if 40% of americans know about auschwitz, that's not enough. if you know if the young people are identifying germany and italy and japan as our allies in world war two, then that is that is not enough. so the interest in education is how do you teach this new generation, future generations, and how you do it as you personal lives it you bring everything back to them that. you talk to a 19 year old about your father who was 19 and doing this. and if that doesn't motivate them in life and if that doesn't help them with something in life saying, you know, you have this potential because here's a story about my dad. so to educate today we try to bring these personal stories back however old that student we don't talk to him about the width of panzer or tiger tank tracks we don't talk about the velocity this and that it's they want to know about people their own age who either or were caught up or died in war. but that's true. and that's why you wrote this book. but i think that has tentacles as well. the reality is not hollywood. no, no hollywood.

most all of them were murdered in auschwitz.rounded up the jews they brought them to the big synagogue in the center of town and they stayed there for days while awaiting deportation. since almost everyone was killed, the synagogue essentially sat as it was the day the last jew was dragged out for 60 years. until one day someone went in and started to clean it up, thinking maybe they would do a little renovation and when they did, they started pulling wooden pews off the walls. when they did, they saw behind the walls a miracle. they sought pencils growls -- pencil drawing where the jews had written, it is 1944. we do not know where they are taking us. we need you to know we were here. we came a couple years later and saw those notes. i was struck by this incredible act of faith that these jews, awaiting their death, believed that one day there would be jews left in the world who might come back to this place and pick up their dream and find meaning in their life and death. this is a moment of political earthquake in this countr

we lost family at auschwitz, and we saw firsthand the horrors of anti-semitism. my parents' families came to the united states and both my parents served in our army and vowed to fight for the rest of their lives against anti-semitism. mr. president, when anti-semitism came to my community again early this year, judge kasubhai drew a line in the sand against that scourge, against anti-semitism. when a white supremacist attacked one of our synagogues, judge kasubhai recognized the threat when others did not. and he ordered that the anti-semitic suspect be held in jail without -- judge kasubhai came down on the side of community safety. and just last week, the white supremacist pled guilty to multiple counts of federal hate crimes, and he now faces years in prison. mr. president, i'll close with this. i believe that america and oregon will be better and safer and stronger when judge kasubhai is confirmed. i urge all my colleagues to support him. i yield the floor. the presiding officer: under the previous order, the question is on the nomination. mr. wyden: i ask f
