take a look at the mid atlantic. washington, d.c., we could be looking at a foot, maybe even more and possibly some blizzard conditions for parts of new jersey and into delaware. take a look at some of the totals we could see when it's all said and done. some areas could see two feet of snow. we are looking at a big one here as this moves through. the forecast for the rest of the day does call for a wet mess in the south. mid atlantic, we will see more snow. we'll see that snow pick up later on into the evening and the overnight hours. so this storm will continue on into saturday. that's your regional forecast. now here's what's happening closer to home. and you can sigh we are goiee w see a bit of a mess in philadelphia. tampa, temperatures in the lower 70s. chicago, right around the freezing mark with a little bit of snow. looking nice in phoenix, 70 degrees. so we're going to be watching for a wintry mess for sure, lynn. >> yeah. we've all heard about it. let's see if this weekend will be a hibernation weekend. i

the track is going to take is skimming past cape hatteras and then out over the atlantic ocean.we are in the cold air north of the storm center, and that means snow. we will talk about how much, coming up. >> these are the biggest storms on the board ever in baltimore. february 2003 is when we set the record. it produced more than 28 inches of snow. that is now the standard in baltimore. the january 1922 storm was a big one, especially down in washington d.c. a lot of people are comparing this one to the february 2003 storm. the one this past december was #seven on the list. temperatures are still just at or above freezing in many areas, but getting colder as we speak. without the sun, the radiation is still comes through the cloud deck. it will get colder overnight tonight, as the storm to the south begins to approach. one system has pushed into kentucky. it looks like this becomes the dominant feature and it moves off the carolina coast, rapidly strengthening overnight and pushing and all that moisture to our region. we think there'll be a mix to the south and east as the stor

conditions are as bad as they will get during wenter in the mid-atlantic. another two inch evers before it is said and done. and then we get going. 6:00 p.m. to midnight, six to 12 inches. probably hear thunder and see lightning and that's common with a storm of this magnitude and a storm that is this intense. and then midnight to 6:00 a.m., an additional six to eight inches. remember, 12 to 20 inches. only average downtown 18 inches for the entire season. it will wind down on saturday, two to four inches in the morning. probably one to two in the afternoon. but again near blizzard conditions tonight. and that is something we are really trying to hammer home. look at the satellite picture radar combined. look at this moisture. when you get storms out of the gulf of mexico and go to the atlantic ocean it pretty much has an unlimbed amount of moisture and almost winter hurricanes quite frankly. so this has got, in terms of moisture, we talked about this last night, no pun intended the sky is the limit in terms of moisture. the cold air is a little lacking. we

blizzard conditions across the chesapeake and atlantic ocean. let give you in reference has this winter been a snowy one. this is the seventh snowiest ever. we are getting close to the snowiest winter of all time. the main concern is heavy snow pushing in out of the south and west. we are beginning to get the first round of this wintry weather over the last couple of hours. much more moisture back across the central united states. back through the south. two areas of low pressure. it will be a one, two punch and a lot of moisture will be drawn in off the atlantic as this storm begins to move out to sea during the day tomorrow. we think heaviest snow overnight tonight. then a steady lighter snow tomorrow. timing wise it gets heaviy overnight. this is midnight. you can see sleet mixing in further south in maryland. as we go into the day tomorrow it will be all snow as colder air works into the system. finally the snow will begin to relent tomorrow afternoon into tomorrow night tapering off. we think in its weak a foot and a half of heavy wet snow.

we'll take these two, merge them across the mid-atlantic. this is what you want to see.much are we going to get? the moisture available for this storm on average is about 2 inches of liquid and a normal storm would translate to 20 inches of snow. it starts as heavy, wet snow. we mix in sleet and maybe freezing rain. we lose a few hours of potential accumulation. back in the mountains, west virginia and virginia, 36 inches is legitimate. an average of 1 to 2 feet through d.c. the wide range is dependent on who winds up with the sleet and how long. then the snow picks up as the temperatures get colder tomorrow winding one 10 to 15 inches, maybe higher amounts. you have to figure in the colder temperatures tomorrow need fluffier flakes which changes the whole competition and squeezing out more snow. snow and sleet in baltimore begins between 10:00 and noon downtown and back towards carroll county. go to the eastern shore, you'll have more of that mix with warmer temperatures when you go all snow by tomorrow morning. let's see what's happening on the roads with kim. >>> traf

bat more, philadelphia and atlantic city all poised to set snowfall records. today, the latest storm kicked off in the midwest. treacherous roads were the rule. from illinois to michigan to ohio. >> here's the bulls-eye. >> big snowflakes coming through. >> 6 to 12 inch snowfall. >> there is a winter storm warning in effect. >> reporter: and tonight, the storm is pushing east. >> this is the worst winter i've had to experience. >> we've never had two storms of this magnitude this close together before, so it should be interesting to see. >> reporter: here's why this storm is difficult to forecast. we're watching two loums move across the country. one wet, and one car rig it own snow. they're supposed to form together as one big storm on wednesday and it's a very narrow band of heavy snow. if the storm is a little farther out in the atlantic, we miss that narrow band of snow. if it moves closer to the coast, that means more sleet, and that brings the snowfall totals down, as well. as the forecast stands tonight, d.c. is expecting 8 to 12 inches of snow. baltimo

