hey, audrey. okay, so you guys have been doing some live looks in d.c, because that's the big story of the day, of course, is the inauguration of donald trump. so we're going to show you the celebrations happening in the bay area, including in san francisco, this bar right here, his supporters calling this christmas all over again. but there's also the other side, a display of resistance. they're calling it from another group. this over concns about promises the president made on the campaign trail and again today about immigration. so we're going to dig into all of that and muc for rangers in new york state. that's after a bull moose fell through the ice of a frozen lake. this happened at around 11:00 on thursday. in the morning, someone was watching as the moose started to cross the lake. suddenly it broke through the ice. rangers used a chainsaw and picks to cut a path, leading the moose to a thicker section of ice. they then used sleds to guide it down the channel. moose quickly crawled out, b

yes, audrey. most counties in the bay area have a rapid response network where people can call to report ice activity in their neighborhoods, but we found out one county does not currently have an immigration hotline. okay, so an alert has already been sent out. the rapid response network hotlinesre operating all over the bay area, are in danger of being arrested or deported by using this video to advertise their services. the network is made up of various immigrant rights groups and immigration attorneys, respond to ice sightings and raids, and provide support to those facing deportation. it would also likely send someone out to the site to verify, to talk to other witnesses or, you know, do other steps to verify, like get footage from security cameras if possible. get footage from from, you know, the muni, if that's part of the, you know, site of the of the potential arrest. sonika mahajan is part of the rapid response network in san francisco that she says is primarily funded by the city. but n

a lot of things, audrey. one of them creates new penalties for criminals who have those stolen items in return and intend to either sell or return them, even to the store. governor newsom signed ten of these bills at a home depot back in august and here in san jose, but they take effect today. and one says if you stolen over $950 worth of items, even if they're from different stores and in different counties, prosecutors can add those crimes up and charge you with grand theft. another allows stores to file a restraining order against you if you stolen from the and ban you from entering the business for two years. prop 36 passed by voters also went into effect two weeks ago. it allows for tougher penalties for property crimes along with fentanyl trafficking. it's important to get california back under control. we shouldn't have to go into stores and have the items we'd like to purchase in cases and have to get help, or they're simply not on the shelves because they've been removed with with no consequences. an

audrey. all right. vianey, thank you. closer to home, an investigation is underway after an apartment fire in san jose. this started at around 2:00 this afternoon on los gatos almaden road, not too far from good samaritan hospital. you see right here. video shows the flames smoke coming out of that roof there. firefighters say the complex was evacuated. thankfully, no one was hurt. they did have to rescue one cat. crews are investigating what exactly started that fire, which damaged eight apartments in two buildings on capitol hill. it is day three of the trump admistration, and the house is sending the first bill to president trump's desk, aimed at cracking down on illegal immigration. the republican led house passed an amended version of the laken riley act this afternoon. it requires ice to detain undocumented immigrants who are charged, arrested or convicted for committing acts of burglary, theft, larceny or shoplifting. two amendments also included the assault of a law enforcement officer and ax causing death or bodi

audrey asistio nbc, bay area news. audrey. thank you. we want to get back to some breaking news now in southern california. a new fire in riverside county has prompted evacuation warnings. cal fire says this broke out around 5 p.m. near the santa ana river, about three miles from the riverside municipal airport. it's burned so far, about 40 acres, and is currently 40% contained. even further south, the fire in san diego county is now 100% contained. that's good news. it burned just three acres. it was called the friar fire. one apartment was damaged. also in san diego county. crews now have the lilac fire 50% contained. this one started around 1 a.m. it's burned around 85 acres. all evacuation orders and warnings have been lifted. tonight, those new fires broke out as crews in l.a. county continue to fight the palisades and eaton fires. the palisades fire is currently 65% contained. the eaton fire near the pasadena area is now 89% contained. a red flag warning remains in effect for parts of southern california through thursday evening. s

i'm raj mathai and i'm audrey asistio. we are beginning tonight with some bizarre twists in the january 17th stabbing death of a vallejo man. the man actually survived a similar attack two years ago. he was set to testify in that case this spring. and adding to the mystery, it's now been revealed that the suspect in his killing has a connection to another recent homicide. here's nbc bay area's jodi hernandez. it's really nice. nice. nice neighbor. that's how neighbors describe 82 year old curtis linde, who was savagely stabbed to death in front of his vallejo property on january 17th by a suspect who may have been trying to silence him. he cut the neck. it's tragic that our victim in another case has been victimized again and this time lost his life. linde miraculously survived a similar attack in 2022, when his disgruntled tenants allegedly attacked him, impaling him with a samurai sword. he lost an eye, but survived. linde was scheduled to testify against the attackers at their trial in april. it's tragic, and it shakes

and i'm audrey asistio.ighght is far from over in los angeles as major fires continue to burn across southern california. although firefighters have been able to make some progress in the battle against the palisades and eaton fires. last tuesday, the palisades fire sparked in pacific palisades between santa monica and malibu. so far, flames have scorched more than 23,000 acres, but the fire didn't actually grow overnight. containment is at 19%, up slightly from this time yesterday. the eaton fire in altadena has burned more than 14,000 acres. it's 45% contained since the flames broke out last week. the eaton and palisades fires have claimed the lives of 25 people, with 88,000 people still evacuated from their homes. meanwhile, many celebrities and l.a. natives have spent their time helping evacuees. today, actress eva longoria volunteered at a resource center in pasadena, handing out all sorts of supplies there to those who can't get home. two major fires have destroyed an estimated 10,000 structures, leavi

nbc's audrey asistio has more on their journey. round of applause from a group of eager volunteers as 30 shelter pets from southern california arrived at the san francisco spca tonight. we have a pretty exciting evening happening right now because it's all about saving animals. volunteer wants to come over. i have a dog hanging out. it's been quite the journey for these animals. flying from l.a. county to moffett field this afternoon. they came from three different shelters in southern california downy, lancaster and carson, all overwhelmed and over capacity due to the out-of-control wildfires. shelter workers say many of the fire victims coming in are either injured, burned or separated from their families. they've had hundreds of animals coming to them from the fires with no room to put them, which is exactly why we went down the 19 dogs and 11 cats that arrived in the bay area this afternoon aren't from the l.a. fire zones. rather, they were already at the southern california shelters looking to be adopted, and now they're in sf

nbc bay area's audrey asistio joins us with that story.in less than a minute last night. tesla cameras capture a man in a hoodie walking on the crosswalk in downtown redwood city. he takes a couple glances at a white tesla before taking out a spray can and vandalizing the cybertruck right in front of it. the word he leaves behind nazi. i was shocked. i honestly, i immediately, for the first time in downtown redwood city, i felt scared. the owner of the cybertruck, amanda lopez, was out for dinner when the vandalism happened. afraid she immediately reported the crime to redwood city police. the department is now investigating. last night it was pretty clear, like at 741, that someone saw the truck and decided that they wanted to target the truck. lopez saying it was also clear that she wasn't the target. she comes from a family of migrant farm workers. her fiance is born and raised in the bay area, and their families are from mexico and el salvador. she adds that she has parked in the same area many times before. lopez believes the target w
