. >> when i go up to an atm.at should i look for that stands out at me that this is not in the right place. >> this particular skimming device is obvious. usually they fit the face of the atm. it looks like it belongs there. what you want to do is kind of fiddle around with the face of the atm. if you can pull something off, obviously that's a skimming device. >> atm insertion area should look like this. there shouldn't be a box over it or anything like that, right? >> sometimes the colors and plastics all match up. you want to fiddle around with that. the most important thing is if you see something on the face like this, anything at all, a brochure holder, the most important thing is to cover up that keypad with your other hand. that way if there's any camera that picks up the pin code, they can't see it. you cover it up and can't get the pin code. >> i thought this was the bank's camera looking at me when in reality it's looking down at the keypad. >> in new york state they have mirrors to see what's going on

they linger in front of the atms for a long time. police have enough video of these guys to make a documentary. they have the pictures. they just don't have the people. >> certainly characterize these people as bold and brazen. >> reporter: and they are for the most part getting away with it. >> unfortunately, we have not made a large number of arrests in these types of cases. >> reporter: in one scene you can see the suspect take the skimming device from his shirt pocket, give it the once over and then later insert it into the machine. they use these devices to steal financial data and then use that information to buy everything from gas, groceries to expensive electronic gadgets. these surveillance pictures were all taken in the month of july at navy federal credit unions in fairfax county. they were hit 12 times. why navy federal? police say the skimming devices are custom made for different atms. a few months ago they say it was sun trust. last month navy federal. next month who knows? >> these suspects create these skimming devi

, this is where crooks are stealing our credit and debit card information at the gas station or at atmshow does that work? >> when you take that out of your pocket and you swipe it, all your information is collected and it is september to a series of -- sent to a series of location. to the bank where your card is from, and a location that helps to process every transaction. then it is sent back, and it says it is okay. and we take our things and we go. but our information is vulnerable at any pop of those points along the way. this is a crime that affects us locally, but also has international roots. >> this is costing us and the economy billions of dollars. who are the people behind this? >> you know, they can come from asia, europe, eastern europe, it is worldwide. if they get a good program or worm is what they call it, and it gets into a banking institution, they can begin collecting our data. oftentimes they don't use that right away. they hold it and then use it all at once. >> when i'm getting gas or atm is there anything on that unit that says you could possibly be vulnerable to