as we take a look up the atlantic seaboard, 45 degrees at boston. new york city at 42. and so we're pretty consistent right now along the mid- atlantic as to where our temperatures are at least from d.c. to the north. to the south it's tellly just a little bit -- it's actually just a little bit warmer and areas to the west just the opposite. here's a look at those winds right now. they have died down substantially. take a look. only about 3 to 10 mile per hour winds across the area. they were really gusty earlier today. it was kind of hang on to your hat weather. ouwindchill factors aren't too far off the mark. feels like into the 40s and 30s, mid up toker 30s pretty much every -- mid- to upper 30s pretty much everywhere across the area. we are keeping an eye on the temperatures that will be moving our way as we head into the extended period because we have precipitation headed our way. take a look across areas of the northern plains pushing its way to central portions of the country. temperatures here into the 20s and the 30s. let's take a look at radar. we're going to

it hasn't even tapped the atlantic for moisture. that's going to happen tomorrow.hat will happen is the storm will move off to the east and northwest. it'll interact with the warm waters of the -- of the gulf stream and notice e my weather terms of the gulf stream waters and that's going to energize the storm and head to the north and northeast and out to sea but in the process, it is going to drag this moisture up and generate its own from the atlantic and mix up the cold air and it is done deal for a major winter storm. let's look at the warning map. it is widespread and starts at 10:00 tomorrow morning to 10:00 p.m. saturday night and beyond the viewing area and well beyond. this is the position we expect mid day tomorrow evening. the storm developing off the carolina coast and it will move along and off the coast and again bring up the moisture and heavy rain and flood watches and more moisture in the specific and throw it back and mix it around in the cold air. this is pretty much the configuration of this disruptive snow. snow that makes a difference. the sma

philadelphia, baltimore, washington, atlantic city, we'll all break records. the coastal lose should become the dominant one early tomorrow morning. a mix of rain and snow along the coast. then as it pulls away it turns to all snow late tomorrow night and moves away. here is what we expect as far as accumulations by late tomorrow night. in the midwest, anywhere from three to six inches. some areas as much as nine inches from chicago, cleveland to erie, pennsylvania. along the eastern seaboard, wind gusts 50 to 55 miles per hour. possibility of blizzard-like conditions. from baltimore to philadelphia, we expect the heaviest, up to 20 inches. in new york city, close to 16 inches. as we move as far south as washington, another seven to 14 inches of snow. we'll update this for you tomorrow morning on "wake up with al" on the weather channel and "the today show" starting at 7:00. >> al, thanks. we'll see you in the morning. >>> now we turn to what has become the largest consumer product crisis in recent memory in this country, the growing number of toyota recalls.

we are going to watch in the low pulls up in the atlantic.ant snow fall. lots of moisture coming our way it looks like with the cold air in place. we are talking about the gulf being for business, the weather business. that means that there's significant snow possibility for friday night into your saturday especially. for today, a northwest wind at 5-15 miles per hour. the skies should clear this afternoon, should turn part partly cloudy to partly sunny. back to the west, about the same 39 unless you're looking into the higher elevation areas in which it could be cooler and could be a couple of up slope showers there. tonight clear skies, 26 degrees for the overnight with a northwest wind at 5-10 miles per hour. 39 degrees for the high today which will come sometime between 12 and 2:00, 35 degrees for the noontime temperature and the temperatures back up to 35 at 6:00 as the skies continue to clear. 37 on your friday with some snow moving in friday night and into your saturday. then again the heavy snow for saturday and then 31 degrees mostly

more energy off the atlantic coast as another load starts to form. that brings in the energy with cold air and brings us the snow temperatures outside this morning -- some of us are above freezing and we may climb into the mid 30's for a little bit before the temperatures drop and the snow starts to fall. becoming a storm system off the coast, and that will kind of wallop us later tonight and tomorrow morning. snow will continue tomorrow afternoon before it moves out, and right now looks like sunday and monday, we're good with sunshine. snow here by this afternoon. look at this -- tonight, tomorrow morning, tomorrow afternoon, tomorrow evening, starting to move out sunday. we will expect that snow for a good 36 hours. best chance, about 20 inches. some areas have the possibility of hitting 30. south of town, a little bit less. if we get 18 inches of snow, we could be in the top three winter storms in d.c. lisa baden, what is happening? >>> i was watching you guys this morning and you were showing video of the grocery stores backed up all the way down
