augie is a producer for cnn in the bay area. tell us again what you experienced there. >> yes, well it's actually about 25 miles south of the epicenter in san francisco proper, and it felt like a pretty good quake. it was one of the rolling types of quakes, so it wasn't a super sharp jolt, but it was sort of a consistent rolling, soft type quake that lasted i'd say 25 or 30 seconds and you know, it ought have to caused a fair amount of damage up in the north bay in terms of cleaning up shelves and things like that. closer you get to the quake the heavier the shaking should have been. so we're seeing a lot of pictures of damaged stores and shelves and kitchens and that sort of stuff. the unreinforced masonry buildings would probably be the ones to be the most concerned about. >> i'm sorry, the what? >> the unreinforced masonry buildings. >> right. >> brick buildings, those are typically the ones that are the older buildings in that part of the bay area, and the less strong in a quake like this. >> we're getting reports from the u

i know, augie, it's just beginning to be daybreak, and it will take a while to figure out damages or any injuries, but what can you tell us from the reporting of our california crew? >> yes, good morning, candy. we're still about 30 minutes away from sunrise out here, so it will be a lot easier to survey the damage once there's light, but so far we're hearing that there are some minor entrapments up near the epicenter in napa that some chimneys have fallen, appliances dislocated, lots of damage to store shelves and kitchens, that sort of thing. there have been a couple of fires, but so far it sounds like there haven't been any widespread reports of injuries as a result of this quake. >> augie martin, we will be back with you when daylight shines over california, to get a better picture what have has gone on there. we want to go now to jennifer gray, she's in the cnn weather center. jennifer, tell us a little bit about the epicenter, where did this hit? >> this happened about six miles south of napa, and ever since this happened the wee hours of this morning, we've been feeling afters

i want to bring in cnn producer augy martin in san francisco. from the ground what have you seen and heard on the ground there? >> reporter: with day break about 30 minutes ago the light ought to help authorities with their efforts to survey the damage and try to rescue those that are trapped. i am actually in san francisco proper about 25 miles south of the epicenter. it was a fairly good shake down here that lasted for about 25 or 30 seconds. it was a softer rolling type earthquake. sometimes we get these very sharp jolts. this was one of the earthquakes that was more of a rolling type of earthquake. it was felt over a very wide spread area. some earthquakes are felt not over a very wide area typically because they are deeper. this was felt over a very wide area down to san jose and south of there. it did take place in napa on a fault that was not the san andreas fault which is the one that typically gets the publicity, but in famed wine country. >> we are playing live pictures from the quake area today. we are seeing a house on fire there. th

we started getting all of these pictures of broken dishes, cnn producer augie martin is on the phonei had somebody write saying that it felt like rolling long movements versus short ones. describe to me what you felt this morning. >> yes, that's right. typically, they either feel like a soft sort of rolling type earthquake or they have a very sharp sort of fast jolting type pace. this was definitely a softer rolling type earthquake. i'm about 25 miles from the epicenter in san francisco, and obviously depends on what type of soil you're on, those up in napa tend to be on more of a sand type soil, what used to be the bottom of the bay and san francisco some folks are on sand and some are on bedrock. so it really can depend on what type of ground you're on top of during the earthquake. to me, it certainly felt like a softer rolling type earthquake and that sounds like the majority of folks felt that way. >> jim daniels, on twitter or facebook said i had enough time to consider if i needed to get up, decide if i needed to grab anything, grab a sweater and shoes before it finally stopped
