you have aurora pd around them. basically i've been told there are a number of federal agents besides atf and f.b.i., but aurora is giving us all the information. they have been pretty up front. they have coming upright away telling us what is going to happen. they warned us before the last explosion. you might want to take cover. if you feel uncomfortable take cover behind the news vehicle. ambulance folks take cover behind their ambulance. you've got that situation, a number of different agencies all around the complex. there is a major street about a block to the east of this apartment complex. so two blocks where from where i'm standing. there is traffic going up and down the street. when they prepare to debt nate something, they stop the traffic. no chance likely that something would reach the street but they want to be safe in case something was to happen and had to get an emergency vehicle out. the traffic continues to flow on that street which means they are not planning any detonations immediately but that

and we're talking everyone, local aurora pd, fire department, chemists, interestingly, were flown inom d.c. obviously, you're dealing with chemicals here. weapons. they also have brought in atf, the bureau of alcohol, tobacco, and firearms. they flew in bomb techs from atf from out of state. they also brought in some eod officials, that means explosive ordinance and disposal officials. they do expect these officials at some point to get suited up in full bomb suits when they go in the apartment. so you've got a host of experts here. >> poppy harlow, that place is certainly the focus today. that is for sure. we want to check in now with mike brooks, because we're talking about the suspect and he has been identified, by the way, as james holmes. he's a 24-year-old doctoral student at the university of colorado. and he had allegedly bought as many as 6,000 rounds with the ability to shoot up to 50 a minute. yes, 50 a minute. so we've got our law enforcement from hln expert analyst with us, mike brooks. mike, when can we expect the charges to be laid out and what happens next in terms of

>> sure, they would be on scene to assist with the aurora pd .response team to assist with gathering and collecting evidence. and also if in fact a search to be done for weapons. aurora pd and sheriff's office are verial and so i am sure they have their own resources to do that. and any assistance, they would have agents on the scene. it is a huge complex at that apartment. >> there were reports was two gunman and there was a report of the second shooter and bullets were going in another theater. but the good news that there is only one suspect and he's in police custody. what kind of interviewing would be happening. >> i suspect it would be done by the aurora police department. psychology of the profiler and the bureau is can be of assistance. and what is behind the scenes and what he said. they will provide that as well. we have a lot of work going on right now in terms of where did he get all of tharps and how did he get ahold of it. and has he been a trouble would person before? >> steve: biggest question of all, why? bill gavin, former head

>> that's when we believe -- i did speak to one source with aurora pd, they said at this point we're not sure who is going to go in, will it be local police, fbi, or atf. you will have the most experienced s.w.a.t. team going in there i would assume as the daylight hours approach, absolutely. we'll keep an eye on that. just to give you a sense how complex, how unusual this situation is, take a listen to the police chief oates and his assessment of this situation in this apartment. >> it is a very vexing problem how to enter that apartment safely. i personally have never seen anything like what the pictures show us is in there. i'm a layman when it comes to bomb stuff. i see an awful lot of wires, trip wires, jars full of ammunition, jars full of liquid. some things look like mortar rounds. we have a lot of challenges to get in there safely. >> and he has said, fare, it too take days to get through this apartment safely. it's obviously left this community really not knowing if this apartment could explode at any time. again, those around it have been evacuated. we'll keep a close eye

i just got off the phone with sergeant tim holt of aurora pd.e right behind me here at the apartment building, they're wrappi inping up. they're going to do a secondary search and if they don't find anything else that concerns them, they're going to let in the four evacuated apartment buildings, but for all that live in the suspected shooter's apartment building, they will not be allowed in for at least a few days, because they have to do a secondary search, wolf, and then they have to gather as much evidence as possible for what is going to be an intense and very thorough investigation, wolf. >> yeah, they should put those people up in a nice hotel instead of just making them wait some place else. make sure they are well taken care of. i think the community can take care of that. thanks, poppy. thanks for all that good work. >>> we're also learning more details about the suspect, including his time in california. and what he was possibly doing on a sex website. hey america, even though they don't need one, wes, clay and demarcus tried on the ne

we went through the top stairs at the back of the theater and as soon as we got up at the top the aurora pdhere quick. they were coming in with shotguns and they were clearing the building and they got us out. but then when we got out is when you really saw what happened because we didn't see anybody shot in our theater and at any time know what happened yet because it was dark and the movie was still playing until we got got outside and he we started seeing the people injured and the people laying there. you have to understand it is mostly kids. and they didn't know what to do and they are running around. >> when did you first realize that it was -- that you were safe, that the gunman might be in custody? i assume there's a initial level of chaos. i looked at the parking lot behind us and i imagine people came pouring out of the theaters. at what point did you know you western going to be killed? >> i felt safe anyway because of my faith in jesus. i knew i was safe in whatever i was doing. i really did. i didn't start thinking about it. we started picking up people laying on the ground and

you know, we heard chief dan oates of the aurora pd say that they were dealing with jars of ammo, jarsof liquid, possible mortars inside that apartment, along with wires and what he has never seen, ever before in his life. but you're going to get the special agent bomb the technicians from the fbi, from denver, and with the local law enforcement and technicians from arapahoe county, they're going to be out there this morning, again, assessing this situation, and i guess going with a plan of attack. you know, we're hearing that it's fairly sophisticated, fairly complicated. but i'm hearing that the devices are not unbeatable. that the technicians are -- there's a good possibility that they'll be able to get in there today. they're going to also have the aurora fire department back there, just bcause there is a possibility of an incendiary device going off, and they want to take all the precautions necessary. >> i think, mike, a big question this morning is, if this guy did booby trap his apartment and went to such trouble to make it so complicated and so dangerous, why would he tell pol

the aurora pd is the lead agency, being assisted by the fbi, being assisted by the atf, because you'red checks trying to trace the questions and trying to determine if there are any other weapons. the investigation will be going on for several days. >> will the fbi determine how those weapons were retrieved or -- entity on the federal investigation. >> all of the agencies will be working together. in that case of the weapon, the tracing of the weapons will probably be primarily done by atf, trying to determine whether this individual, where holmes acquired the weapons, from a gunshot, determining whether he stole the webs. again, one police agency or federal law enforcement agency is really never enough in this because they want to do as many interviews, cover as many leads as quickly as possible. they can't two one and then when they finish that do the next one, they have to do as many as possible all at once. they have to figure out -- police around the country are going to be watching for copy t copycats where people gather. >> this clearly was a very well planned attack. the gunman
