and we do notice that some of the main arteries, wconsin avenue, connecticut avenue, are fairly passablethey haven't been touched since the start of the snow. any idea when you'll get to those streets? >> i think there are some side streets that have not been touched for a variety of reasons. that's because of, you know, they're either narrow, the cars are parked there, and it's hard for us to get a plow down them. some of them are very hilly. and so what we did yesterday, we brought in front end loaders -- front end loaders as well as bob cats and we're working on those streets that were hard to get to. but i really do think we've gotten a lot of the neighborhood streets, we just have not been able to do them right down to the pavement. and there's a difference. i mean, some of them have been plowed, you know, twice, or three times, they just need -- they need some more work and they need some help from mother nature to melt that layer of ice that's on them. >> we all have to be a little patient with this kind of weather that we've had, blizzard conditions out there for the last -- how

it happened around 1:00 this afternoon on chestnut avenue. officials say the electrical fire spread to the outside of the house filling it with smoke. everyone inside, two elderly women, two teen ajs girls and 14 pets, all escaped without injury, but have been displaced. the fire is under investigation. >>> lawmakers asked a baltimore area hospital to turn over three years of records. in january, st. joseph medical center told more than 350 patients they may have received unnecessary heart stints. a class-action lawsuit has been filed and lawmakers are looking for signs of medicare fraud. the hospital has until march 12th, to turn over the records. >>> president obama has declared maryland a disaster area because of snow damage. it's for the snow storm that hit in december. we had a record amount of snow during the three-day storm in december. eight maryland counties are eligible for federal aid to pay up to 75 percent of snow-removal costs that have far exceeded snow-removal budgets. >> we didn't make decisions based on funding. we were keep

this is a heavy band of snow and some heavy bands toward colesville and new hampshire avenue, briggs cheney road, as well. look at the wind gusts. they are here and this will be the signature of the storm. the winds are gusting at dulles to 43. 43-mile an hour gusts at national. in fact, look at how the contours are. we are in the bull's eye of the heavy snow and in the bull's eye of the high winds on the coast right now. georgetown, salisbury, gusting to only 22. visibility a quarter mile at andrews, a quarter mile at national. 1/8 of a mile at dulles and that's the criteria. you have to have 35-mile an hour winds and frequent gusts and visibility under a quarter mile or under and we are meeting that criteria. we will see what it looks like outside on the weather terrace. >> it is a blizzard. it is like a blizzard because it is a blizzard. you have to do this for three hours in a row, too. i don't think we will have a doubt of doing that, though. we came close to do it last weekend and in december but this is really truly the first time we have done this. to show you what a major pr

now, i did see one plow or grader, to be technical, up on new hampshire avenue. but he might have been just been preparing to move from point "a" to point "b." it's just not wise to get out there, folks. in downtown washington, we saw 301 closed at the nice bridge as a result of the whiteout and reduced visibility. we've had multiple accidents, folks that really don't need to be out. and again, the bottom line, we've been saying it ever since the first storm began, is you have to leave the roads open and available for crews to go out there and clean the roadways, get things repaired, and for the rescue and police and emergency crews. they need to have free access to all the roadways for folks who do get in trouble. and i've been monitoring the situation from police, fire, and rescue. and unfortunately, a lot of folks are getting sick or having heart attacks or falling down and the rescue crews have to get there. so, please, stay off the roads and let them get where they need to be. >> good advice. thanks very much, jerry. >> thank you, jerry. >>> our coverage of

we saw that on central avenue on 202.most of the main roads around the area, and even again these side streets are beginning to look really good, too. here is a note from the prince george's county department of public works. if you live in a corner house or any home that abuts public roadways like this one here, make sure you shovel your sidewalk. the homeowner here had some folks come and do this shoveling for them. that's a good thing. when you don't shovel your sidewalks, that's part of the reason they cancel school for the parents looking and thinking why aren't my kids going to school. if the sidewalks are covered in school and they can't safely walk, that's part of the decision-making process. make sure when you're shoveling that you hit the sidewalks around your house as well. if you're a real shoveller, this snow is nothing. yocan knock this out in a few minutes. i'm tracee wilkins live in largo. >> easier said than done, tracee. thank you. >>> first, a heads up for montgomery county commuters. west goudie drive
