priya sridhar has more from atlanta. >> reporter: i'm here outside the carter center in atlanta where they have confirmed that the 39th president of the united states, jimmy carter, did pass away at the age of 100, making him the longest-living president of the united states. he, of course, was born here in georgia, began his career in politics here, entering the state senate, being elected to the state senate and then to the governor's house here in atlanta. he of course went on to the white house. and we're hearing an outpouring of condolences from world leaders and former presidents who are remembering him and his accomplishments. he, of course, came back to georgia after his time in washington, d.c. and started the carter center, where he worked for decades, doing humanitarian work, trying to eradicate diseases around the world. he traveled to move than 80 cocountries, also monitoring elections. and all of that work ultimately earned him the nobel peace prize. he also, in addition to all his professional accomplishments is being remembered as a devoted husband and loving father. o

now here at atlanta's hartsfield jackson international airport. the wait time right now at tsa is about 12 to 15 minutes. so it's not too bad. the officials out here tell us that they expect to see a well over 357,000 passengers make their way through this airport today. it is the busiest day of the travel year for the folks here in atlanta. of course, with the number of people that are traveling across the country, we are starting to see a growing number of flight delays and cancellations. as of this hour, over 2000 flights in the u.s. have been delayed, and just about 64 flights have been canceled. a lot of this, in part because of some of the some of this bad weather that is making its way through the south here now are some passengers that we talked to just a few minutes ago on why they decided to book an early morning flight always in the morning, never at night get an early start. >> and that way if something happens, you have time at the end to make up for it. >> arrive early. be patient. yeah. that's it. really the key to everything. >> al

now let's go to priya veeder in atlanta. the reactions you are seeing and hearing at the carter center in these initial moments after president carter's passing? >> yeah, jonathan. in addition to all of the presidents that mike was just speaking about, here in georgia we're seeing so many regular georgians come out to pay their respects to former president carter, leaving candles, flowers, and even a chalkboard outside of the carter center here with a sign saying, we love you, president carter. so, this is -- president carter is very beloved in the state of georgia. as jose mentioned in his report earlier in the hour, you know, he was relatively unknown outside of the state of georgia before he went to the white house. he came from the small town of plains, which has a population of about 500 people, just three hours away from atlanta. and i think a lot of the things that he mentioned throughout his report, his humility, the fact that he was down to earth. and he really, sort of, embodied that american dream. he was the son
