but a part of the atlanta campaign. in addition to this, the federals constructed a line of defenses opposite each one of these lines. in addition to that, after they captured atlanta, the federals dug their own city defenses for their own purposes. you do not have to remember all of these 18 lines but i think it is pretty impressive to have it on a slide to look at it. those are the dates they were held. it is hundreds of miles of earthworks dug by both sides. there are estimates of it and i do not know how accurate they are, but they are literally hundreds of miles if you add them all together. the lines surrounding atlanta itself were 15 miles of continuous trenches, both union and confederate. not all of those 18 confederate lines were equally strong. here's an interesting thing. the confederate army of tennessee had to learn how to dig in. they did not know it from the beginning. they had to learn it. in the first confederate fortified line at dalton, partly because of inexperience and partly because of the terrain

he is an atlanta boy. importantly, in westend, that's where he met our mother, peggy elizabeth denham. this was the bible belt. they met at weston baptist youth church. he attended a high school and wanted to pursue a career in the army. not because he wanted to go to war but because he wanted an education. i gave a version of this talk to history students and i emphasize the g.i. bill was a game changer because prior to that, college was for the elite. he was not that. and he also wanted to have a very dependable job. this was the depression years, 1938, 1939. he wanted to have a very supportive, dependable job. i throw this in, he was the class president, and i throw this in because he really was a leader of men. very social. he was just a natural leader. he was also an overachiever. [laughter] if you look here. and a lot of these, he was president or vice president. a lot of these are kind of academic. chemistry club. he was very social as well. he was the lieutenant at his rotc unit. my mother was his

no other metro atlanta program was able to reach that. what about those children they going to court proceedings without that volunteer by their side? they have been re-victimized. what about the children in foster care today that identify as lgbtq? what kind of message has this action given to the group of kids? the message i hear is that they lost a positive role model when the county fired me, but it tells those children their lives no matter. what about all the great people i got to know in the gay recreational softball league never interested in volunteering that businesses refer to as the gay community in atlanta? i was recruiting volunteers for the softball league. i was securing financial sponsorship for not only my program but the state organization and other programs throughout the metro atlanta area. once again the message i here today from that wonderful group of people is you are not welcome different dissipates in a clayton county court program because of who you are, how you identify, or who you love. that is wrong. >> i ho

i actually live in atlanta. it is one of the five counties in metropolitan atlanta. one of the lawsuits was gerald bostic, a social care worker in the clayton county system, and had worked for the county for some time. what he alleges basically is that he was doing fine in his job and was well regarded, and when they found out he was a member of a gay softball league, they tried to ratchet up the scrutiny of his performance. basicallyn audit, and -- and they said the audit turned up something, and we are firing you. and he is saying that's just a pretext, and that i was subjected to discrimination when they found out i was in a gay softball league. and here's the way these cases work. cases were both cases where the plaintiff theoyees won below, and employers asked the supreme court to review those, the supreme court said yes. the bostic case is the reverse of that because the court in atlanta -- what is interesting about the court in atlanta, and i know this well because i did the case before that that led to , when weg this one started off to do this work many year

i was born in atlanta in 1955 but my parent were yankee jews who moved to atlanta before i was born. you can imagine, we weren't really considered southerners be to make it worse or better, my mother got involved in the campaign to desegregate the public schools in atlanta. so i spent a lot of my childhood dreaming of leaving atlanta for europe. which i knew about from the metal line books. - - matta --madeline books. [laughter] but looking back, your life starts to have a shape when you get to be a certain age. i'm glad i grew up in the south at a time where they were clear ideas of right and wrong innocence of progress. that's what probably led me to study philosophy although i probably wouldn't have admitted at the time and moral philosophy. i was working on a dissertation on - - for which it was easy to get a fellowship to spend a year studying in berlin in 1982. it was a time when very few americans and even fewer jewish americans set foot in the place. in fact, my mother told me, what will i tell my friends? [laughter] spending a whole year in germany. what i said at the time,
