we spoke with obama economic advisor austan goolsbee shortly after the employment report was released. washington bureau chief darren gersh asked whether the new numbers show the economy has hit a soft patch. well, look, we face some tough headwinds in the beginning of the year and the growth raise slowed down. we knew that. i said last month when we were well above expectations for jobs and this month when we are below, you never make too much out of any one month report. what you want to do is look at slightly longer trends. and you if look over the last six months the private sector has added more than a million jobs. so i think that's the trend we want to continue and to accelerate. most of the private sector forecasters are anticipating a rebound of growth for the second half of the year. and so i think our, that is what our effort is now. the president is up every day, how do we get the growth rate up. let's get people back to work. >> gas prices have obviously been an issue for the economy, also the supply disruptions from japan following the earthquake. take those one at a tim

joining me the chairman of the council of economic advisors, austan goolsbee. so what do you have left to target that 9.1% unemployment? >> what you want to look at are what are the recent trends. because one month is not a trend. and the last six months we've added 1 million jobs in the economy. the last 15 months we've added 2 million jobs. now the president's the first to say that it's not enough and if the unemployment rate's 9%, we got a long way to go. i think the style of things that we've been trying to do are of the form, how do you help the private sector stand up and be the driver of recovery. the government role in rescue when the private sector's in free fall is very different than the moment we're in now where we're doing things like the president passed the investment subsidies to try to get businesses to build factories and buy equipment here at home. the payroll tax cut for 150 million workers. >> didn't those all start in january? >> they began in january and they will continue as we go over -- >> they've been in place for six months and we've

austan goolsbee is leaving. the latest in a string of top economic minds, the president recruited after he won the election who have now abandoned ship. a washington post abc news poll out today says about six in ten of those americans surveyed give the president poor marks on the economy and the deficit. they strongly disapprove how he's handling the issues and if the election were held today, president obama would lose to republican mitt romney. romney, who is far from an overwhelming favorite among members of his own party, have said that jobs and the economy will be central issues in his campaign. james carville, who first coined that phrase it's the economy, stupid, back in 1992, says that if job creation stays down, the 2012 race could be very rough for president obama. the economy is so bad there's a chance for civil unrest. so far nothing has been done about spending or rising gas prices, rising home prices, and expect to hear the president highlight modest gains in the economy since the worst days of 20

i asked austan goolsbee on this program last week about the jobless recovery that some economists were about. he got very angry. this is what he said. >> this is not a jobless recovery, that is an incorrect phrase. after the last recession, in this comparable period, post recession, we had lost 100,000 jobs, we've added more than 2 million jobs. there's a major difference between a jobless recovery, and a very deep hole that we're climbing our way out of. that is what -- the position we're in. >> deep hole, jobless -- is he right? they've added jobs? >> 2 million jobs have been added, christiane, so many jobs have been lost that we still have 13.5 million americans without work and another million who are too discouraged to even look for work. this is not business as usual. the president has got to come up with a jobs plan. even if he doesn't get through a republican congress, he's going to fight it and fight for americans. you can't go into an election year with this kind of unemployment. >> are you surprised that he's not more, sort of passionate on -- out in public about this? >> i

on top of all of this, the chairman of the council of economic advisers, austan goolsbee, announced last night he would be resigning to head back to the university of chicago to resume his teaching position there. so there will be some new faces certainly as they move forward to deal with this. tim geithner, the only remaining senior member of the original economic team here at the white house. so a lot of changes, but again they are trying to focus on that central question, is this just a blip or is this something longer, some larger trend that they need to be concerned about? >> what else can you tell us about this state dinner later this evening? >> reporter: well, they will be awarding chancellor merkel the medal of freedom, which is certainly a very large deal. she has expressed throughout the day how honored she is, but underlining this pomp and circumstance are some differences between the two nations, namely over libya. as you know, germany did not support the nato-led military efforts to libya. president obama and the chancellor certainly discussed that today. however, they put

>> i think the report is correct an austan goolsbee is wrong, unfortunately. [laughter] i think maybe a manufacturing renaissance in the sense that output growth in manufacturing will be stronger going forward. it actually never was that bad. there are a lot of strong manufacturing companies. there is a lot of innovation going on in the united states. on the output side, yes, there likely will be a manufacturing renaissance. it is also the case that some of the economics that the report says, the slide that was shown, was the one for cool centers but it is true for manufacturing efforts the companies are finding that having a supply chain spread around is more difficult to do then they thought it would be. maybe the savings they are getting from that are not that great. we have heard of companies that are bringing production back to the u.s. the skills issue is important on that. we will talk more about that. the number of jobs that will be in manufacturing depends a little on how successful we are in creating people with the skills that are attractive to empl

one of the interesting points that this report makes in contrast austan goolsbee, the job growth will be there in manufacturing. austan seems to thing much more optimistically about that. you have thought about manufacturing. what is your take on this? there really is a tension here. what is the prospects of a manufacturing job growth? >> i think the report is right and austan is wrong, and a portion of it. i think there may be aired manufacturing renaissance in the sense that output growth in manufacturing will be strong word going forward. it never was that bad in the past 20 years or going back, but there are a lot of strong manufacturing companies, a lot of innovation going on in the united states, and on the out of woodside, yes, there likely will be a manufacturing renaissance. it is also the case that some of the economics -- a slide that was shown -- is also true for some manufacturing activities. companies are finding that having a spot -- a supply chain spread out over the world is more difficult to deal with. maybe the savings they get from doing that are not as great. some

austan goolsbee is the guy headed out the door right now. he's going back to chicago to teach.he america's great economic thinkers and helped steer the country out of our economic crisis and so on. when you think about it, this is not the only member of the obama economic team to take a hike recently, not by a long shot. before goolsbee there was christina romer, left and went back to harvard, peter orszag left the office of management and budget and went to citigroup. it's quite a few people leaving. >> something we took note of, worthy of passing along. the next question is, have republicans pounced on this trend yet? >> oh, absolutely. they are calling the job nobody wants. they claim nobody is leaving because the policies are failing. the administration didn't get back to us when we asked specifically the turn over issue and the goolsbee issue goes back to the position that they said many times. the economy is growing, the president's policies are creating millions of jobs and they are not talking about the possibility of plain old white house job fatigue. >> maybe they wil
