she -- we found several of these in the attic, adhesive boxes. she also, of course, collected a lot of things to use in the field. one of the really bags that i like is the salt bag from the period. salt was very, very important to the diet. many of the foods were preserved in salt. of course, people liked to use salt as a spice, so salt was really a premium during the war. a little more socially we found up there in the attic one of these carpet slippers. actually, we found more than one of them, but we just have one out here. believe it or not, this is a carpet slipper that you would lounge around with in the house, probably belonged to edward shaw. men at that time wore very fancy things, especially when they were at home, smoking jackets and smoking caps and carpet slippers, that kind of thing. so it's really not very unusual. down on the end here we have an oil haverstack, an oil cloth haverstack, it has an oil cloth book in here from 1857 that we believe belonged to edward shaw, and another thing is we're going through the inventory and cat

some of the really, really interesting finds that we got in the attic were socks. we got -- we found many, many, many socks, and -- and sock tops and tock bottoms that were separated as well as lots of rags and pieces of cloth. what i love about these is that the soldier's footprints are still in these socks, and you can see this one, it looks like quite a bit of blood on that sock. clara would have taken these from the hospitals and collected them because socks were at a premium, and they would have wanted to reuse as much material as possible, and back in the 19th century, the way you did that, was you could separate the top of the sock from the bottom because you can see the bottom is where most of the wear takes place. you've got holes in the heels and toes, that kind of thing. you can reuse the top and throw away the bottom part so she would have gathered up as much of those as possible so that she could join new sock tops or old sock tops to new sock bottoms, and then those some could be used again. very conservative way to look at things, and i suspect what

we were digging through some papers in the attic. there were all these peach baskets and bushels and boxes stuffed with family papers, about 30,000 pages of family papers it would eventually turn out. one of my students became very interested in a particular member of this family. we've been told by decedents through the oral history that there was a man in the family who in 1861 had to face a very difficult choice over which side he was going to go with, as many marylanders did. this student of mine, a guy named jim, became very interested in this story. jim is a marine interested in military history and said he wanted to get to the bottom of this dilemma faced in early 1861. he said he wanted to write his term paper using the papers up in the attic of this house. and i said, gosh, jim, you know, there are 13 generations of papers. there is no guarantee you're going to find anything from 1861 about this guy, but he persisted. we went back. we started looking for the papers. one of the first things i pulled out of a box was a bundle

and the attic was used for nothing in lincoln's time. i mean, it was a barn of a house. the only known picture of the east room as lincoln knew it is this one. this came from a flea market in ellicott city, maryland. but you had to piece it together. the ceiling was painted in franklin pierce's time. the chandeliers came in under andrew jackson and were made into gas by polk in 1847. and the furniture is all from various times. the mantelpiece is from franklin pierce. but it was changed very quickly by andrew johnson because it was so worn out. and this is the lincoln east room. this is where it was as -- more or less as finished by andrew jackson in 1829-30. it was completely remodeled by general grant. and all the parts in '73 for his daughter's wedding. and all the ports vanished. nobody knows where those light fixtures and things were. but some of the furniture has surfaced and is back at the white house. when lincoln dined in the state dining room, they used the plateau which james monroe had bought in the era of good feelings in france, had his agents buy. it's rar
