i saw the aurora borealis northern lights in atlanta this weekend. that was super the north high.inda is yeah. >> i mean, just just amazing spectacle were brought my children outside way past their bedtime. >> everybody loved it of course. headed outside this morning to see if we could see him, but not the case because we've got clouds moving in with rain but there's also the severe weather threat that's ongoing as well. so this is newly issued from the storm prediction center, a severe thunderstorm watch until roughly noon today, eastern standard or his central daylight time, i should say. here a look at this line of storms. this is called a mesoscale convective system, and it's noticed that boeing feature to it that has gotten a lot of wind and energy associated with it. so as it traverses across the border of mississippi and into alabama, it could pick up some intensity and create a swath of stronger winds and heavier rainfall across the deep south was also potential of a spin up or two of tornadoes, 5% risks today, and that extends as far our western new orleans, all the way t

down here in the bay area last night, the strongest solar storm in more than 20 years made the aurora borealis visible around the world. and we've been flooded with some stunning images like these from across the bay area. so many shots from the north bay down to walnut creek, even to santa clara. folks in south florida saw purple lights in the skies overnight as well. solar activity like this can cause problems, though, for satellites and our power grid. fema says it hasn't seen any major power impacts, and spacex says its starlink satellites are still holding up. tonight's event doesn't look quite as strong, but researchers say it could still get more intense. >> you don't have to travel to alaska, iceland or greenland to see these. aurora. they're coming to you today and it's a one in 1 in 20 year kind of an event. so don't miss out. >> scientists in the bay area are excited by more than the view stanford researcher suzanne maharajan tells us. the data from last night's event will be studied for decades. so if you do want to try to catch the view tonight, try to get away from city lights. y

clear skies after a night of the aurora borealis and then lots of warm sunny weather to start the dayve been bubbling up against many western areas of the uk. i think by the middle of the afternoon and certainly towards the end of the day we have seen some vicious down because develop across western area. it is not is coherent area. it is not is coherent area of rain, these will of course be showers and individual thunderstorms, in some areas torrential downpours, thunder and lightning, potentially flash flooding. through the course of the evening and into the early hours of monday, what is left of these storms i think will drift towards the north and the east. so, nearly two early on monday it is relatively quiet for most of us. let's look at monday's weather forecast. that high pressure, counter lucky stars, has brought settled conditions and what allowed us to look at the aurora but come monday we are seeing a low pressure sweeping into thicker cloud, outbreaks rain, imagine this low being here with us for the course of week and we would not have seen the aurora so it would not hav

that's what creates the beautiful aurora borealis. now, we don't think we're going to see colors as strong as this. but there is the possibility tonight, midnight into 4 a.m. through the overnight hours as well. we could see a little bit here in northern california. best bet would be near the california oregon border, but we still could see a few colors in the bay area. sky on and off activity this weekend. and here's the other thing. may cause gps and power grid issues because it looks like such a strong geomagnetic storm. so we're going to continue to cover this. and again, just look up and maybe we'll be able to see something pretty exciting on that front as we head through our forecast here for tomorrow. high pressure keeps it warm. we've got some patchy fog at the coastline, and the one thing that's going to be different about tomorrow as you compare it into mother's day on sunday, is that area of high pressure is going to start to move more off to the east now. it's still going to stay warm, but this system off the coastline wil

and here's another image of, you know what the aurora borealis can look like at times. and the big deal about this is the space prediction center has issued this geomagnetic storm watch in north america. it's now what they call level g5, which is the strongest level they have on a scale. going from 1 to 5. so it is very likely here through northern north america. we will see this activity now for us, it's overnight from midnight to 4 a.m. we could see some of that aurora action. and based on some of the projections really near the california oregon border would be the better bet. but still keep your eyes to the sky. maybe stay up a little bit late, look up and hopefully we'll be able to see a little something. and as we mentioned this weekend, we'll see some on and off activity that could also cause some gps and power grid issues. so we'll be all over this. we'll be covering it through your weekend forecast. okay. speaking of the weekend, we know friday night kind of gets it started. if you're headed out tonight 70 right now in san francisco and sunny skies will be down
