a part of the market a lot of automakers aren't coveting. if you open yourself up to that you have a lot more customers. that's really helping drive their sales. >> you say the other automakers aren't coveting the subprime space yet. is there a possibility they're going to see it's working for chrysler and move in as well? >> i think so. that's definitely something automakers have flirted with before. it's worked with mixed degree. chrysler is not the only one in that space. you see high numbers from kia, suzuki. i think the marketing is opening up to those type of buyers. if you look at credit scores of buyers, it's falling. there's definitely indication the market is moving that way. especially when you look at the aggregate number for the subprime market. it is increasing. >> to what extent -- auto makers don't need to offer incentives? >> you don't want to have to offer more money for somebody to come in and buy a vehicle. keep this in mind. we track this month to month. jessica knows about this. we've talked about this a couple of times

the asian automakers were also down. where did all these sales go?definitely to the european brands. shift down to texas and you see the big three and the asian automakers both were down there. european brands picking up 1 ppt 9%. down in florida, this is where the biggest losses were for the big three. domestic automakers losing 5.8% market share. europeans gaining 2.2%. what happened for the big three? well, they lost share in part because they consolidated a lot of their brands and they were building up core brands like ford and chevy. in the process they were being squeezed by the luxury brands on the high end and more competitive brands like hyundai and kia. as for the european brands they've come on strong across the board picking up market share in all ten of the largest states when it comes to auto sales. european luxury automakers are doing it two-fold. more suvs and more entry level mode models. as you take a look at shares of ford and gm, sue, keep this in mind. yes, they're both down for a number of reasons. but the market share losses, m

and it's not just the automakers domestically, the foreign automakers, look at toyota. yeah, it's fractionally positive, but hyundai's down 10%. there are a couple of exceptions out there. you've got to look at maybe a bmw, tata motors out of india, those are the exceptions to the rule when it comes to the a automakers. and it's the same thing when you look at the parts suppliers. generally speaking, investors are saying i don't see the margin growth and i don't see the next leg of growth, with one exception, borg warner because they have the turbo charges and number of technologies needed in the next generation of automobiles. >> but what we hear is about the recovery in the auto sector, particularly japanese. look at comp last year when they were having to deal with the double whammy of the thailand floods and the earthquake at home. i mean, why can't these auto stocks start to see the light at the end of the tunnel and outperform as opposed to underperforming? >> two reasons. people want to see what's going to happen in europe. even some of the foreign automakers who

. >>> automakers starting the summer season with pretty much a bang. revving up huge sales over the memorial day holiday weekend. phil lebeau is live in chicago. they had a good three-day wo weekend. >> we called around to a number of dealers. here's what we're hearing from them. essentially strong sales and traffic over the weekend. the three-day weekend for them. one virginia auto dealer said, listen, this was the best weekend since cash for clunkers back in 2009. japanese brands in particular very strong. sales surging due to a full supply. remember, a year ago because of the tsunami and the earthquake they didn't have a full supply in showrooms. some toyota dealers are saying sales would double this weekend compared to what they were last year. take a look at japanese auto stocks. since the beginning of the year they've started to move much higher relatively speaking because they've had a full supply in showrooms. look at the auto index as a whole and compare it with the dow. what you're seeing there, tyler, europe. people are still worried about t

the automakers are revving up sales. but what kind of consumers are buying? is in chicago with exclusive data. phil. >> tyler, this comes from experion. this is the first quarter data. in the question of who's buying right now? more people with subprime credit ratings. some encouraging news, repossessions down 37% in the first quarter. delinquencies also down. there you see the average credit score. its lowest since q-1 of 2008. now, the average new car auto loan also grew. people are expanding the length of the loan. it's up to 64 months now. and 6 plus-year loans are up 15.4%. average monthly loan payment $461. that's roughly on par with where it was a year ago. but look at who are taking out the auto loans. look at the three left hand side. they make up about 24% of the auto loans that are out there. and that's the group. when you take a look at the auto dealer stocks, a lot of these auto dealers are benefitting because they have expanded the loan pool. in other words, they're writing loans for people now with lower credit scores. doesn't mean they are ris
