city, george. >> we're going to get to all that fun in just a bit. >>> but we begin with the winter storm hitting the east coast. >> rough next 36 hours for mid-atlantics. although, it's a very small, narrow storm, it will have major cities in its eye. we're looking at on the radar, the "gma" storm site radar. a lot of moisture. snow getting into roanoke, danville, greensboro. but this will spread to washington and philadelphia, and as far south as new york city. look at the snowfall totals. 12 to 20 inches of snow, from baltimore, washington, d.c., as far north as philadelphia. then, it cuts out quickly into new york. the one city that seems to be in the bull's eye in this storm, is washington, d.c. and our david kerley is there to talk about how they're handling it this morning. good morning, david. >> reporter: right in the middle. we're just hours away. calling it historic, a monster, record-setting. and the federal government has heard the forecasts. in fact, they're shutting down at midday. only four hours today and people are able to head home. traffic's so light this morning, it looks like a lot of private sector folks are staying he, as well.

lot of people are grumpy now, across the northeast and through the mid-atlantic region, the good news is, i-95 corridor, big citiesl miss this one and i'm not saying you will not see anything, you could see snow, a wintry mix and/or rain from d.c., up towards new york city an boston, and, it won't be a blockbuster storm, that is my good news and across the ohio river valley, mountains of west virginia, you will see measurement snowfall, let's look at the ohio valley, across the great lakes as well, down towards indianapolis and columbus and you do get 3-6, ten inches owe snow and then, folks in kentucky, seeing more snow for them into west virginia and the mountains will certainly get quite a bit of snow up to a foot or more and then the rain, a chilly rain across the southeast for the most part but we could see mixing again, let's look at the futurecast, as we go further in time and there is overnight tonight, there is new york city, but we're not expecting a whole lot of accumulation, 1-3 inches and we have rain with that, so that will cut down on the snow amounts and the bull's-eye will be new england and i thi

i was thinking that in atlantic, today's students, at spelman and other places in the city, take for granted the changes that have taken place. the fact that students can travel anywhere they want, go to any store, each at any restaurant -- it was not always that way, of course. i want to share with you an editorial that was written in 1960 by students, students in the land set university center, the president of the student government -- students in the atlanta university center, the president of the student government. they got together and wrote an editorial that appeared in the "atlanta constitution" in 1960 and inspired a series of protests. many think of the student activism in the atlanta region as being led by dr. king, but it was initially triggered by students. he supported them in their activism. i want to share with you briefly, because it was quite a remarkable statement -- "an appeal for human-rights." atlantic. and that will be actually picking up the winds creating blizzard like conditions. and also bringing more snowfall. so this is not a good situation. winter storm warnings from new york city, all the way down the eastern seaboard. stretching back through the midwest. over pittsburg, back to mick michigan and this is a major storm that is affecting a lot of people. once again, we're included in this. until 7 p.m. wednesday. as we have the potential of the storm pushing out finally. timing of it. looking at heavy snowfall tonight. and heavy amounts of snow through the afternoon. and then the winds will wrap in behind this system. so it will be really blustery out there. through the afternoon. 14 to 20 plus inches possibly across baltimore through the dc area. southern tip of the state seven to 14. and we can look at about 15 to 22 inches as you get to cecil and wilmington and philadelphia. higher amounts the further north you go across the susquehanna. so heavy snowfall. expect to see the snow picking up pace through the morning. and then we deal with the winds. winds gusting 40 to 50 miles per hour potentially. almost like hurricane-force winds out there on the eastern par

atlantic region. there is more snow out to the west but it is not really a part of this system that just came through. it will not impact us. i mean could some of you city a snow shower later in the morning? sure but it is not likely. that would be to the north and west of the district. for the most part, we are done with the precipitation until friday. right now, reagan national airport reporting a temperature of 32 degrees. relative humidity, 88%. they are also reporting fog and mist. the forecast for washington for today, early snow showe possible but they're pushing out. some afternoon sunshine will make its presence known. high today about 41 degrees. that is below normal. our normal high would be 44 degrees. we'll have more on the forecast and the upcoming storm in just a few minutes. >> we talked about getting around it and all the slush out there. >> you hit the nail on the head. i think today what we're deal wings a lot of that slush. we don't want to tech it for granted. -- i think today what wear dealing with is a lot of that lush. we have one guy would has spun out and he is along the left side of the roadway and up against the guard rail. w
