while grant keeps lee's army bottled up around petersberg and richmond, sherman captured atlanta, georgia, in 1864. on december 16 the army of the cumberland under general george h. thomas crushed tennessee the confederate second largest field army and one week later general sherman completes his march from atlanta to the sea by presented the city of savannah georgia to president abraham lincoln as a christmas gift. now sherman is looking ahead to his next campaign. he's going to make a march through the carolinas, moving his army group northward to richmond, virginia. there he will join forces with general grant and together they will crush lee's army and bring the war to a victorious conclusion. sherman plans to launch his campaign in january of 1865 but torrential winter rains prevent that from happening. so he is forced to delay his campaign for the following month. in the meantime, general grant decides to launch a second expedition to capture fort fisher and in to close wilmington, north carolina the last sea port in the confederacy and in effect close the lifeline of the confederac

i lived in charleston, south carolina and atlanta, georgia for 20 years respectively. i am a person that did not understand the civil war when i was growing up. it was glossed over in our education. it didn't really mean much to me when i lived in georgia and south carolina. i caught the civil war fever terribly. when they raise the hundley, it was just -- i now have a closet full of memorabilia and a collection and maps and pictures of people. the people that i am around now my family and my friends that i've lived with for years, they gloss over it. they want to hurry by my office. they don't want to talk about it. they don't want to look at the picture. they view me as an oddity. i read so much about it, i started getting into autobiographies by northrop and frederick douglass and mary chestnut. it is a wound that has not healed in the united states. you talk about the park service. we need to do something here out on the west coast. there's not very much. it is like the relative you don't want to talk about. i would like your comments on that. host: thanks, diane.
