welcome to the atlantic council economic center. my name is julia friedlander, senior fellow and deputy director [inaudible] economics and i have the pleasure today to welcome my former boss from the department justin muzinich for discussions on the transatlantic economy. he will start with opening remarks and switch over to a moderated conversation with former national security adviser and executivadvisorand executive atlantic council, steve hadley. i would like to extend a few thanks to some of our partners who are here with us today. thank you very much. and now without further ado, i will turn over to you. thank you, julia and to steve hadley for moderating the discussion. congratulations on the opening of the center for geoeconomics. having spent time looking at your goals, the center is an extremely timely and worthwhile undertaking. more broadly, now more than ever, the atlantic council's mission of fostering a strong transatlantic relationship is important. covid-19 has disrupted the economy and our way of life. as the world

thank you to the atlantic council and for hosting this. she and i are good friends and have been for all these years. thank you for wanting to talk about this because i think what is happening is very important right now. missus bush, you have been an advocate for the rights of afghan women for all of 20 years now. tell us why this is personal for you. >> when the spotlight turned what we saw was a failed country because half of the population was left out. i remember what it was like. women couldn't leave without being covered and without a male escort. because of the years of the war already, many were widows. they didn't have someone to be able to leave their house. and remember the other part. they couldn't be educated. they couldn't go to school. the idea of a country that leaves half of the population out is a failed country and that is what afghanistan was. >> and you knew you could use that platform to be an advocate for them as well. >> i brought some who started school in the province. television had blown up those sixth century

congratulations to the atlantic council for the opening of the center for geoeconomics. after having looked at your goals, it's an extremely timely undertaking. more broadly now more than ever, the atlantic council's mission of a strange transatlantic relationship. covid-19 has affected our way of life. as a look to the future, that the right values guide us in a post-covid world. that's why the transatlantic relationship so important. it represents over 40% of the world's gdp and nearly half of global personal consumption. but it is about much more than the economy. it is a community of values that we cherish and live by and are prepared to defend. our common belief in liberty and democracy makes this partnership a cornerstone of world stability. i believe that the pandemic has only highlighted how important our shared values are. i would like to focus the first part of my remarks today on the response to the pandemic in the united states and europe. and then turn to several transatlantic policy areas where cooperation, based on shared values is essential. specifically

bush institute, i am paula i'm on the board of the atlantic council and vice chair of the center for strategy and security. today's conversation comes at a very crucial time for afghanistan, afghanistan sits at a very key inflection point with peace negotiations currently ongoing between the taliban and the afghan government, though these talks give hope for an inch of decades of war in afghanistan, they also do raise certain concerns, it is truly vital that we remain vigilant in protecting the goals and gains that have been made on behalf of women and girls rights in afghanistan as well as those marginalized voices more generally, and the last two decades particularly as the negotiations have been underway the peace talks represent a major opportunity to really ensure that these gains are cemented. i'd like to mention that back in september when these talks began and got underway, at the time initiated by former secretary of state madeleine albright, the atlantic council of the advisory board, she initiated a statement, over 100 former heads of states, prime ministers, foreign minis

but the wind is pushing a long way gci’oss the wind is pushing a long way across the atlantic towardss which will rip up some rough and dangerous seas to the west of the uk and ireland, and that is something to be wary. it is in the west and across the english channel coastal counties where we will see the showers at their most frequent, their heaviest and with hail and thunder mixed in. fewer showers the further east you are with a better chance of holding onto sunshine for longer. shetland though will see cloud and rain persist and for all of us, a cooler day than we saw today. as we go to wednesday evening, some of the showers will fade and some will keep going in western scotland for a time but there's more cloud waiting in the winds and a deepening area of low pressure around the system in the north atlantic which will bring more persistent rain and a lift in temperatures as we go into thursday. some fairly windy conditions developing through the day, persistent rain moving to the north—east and by the end of the afternoon brightening up in the south, a milder day and milder weat
