augusta, georgia, which holds the tournalt could take the biggest brunt with size and snow in the next 24 hours. >> i've been tracking snow, freezing ice and glaze across parts of the south-east. in fact, we are going to continue with freezing rain and sleet giving ice accumulation on powerlines and trees. texas to south carolina are coming from the east. behind the storm is wind gusts, snapping trees and knocking limbs on to the powerlines. as we get through the day, georgia and the carolinas will have ice coming down. the highest accumulation will be in central georgia, up to an inch of ice accumulating. it's likely. we are looking at georgia, this is where we have the warnings. we'll put snow on top of that, adding 4-8 inches of snow. this is impacting not only texas, but mississippi. alabama. ice accumulations tapering off for parts of texas, louisville, and mississippi. it will be continuing as it works towards the eastern sea board and snow will pile up. they are going to have higher hills, mountains in the south-east accumulate up to a foot of snow. again, that, again, is on top

there's augusta and it was felt all the way in atlanta up to asheville over toward columbia, south carolina. interesting. it's not that unusual, but it's interesting. there are fault lines in the southeast. 36 in rockville, 35 in lovettsville, 37 in leesburg, very few folks below freezing. someone reston is 31 and laurel, but most folks are above freezing. so we'll keep it a yellow alert tomorrow morning, a conversational clipper, if you will, light snow or snow showers. a little accumulation except in the mountains. it's really an elevation driven snow and surface temperatures too warm for problems in the metro area and because it won't snow hard it won't overcome that. here's the map. 4 inches in cumberland, 6 inches in oakland but very little in the metro area, a lot of zeros and .1s. it won't stick on the roads. overnight mostly cloudy, cold, light snow, rain south and east, lows 27 to 34, winds east, northeast at 10. in the morning a few flakes early but still above freezing, low 30s 9:00, 11:00 still flakes, no worries. 1 clock getting windy and -- 1:00 getting windy and beginning to

so ice levels continue up to an inch of ice from augusta to columbia, all the way up into raleigh and up into southern and central parts of virginia. and as this system makes its way up into the coast this is the 32-degree line, you can see the rain and snow making its way west of i-95. as the snow deepens the low pressure moves up the coast. we are looking at snow accumulations that start heavier in the south and start to taper off a little bit. asheville, eight to ten, seven and ten in charlotte, roanoke, brian we're looking at five to eight inches of snow in new york city. and vermont could see the biggest amount, 16 inches of snow. >> ten inches in asheville alone, they're not built for that accumulation, and all the wires down for a long time. al roker, part of our team, thank you. >>> almost perverse to say this given the suffering going on in the u.s. tonight, but here at the olympic winter games, the story was the warm weather today, close to 60 degrees. and that is not good for the conditions or for the athletes trying to compete on the course. chris jansing in sochi tonight

this winter storm has left much of augusta, georgia, in the dark as well, from louisiana to new jersey nearly half a million homes and businesses do not have power. most are in georgia and south carolina. 17 deaths have been blamed on the storm so far. most of those due to traffic accidents and icy roads throughout the south. the storm also wreaking havoc on air travel. more than 6,000 flights cancelled today and 4,000 delayed. some airlines are already cancelling flights for tomorrow, piling up the misery for many, many travelers. chris palone is 26 miles outside of philadelphia, pennsylvania. chris, as we look at what's behind you today, it looks like you have a little bit of a break there. >> reporter: yeah, richard. actually we got about 10 inches of snow overnight. it came down very hard and fast at times, whiteout conditions, but around 9:00 or 10:00 this morning, the temperature actually climbed above that freezing mark. we had heavy rain for much of the morning and right now it's just a heavy mist, maybe just fog at this point. but of course what we're heading towards is anothe
