[applause] he actually tackled a couple of the members of the team that were there and prevented them from being killed in that incident. that is who we are, right? i never met him but i will meet him here in a moment. we've got a connection that i did not even know we had until i read the bio. here's the deal, people say to me what

. >>> police say a gunman who went on a rampage in austin, texas overnight fired more than 100 roundsexactly. a number of downtown buildings were targeted including police headquarters. mark albert has more. >> reporter: an overnight shooting brought austin city center to a standstill. a gunman fired shots at downtown buildings. >> many, many, many rounds were fired in downtown austin. this time of the night, that's really dangerous. >> reporter: a witness driving by said the suspect was dressed in black in a s.w.a.t. team-like uniform. >> he had the -- the automatic rifle in his hands. he was pointing up kind of at a 45-degree angle like he was shooting at the second floor. >> reporter: austin police headquarters was evacuated. officers spotted the suspect standing next to a vehicle. >> one of our officers that was out in front of the building saw the suspect. fired at the suspect. so the suspect went down. >> reporter: the gunman was killed. but it's not clear if he took his own life. >> that has not been determined at this time. and we will have to wait for the coroner's office. >>

the bars had just let out, it was a holiday, and downtown austin was crowded. reports of shots fired. we now know that hundreds of rounds police say were fired at a bb&t bank branch. also, there was a mention from the police chief there of a cylinder in front of the mexican consulate. we've been told that that was a small propane cylinder. there was a fire outside of the consulate building, but it was put out before there was any damage done to the building. now, in discussion of those cylinders, pam, we're told that when the officers approached him after he was shot by an officer who was securing horses, holding the horses with one hand and fired a single shot in the man's direction, that the officers went to him and saw there were cylinders inside the van, but they were not sure if those were explosives. he was wearing a vest. they didn't know if it was a protective vest or a suicide type vest, so they backed away and called in the bomb squad. both the vest and those cylinders were cleared. and i want to clear something up. i said shot by the officer. the med
