treated right now. and atika, we are getting the updates and the number as it stands now, and it may change is that 10 among the dead, 10 of the 84 were children. and we are at 202 injured, and i cannot imagine the scene where you are. >> yeah, it is staggeringly high number of young children that have been killed in this attack, and the reason for that is that it was a fireworks display and a family event. everybody was out for a good time, and basically the fourth of july here, and it was bastille day, and so in the aftermath, parents were separated from their kids, and this is the children's hospital here, and doctors say that it is as if you were witnessing a massive car crash with 50 or more kids brought in at once, and many of them without their parents so they struggled to identify the kids even as they were trying to treat them with the massive injuries, and the way they describe them is that it is graphic stuff, but essentially that limbs were twist and mangled and massive chest injuries and qui

atika shubert is right outside of that hospital in nice, and what can you tell us about the victi victims, atika? >> yeah, we are near the hospital that is the one closest to the scene of the attack, and this is the road where the truck began the attack, and that is the long veil hospital over there, the blue glass building. what we have been learning from the doctors is that they have rushed in expecting dozens of injured to be brought in, but they were shocked at how many of the injured were children. there are still 28 children being treated inside of that hospital. and we now know that five, and we earlier heard three from one do doctor, but we have confirmed that five are in very soarous condition, critical care. one of them has still been unidentify unidentified a 10-year-old boy, and they can't find his parents which is another problem from the doctors that in addition to the massive blunt trauma injuries, they have been trying to simply identify the kids, because they became separated from their parents in the chaos. most of the families have been reunited, but there is still that

atika shubert outside the hospital.e'll get back to atika for updates whenever that comes, thank you so much. >>> u.s. officials confirm at least two americans were killed in the attack. the austin, american statesmen newspaper in texas reports the victims were sean copeland and that little boy, 11-year-old brodie, his son. they were in nice for a family vacation. >> now their friends and family in lakeway texas are all grieving. on the phone with us now is brodie's baseball coach. coach, thanks for being with us, our condolences to you and your community. how did you find out about this horrific news? >> we're very close in the hill country and we are families connected to the copelands as we are and we were up in new york for a national tournament and one of the parents broke the news to us after we played our last game and it's very devastate. we're all trying to get back to texas to join the rest of the family. >> it's understandable. sean copeland's niece, coach, tweeted, i don't even know how to put this in words.

cnn's atika shubert joining us from the scene. us more, atika. >> carol, police have just allowed us into the crime scene. this is quite extraordinary because they haven't quite cleaned it up. take a look at this. it gives you a sense of what was happening. i can see blood stains. this chair in particular seems to be twisted out and its black blown out, also some blood here, and i believe this may be where the main force of the explosion was. there's a lot of press walking in and out here. you can see the chalk outline here used by police to draw where the body of the attacker was found. he was the only one killed in the attack but more than a dozen others were injured. to give you a sense of the force of the explosion, it wasn't that big, but you can see a crack in a number of cases, also cracked through here. what we know from police is that he packed explosives into his bag, but he also packed metal bolts, ball bearings and screws to cause maximum damage and that's what it looks like came right hue there. more than a dozen peop

atika shubert is outside one of the hospitals there. atika, that's one of the headlines coming out of what is france's president had to say. the large number of children who are among the critical. >> reporter: that's right. in fact, we're right outside the children's hospital, where 28 of those children remain in intensive care here. some of the very serious injuries. part of it was not only that of the children that were actually in the way of the truck that were hit, but also caught in the stampede to get out afterwards. so we're seeing horrific injuries, catastrophic fac tures, the things you would see in a car accident for example. doctors have been up all night trying to treat many of them. they have special pediatric surgeons on-site. overnight, two of the children did pass away. seeing these high numbers of children as victims is very unusual in these kinds of attacks that we've been seeing in france. the reason we see so many children victims, this was a family event. it was like the fourth of july. everyone was out to see the f

joining us live is atika shubert. hospitals today and yesterday as well talking a lot about the children. do you have updates as far as injuries go? >> reporter: well, still 28 children remain in the hospital -- quite a few still remain in the hospital. some of them discharged but five were in serious condition yesterday. one has stabilized and another still however teetering between life and death. we have spoken to families today and there's been frankly some good news and bad news. in good news that one of the victims that was unidentified, a young boy we know as 7 1/2 years old has been identified as a w romanian national and relatives have come and identified him but may well be his parents died in the attack as well. still trying to find parents and identify them. spoke to another family whose 4-year-old son remains in a coma. as we were speaking to the family, they got a call telling them to come upstairs. he stopped breathing on his own, now on an artificial res pier ator and this is the kind of raw emotion ha

we have atika shubert there. with people there, he'll address the world. atika, what is the latest? >> reporter: well, french president francois hollande is inside meeting with victims, their family and also the doctors that were up all night in these incredibly difficult conditions, treating these horrific injuries. a lot of the adults were brought here, children were also transferred to a specialized pediatric surgery unit to a different hospital. two children died overnight. 28 are still in hospital now, with critical injuries. the types of injuries we've been talking about, speaking to some of the hospital staff, these horrific catastrophic fractures, the kinds of things you would see in a horrible car accident. it really is traumatic to see these kinds of sceneses, and that's one of the reasons we've been seeing a psychological trauma unit helping people to deal with this kind of a horrible event. >> it is heart breaking. thank you so much. that's where the french president is, as soon as he comes out, we ex
