he was in dissent in austin, and this is one area where he has charted a course from the beginning. i argued other cases regarding other provisions of the mccain-fine gold when alito coming on the court. those were cases where the government defending the statute lost 5-4. it is clear there are five justices on these independent expenditure issues where they feel very much that the first amendment should prevail. that said, i am not sure that is going to necessarily spread to other areas even to campaign finance law. the first case i argued was a case called beaumont. the court was 7-2, including justice kennedy, distinguished contributions from independent expenditures. so it is less clear to me that the court will continue to extend this rule about independent expenditures to contributions. i think in some sense the undercurrent of the decision is that independent expenditures do not present the same kind of questioned pro quo that contributions do. and quid pro quo is one area that the court will continue to recognize. let me say one other thing about citizens united and that try

i was in austin, texas, when it all came down and i woke up one morning though these floods in nashville pictures were incredible. my son, josh, sent me a picture of the 13th fairway at the brentwood country club, it looked like the mississippi river, except service flowing faster. today when i came in, when i flew in, i didn't really see a bunch of water. here's the thing. thank god the water is down, but thank god the people are not down. they have arisen and they're helping each other and they're praying for each other. so like i say, we're open for business. these tennessee folks, they're a hardy breed of folk. they're helping each other. i went over to the college today, they opened up the gymnasium and had 150 people in there, with little kids eating oranges and bananas and listening to this country singer they've never heard before. so people are helping out. and in times of trial, i think that's what americans do. we stand shoulder to shoulder and we help each other out. and that's what this city is doing and we're going to get passed this. >> larry: is this -- is the country mus

he is a professor at the university of texas at austin.our attention with recent pieces suggesting that federal debt and deficits should not be on the mind of american residents and in the long run, they do not matter. but said the sovereign debt crisis in europe. give us your point of view and talk about the concerns. guest: united states has important problems, unemployment is the most important. we have a catastrophe in the gulf of mexico and other challenges going forward. in that context, we spend so much time talking about the budget deficit and not just the current budget deficit, but the artifacts of the forecast for 15 years out. it is a bit strange. when you look carefully at the forecasts, it leads you to believe that they should be taken very seriously. how is this different from the situation in europe? very different. that was precipitated by a very small country, greece, whose debts are issued in a currency that does not control the euro. in order to fund itself, it has to go to the capital market where it must pay interest
