whether you were sent to a place like auschwitz? you cannot reduce it to a single factor but i have tried to list some of the factors. one is the date of your emigration application and whether it was before or after august 1938. it turned out to be a watershed, a period when the persecution of the jews in germany started to become much more dramatic and people who thought they could hang on decided it was impossible. and so the waiting list to emigrate became much longer. the valfer parents in contrast to their children applied after 19 38. sponsors and support networks in the united states were very important because you needed and from ait -- an affidavit relative to get an immigration visa. that was connected to the question of education and wealth. why am large, it was better educated people, people with resources who managed to leave. younger people were the first to try to leave and that was illustrated by the valfer family. the children had left earlier. and women, by and large, were more anxious to leave than men. in the va
