this is south carolina avenue here in atlantic city. they're worried because high tide is going to be in about five and a half hours from now and when that happens, you have storm surge that could get to maybe one to two feet and heavy winds pushing the already high tides into atlantic city. some of the low lying streets like this one and there could be flooding here and they're really worried about that because that happened. that happened earlier this month with a 13-inch snowstorm here in atlantic city. they are really worried about this. the mayor marty small told me that what he is telling people, they've actually sent out flyers. they put flyers on people's cars saying get your cars off the streets. they have to get the cars out of the way so first responders, snowplowers, professionals can come here and do their work on the streets and clear the streets while the storm is going on but marty small said that he is really strongly encouraging people just don't go out in this stuff because it is dangerous. the wind is really going to

this is a main artery into atlantic city. good news is this has since reopened, so you see the plows at work, even though we're in the throes of the blizzard and the snow won't end for a couple more hours. they are still working to get these streets plowed. what they're worried about, fredricka, is there is residual flood water in that intersection. we just crossed over it. what the mayor of atlantic city, marty small, said he's worried about some of that floodwater from high tide earlier in the coming hours will freeze and present a lot of treacherous conditions, a lot of dangers for motorists. we're seeing an inordinate amount of people still on the roads and in vehicles. the governor and the mayor are saying stop, that get back home, stay home, ride this out for a few more hours. they are seeing the downside, you know, starting to taper off a little bit. the snow is going to continue for at least a couple more hours, fredricka, so still a lot of danger, a lot of potential problems for people who try to venture out in this.

atlantic city, new jersey, mayor marty small joins us with more on how the blizzard is impacting his mayor small, how much snow did you get? >> yes. how you doing, jon? in spite of the storm, it's a great day here in the city of atlantic city. we got 15 inches of snow which is in the middle point where we were forecast, 12-18 inches. street flooding and more, but our professionals did a magnificent job of keeping the atlantic city residents safe and secure during the storm. jon: obviously tourism is a big part of what drives the atlantic city economy. is this going to hurt ya? >> not necessarily. i mean, you know, we had some restaurants close which, you know, atlantic city is known for its restaurants. our casinos never close. they only closed during the hurricane sandy or if it was a state budget shutdown, and i'm sure they're happy a because no one is, you know, leaving their property at this time. but, you know, i want to give a big kudos to our fine men and women many our public works department and our contractors. they've done a magnificent job clearing the streets. and also to

we're told by our cnn weather team that about 10 to 14 inches of snow has already fallen here in atlantic cityand the snow is going to end in about three hours we're told, but the blizzard warning will continue until about 4:00 p.m. eastern time. you can see down here atlantic avenue, visibility still very poor. however lots of vehicles on the road. many of them snowplows, emergency crews. even in the middle of all this, they are trying to get some of these roads plowed. here comes a snow plow right here going south on atlantic avenue. and they have been plowing side streets throughout this area of atlantic city. so they are trying to get ahead of some of the conditions so people can get out on the road once the snow stops. but again, if you see this vehicle traffic here on atlantic avenue, this is something that governor phil murphy and the mayor have told people just don't do this. do not venture out. we're still told by city officials that people are getting stuck on the roads. trying to come out and do stuff like this. so, again, they are telling people do not venture out. sit this one out

trish hartman is in atlantic city. good morning, trish. >> reporter: janai, good morning. snowy atlantic city, new jersey, as you can see the snow is still coming down. one of the bigger issues today is the strong winds that are blowing the snow around this morning and almost blowing us over at certain points this morning. this is arctic avenue aptly named this morning here in atlantic city where you can see a lot of equipment is out trying to clear the snow. new jersey is under a state of emergency because of these blizzard conditions today. officials warning people to stay off the roads and to stay home. fortunately, the storm falling on a saturday so we haven't seen a ton of traffic out there this morning but even some of these larger trucks we just saw are spinning their tires in all of this snow. the atlantic city expressway even this morning had snow on it when we were on it this morning. very slick conditions. concerns tidal flooding here at the shore hearing about closed roads in atlantic city because of flooding so that's something we are keeping an eye on as well

brian todd is in atlantic city where you are officially meeting the criteria from a blizzard and it's not over, right? >> reporter: it is not over yet, fredricka. we're told that the snow is supposed to stop around 2:00 p.m. eastern time, about an hour from now. it doesn't look like it's letting up. the wind has let up a little bit, but again, it's still pretty severe. we look down pacific avenue here, some people are venn cherring out on foot. you've got some vehicles down there that are pulled over the side but also some plowings have been coming up and down here. they've been doing that, i have to say, through the height of this blizzard that has hit atlantic city from the moment it started last night, out and trying to keep the streets plowed. for the most part, i think they've done a really, really good job of it because some of the main drags have stayed plowed. now you have the situation where it's going to be the big dig. they have to dig walkways out. this atlantic bar and grill, you have a snow drift there that's partially snow that was plowed but also partially drift. peopl

he is actually in atlantic city, new jersey. brian, you've been seeing the whiteout conditions and it doesn't appear that much has changed. >> reporter: they haven't changed too much. i can tell you that as far as good news, we are getting a little bit of good news, it has been bad news all morning long, but now time for a little bit of good news. governor murphy was talking about the power outages. and he said that there are only about 1,000 throughout the state, lower than they expected. that is good news. about a third of those are here in atlantic county and you can see why. visibility is still very poor here. you can barely see down pacific avenue. maybe a block or two down this way. and down south carolina avenue this way, visibility is even worse. but we do have some other good news to report. one of the main arteries in this city, route 40, which goes in and out of atlantic city, that had to be shut down a few hours ago because of flooding. that has since reopened. so that is good news. as you can see, the wind speed her
