you mentioned, we did see that in wisconsin with the sikh temple shooting, we saw it in colorado with the a auroraith single gunmen who commit these acts of sflils. >> in this country we don't have a whole lot of thinkers when it comes to acts of violence. we see people acting out what they saw, how they saw someone else. when we see people with some ty crisis in their life, unfortunately, with 310 million americans and 280 million guns, whatever side of the gun issue you take, there is a tremendous amount of firearms in america and many times when people are trying to find way of conflict resolution, instead of talking, they choose to talk from a barrel of the gun. >> it seems we've heard a lot more of these incidents lately with high-profile ones i've mentioned, there was one in new york city at the empire state building. are we just hearing more about these? or statistically are we seeing more of these random acts of gun violence? >> i think violence breeds violence. i think that's what we see sometimes. again when people see others act out in violence, for some, that becomes the chosen way to

aurora. >> reporter: carol, madonna and even more controversy. to think colorado deadly shootings in places like aurora, we can't forget about columbine. they were a little upset and sounded off on twitter. given madonna's past, a lot of people think this is a publicity stunt. on this tour alone, let's count the ways she's generate $ her share of attention by putting a swastika on the photo of a french politician, flashing a crowd in turkey, mooning a crowd and protesting an anti-gay law in russia and i don't think those incidents even rank in madonna's top ten of absolutely outrageous stage stunts. but on this tour she's consistently brought out a fake a.k.-47 at stops on her shows and really used it as a prop. this may be a case of the local crowd being sensitive to something madonna didn't consider. perhaps there were reports that madonna was two hours late to take the stage. this is a complaint that has followed her around the world. the tickets may say 8 p.m. but madonna doesn't take the stage before 10:00 p.m. that's the real schedule. if you're going to see

colorado. when we look at what happened in aurora, what we recognize from my point of view is we need to take a comprehensive look at this whole issue of, not only guns and gun control is a part of it, but mental health is a part of it. families and education issues are a part of it. when we look at what happened in you are aoa, we recognize a bigger issue that must be addressed here if we focus on gun control, we lose the opportunity to address these issues. my point and position has been, let's make the gun control conversation about a larger, more comprehensive addressing of major problems that ail our community by the videos, violence in movies, mental issues and the breakdown of the american family. these are the issues on a broader scale, on the national level we have to address. denver can't do it alone, nor other cities across this nation. >> let me ask you about what's going on in your state in terms of the presidential campaign. this is still a battleground state. it is still too close to clearly put in the president's column. what will move the needle in colorado? >> i think when we

it was redrawn in redistricting and it now includes the city of aurora, the third largest city in colorado and it has a slight democratic edge. they have a democrat running in that seat. the congressman stumbled in to some trouble earlier this year when he made comments at a republican fund-raiser about the president and questioning whether or not in his party was an american. it was caught on videotape by a supporter who posted it to the internet because he agreed with the congressman's sentiments. he has been having to walk back from that view and being a member of the tea party caucus ever since. the difficulty is that he is not a known quantity and colorado politics. he represented denver in the state house, not aurora, so he's not well known in that district. he is probably a little further to the left than a lot of the unaffiliated voters, but it is a race i mentioned that has drawn considerable attention from the democratic congressional committee for spending in television markets in that race and it will be one to watch especially because of the experts looking at that in colorado

colorado, a state that had two of the country's deadliest massacre in 19 years. steven barten is joining me now to talk about this. he was one of 58 people wounded in the aurorat in the face and the neck. steven, good morning to you. first of all, let me ask how you're feeling. >> i'm feeling just fine. my recovery's gone remarkably well. >> well, that is certainly good news to hear. you were one of the lucky ones. what would you liked to have seen wednesday night at the first presidential debate in terms of the discussions about guns. >> i mean really any specific discussion or reference to the issue would have been great. ideally i would have loved both candidates to talk about whether they support having a background check. that's a huge issue and it would have been great to see, that especially in an auditorium ten miles from a theater where i was shot and so many others were shot. >> this certainly could come up at a later debate, which we'll discuss more about social issues but you told one of our reporters that skipping gun lays in the debate showed a lack of respect. >> i think they owed it to the people who were shot in a theater in aurora, but also

colorado. now, denver itself is likely to go blue. but arapaho county which is just right there. that county, it includes suburbs like aurora gets. it is economically mixed with an increasingly hispanic population and in 2008, president obama won it by 12 points. but in 2004, bush won it by 4 points. you can see the change. early voting from the county is now showing in arapaho. it is extremely tight. slight lead for mitt romney. so as nancy pelosi said right here on "the war room," don't agonize, organize, get out there and vote you coloradans. joining me now is molly ball, the political staff writer for atlantic magazine coming to us from washington, d.c. she's written a great article. she's visited all three of these counties that we just talked about and the article came out yesterday. molly, thank you so much for coming inside "the war room" to tell us what you found. >> thanks for having so many of the counties went for president bush in 2004 but for president obama in 2008. how is the obama campaign trying to hang on to those voters? >> well, like you were just saying, it is all about organization. what we saw in 200
