we know this thing went directly over augusta national a couple of hours ago. the rain is heavy, but not like the florence rain because it's not going to stop. it is just going to keep right ongoing. columbia had a bust of 40. charlotte a gust of 30. atlanta 28 moriles an hour. d.c., baltimore and even new york could pick up rain with this because there is a cold front pushing it this way. 5:00 monday this morning, not that far from mexico and cuba. a couple days later, 48 hours later, this thing was 155. but let me show you what happened at 10:00 a.m. on monday. this is the forecast from the national hurricane center. here it is. same place. here it is, hurricane, hurricane, hurricane. 120, 120 and now 50 miles an hour. that's 54 hours. that's 54 hours away from land fall. and this storm made land fall somewhere in the neighborhood of five miles away from that 54 hour forecast. kudos national hurricane center. okay, we didn't get 155, but they had land fall within ten miles one way or the other. >> yep. >> that's incredible. it just got stronger and stronger.

the time we wake up tomorrow morning should be down to a weak tropical storm somewhere over top of augustageorgia. and then it's a rain event through the carolinas. it's rare we get hurricane warnings from south georgia through the carolinas. it's going to be windy and pouring tomorrow throughout the southeast. that's going to be one of the issues. when we look back in history at this storm, it's going to be how fast it game through us. i told you about the thousand people town that they don't know if there's going to be anyone left to rebuild. but this is going down as our third lowest pressure ever recorded in a landfall in 140 years and the fifth strongest winds. this was uncharted territory with the storm. we'll see how bad it is tomorrow morning when we wake up, a lot of tree damage and millions of people without power come morning. >> apparently people got out of the way, only one tragedy so far. let's go to nbc's tammy litener who's up in albany, georgia. has it hit there? >> reporter: chris, we are getting hit with the dirty side of the storm. things have changed in the last hour,

augusta tomorrow morning, 60, 80 miles an hour. just southeast of columbia tomorrow night, midway between fayetteville and raleigh and then reach the north carolina coast near elizabeth city it looks like probably 2:00 a.m. friday. when that happens, what will happen, neil, the effects of the storm will diminish so that the storm will wind back up again. you folks in virginia beach, i've seen this before. don't be surprised if you have winds up to 60, 70 miles an hour even though the storm will be reported to have less winds. they play possum over land. as soon as they get to the water, they rev back up again. rainfall, widespread, 3-6, 12 inch amounts all the way to southeast virginia. that includes the area that was devastated by florence. there's going to be more power outages with this because it's going to continue to have strong winds inland. to the east of that track i gave you, there's tornadic activity breaking out tonight into tomorrow and that's going to be another problem with this storm. even though it's weakened and i

augusta's getting them now. just areas all over georgia feeling the effects of this storm.t's raining from this hurricane in cape coral on the southwest florida coast and in ft. meyers, tampa, up to clear water. all getting rain. live oak, gainesville, ocala, thomasville, in douglas georgia. the entire region experiencing rains from this massive hurricane that made landfall right about kendall air force base north and west of mexico beach sometime in the last hour. what's happening now is the eastern edge of panama city, the city itself, not the beaches, but the city itself, is getting pounded. they expect extreme winds, high water, especially east of the storm. sustained winds close to 130, 140 miles an hour within the city of panama city itself. along panama city beach, that 27-mile stretch, there will be damage. there will be power outages. but largely, the worst of this storm has missed panama city beach. unfortunately, it's been given to the air force base and people in apalachicola. the central pressure of this storm has dropped to 919 millibars making it an extremely

it went right over the augusta national golf course, now going over south carolina in places now that are saturated from florence that was there just a few weeks ago. so still 50 miles an hour. still raining in many spots. charlotte, columbia, you will see rain much of the day. eventually this thing goes out to sea. but d.c., you will pick up a lot of rain today. also the south towns there around d.c. may pick up around four inches of rain fall. that's where we're going to see most of that flooding possibility today. so on monday it was an 80 miles an hour storm. by monday at 10:00 a.m., it was forecast to be a major hurricane at 1:20 in that exact location. but they got the up and down wrong. remember i said yesterday you can be plus or minus 10%. they were plus or minus 20%. we always know the direction forecast is better than the speed direction. so we're worried about mexico beach. we are worried about the areas we haven't even heard from yet because every piece of communication there is gone. we're trying to get there. so is everyone else. the first responders are on the way. but

and eventually by tomorrow morning it will be near augusta. and it's still a very big large rain shield with this. here's the new forecast path. again, we're not expecting a lot of damage from here on out. so it doesn't really matter where the center goes over. we may actually see stronger gusts along the coast with that southerly inflow coming off the water tomorrow morning. so lake charleston could have -- and hilton head 40 to 50-mile-per-hour winds coming off the water and the surf will be all churned up also. but the storm path will take it into the carolinas here. winds not a big deal as we said, 40 to 45-mile-per-hour winds, that's not going to cause any problems. as far as our tropical alerts go still watching the tropical storm warnings right up the coastal areas into areas of central and north carolina for tomorrow. here's how the wind is going to look out. we're going to talk about these shadings. this is the probability of experiencing tropical storm force winds. by the time we get to tomorrow afternoon it's pretty low, about 25% t

we're going to take it towards augusta through tomorrow morning at 8:00 a.m.ll as a tropical storm, likely still a hurricane until midnight and then coming down to a tropical storm and then we'll track it through the carolinas at maybe 40, 50 miles per hour, and it's going to pour. we have tropical storm warnings all the way up through eastern north carolina and here's that rainfall projection so travel is not going to be fun on i-95 up the east coast as we go through tomorrow. looking at about 3 to 5 inches of rain, not enough to cause extreme flooding but enough to give a lot of headaches. you can get some downed trees. >> some of those areas in north and south carolina just dried out from hurricane florence. >> they don't need to be scared, nothing like florence. >> florence was moving at 3 or 4 miles per hour. >> florence was a turtle race and miserable. >> bill, you'll stay with me throughout this. let's go back to matt bradley who's in tallahassee. matt? >> hey, ali, as you can see we were talking about downed trees, there's actually one a little bit --

over augusta as the sun comes up. raining through the carolinas, 40 to maybe 50-mile-per-hour range. not a huge impact here. flood watches up the east coast, so minor problems with that also. but once again, that rain shields from atlanta to the south. we had so many crazy numbers with this storm. strongest hurricane to strike since andrew in '92. it was the third lowest pressure, the fifth strongest winds that we've ever had at a landfall recorded. our records go back to the 1800s. so many mind boggling things. before this storm, the strongest landfall in october hurricane had winds of 130. this was 155. it's not even close. it was like out of the park different than any other storm we've had in october. and, you know, the poor little communities, very unpopulated area of florida were the ones that were just crushed, they're the ones that will have to decide if they're going to rebuild their towns or not, chris. you know, as you mentioned with the report that came out the other day that was buried with all the other
