instead today we hit backward ation. the spot vix got up over 24. futures were out there at around 21 and 20 in october and september. so that means to me, judge, that that is the kind of capitulation and/or panic that would you hope for. especially if we're almost down 9% to josh's point from some of the recent highs. >> i would say like the thing with the vix is not to worry about the numerical value of where it's trading. i think the thing is to keep in mind what the spike has been. and it's pretty pronounced. you're about 50% above the 10-day moving average for the vix. so if you were, you know, if you want to kind of think about that contextually, you haven't seen it since august 2011, a reference i made earlier in the show. this is what actual panic looks like. this is the most important thing. the vix is not predictive. it's a coincident indicator. it was asleep in july while all of this stuff was building up beneath the surface, it wasn't telling you anything. it didn't tell you anything until this week in which case it was already too late.
