government to regulate speech in these campaign-finance cases, but he has called for the court overrule austenecause of the fact that a corporation or union had more money and was able to expand significant resources and was not the corruption that the first amendment could regulate. in citizens united, the court overruled austin and cited justice thomas's reasoning. i think another important case and this line of reasoning was from 2014, when the court considered a fresh aggregate limit on campaign contributions. there is base limits, what you can give to an individual candidate, and aggregate limits, what you can give overall. in buckley, the court had upheld both of those. in mccutcheon, the court said a lot has changed since buckley. buckley only gave a few sentences to considering aggregate limits. i think you see in that opinion the court acknowledging the persuasiveness of justice thomas's reasoning about the rationale underlying buckley. he points out in his dissent there is one rationale for buckley left and he thinks the court has even given that one up. that is another example where
