avril: absolutely.g a look at the amount of total liabilities that evergrande has, to the tune of about $330 billion. you can imagine how much it not making any headway toward the restructuring of its offshore debt is affecting. the sentiment around the company and given this was once one of the top developers in china, really illustrates how far it has fallen. in the past two years, not much headway has been made toward their restructuring and that is a key concern for investors. kriti: property issues in china, property issues in europe. they an idiosyncratic story, but part of a sector we are watching closely when it comes to sweden. a major step toward some stabilizing, svb has agreed to sell a 1.16% holding to brookfield. sbb would get $272 million in cash injection. our bureau chief is all over this. this doesn't seem like a small amount but you look at the percentage basis and it feels kind of small. how big of a deal is this? charles: good morning. i think it is quite a big deal million. it does

avril, i thought the story was over a couple of months ago. it looks like it drags on. >> it clearly is not over. it looks like we are getting part two, part three and four of the evergrande saga. evergrande has missed bond payments. reportedly, several former executives have also been detained. this highlights that the crisis is deepening for what was once one of the top developers in the country. let's not forget that the debt is really piling up. that is raising those fears and the risk that we could see potential liquidation. that is raising concerns about what this is going to mean for the broader chinese economy, especially given the number of unfinished projects of this property developer. kriti: certainly, a lot to watch when we talk about how much of this is an idiosyncratic story. avril hong in singapore with that story. let's bring in our markets are for valerie tytel. we are coming off a massive move in the bond market. talk to us about what is top of your agenda. >> what a your medic move in the treasury market yesterday. it was o

get over to avril hung in singapore. what do you have for us?lot of negative sentiment in asia-pacific stock markets. stocks are falling to the msci asia-pacific for its first day of losses in seven sessions. a lot of these losses are being led by the hang seng on the back of tyson services pmi data which disappointed despite remaining in expansion territory. this is raising concerns about the chinese economic recovery. but we don't just have our eyes on the numbers of china. we also had inflation data out of south korea. the philippines. and thailand. all hotter than expected, raising concerns that economists have underestimated rising energy prices and the impact that might have on inflation in these respective economies. more globally as well as the scenario that's going to play out around the world. case in point we had the rba governor philip lowe saying more tightening may be needed despite keeping things unchanged for now. so down day in asia-pacific stocks. jennifer: we also have our eye on country garden. is that the outlier that change

avril: plenty is at stake. we always talk about how the central bankers are caught between a rock and hard place but for him, especially so because if you look at how the pressures is on to keeps to mess up for ueda based on the street ueda numbers coming out of japan, this morning as well it shows us how global demand is really beginning. there is expectation that he will have to keep things on the stimulus pedal but the yen depreciating is comforting that picture. so, we get the sense that the focus will not be so much on what he says or that decision but what he says after, during the press conference whether we will get more intervention or hawkish comments in defense in a way of the depreciating japanese currency. the good news in a way is that we get the sense that is a lot more -- ueda is a lot more stable and away when he committed gets to the market versus a shock and all we got from his predecessor in the stands we got from governor kuroda. kriti: avril hong explaining a really important dynamic in th

avril hong is all over that.us through it. >> we are seeing asian stocks coming under pressure for yet another session. traders not liking the sounds of higher for longer from the federal reserve. the msci asia pacific slumped as much as 1.5%. it was dragged by the tech and health care-related stocks. we're seeing weakness in msci china, headed for its lowest close since november, amid continued pessimism about the chinese economy. i want to draw your attention to japan. after we have gone through the fed, the next one happening at the end of the week, tomorrow that is, is the bank of japan. and we're seeing the reaction in the treasuries market, the jgb's i should say. there is that selloff happening. it looks like traders are bracing for hawkishness coming through from the boj and the yield on the 10-year is hitting the highest level we have seen since 2013. just to give you a sense of what we're seeing in terms of jgb's pay let's take a look at the currency, the japanese yen, because continued weakness is figu

i am joined by avril hong and valerie tytel and jill disis. i want to start with avril and singapore. how are the asian markets doing? avril: the asian markets are under pressure for another session as investors come to terms with the likelihood that we will see the protracted higher u.s. interest rates. they are also coming to terms with the relentless chinese poverty market slump -- property market slump. that is despite signs of optimism from the chinese economic data we are getting an improvement on the industrial profits. we saw an initial surge in the chinese benchmarks on the mainland and hong kong. i think the key concern here is certainly for investors in the public sector that has prompted economists surveyed bloomberg to trim the forecast for the chinese gdp for this year to 5%, still meeting 5% goal for this year but the single doubt of the property crisis is a single biggest challenge for china. certainly that comes on the back of fresh developments. we have china evergrande's founder and chairman under police control and country

avril hong joins us with an update from singapore. walk us through it. avril: good morning, kriti. we saw the asia stocks rising at the start of the session. there was optimism, cautious albeit, given u.s. cpi numbers coming in line with expectations and raising bets we could see the federal reserve pause on interest-rate hikes. we have a slightly softer dollar boosting risk appetite in the region. we are seeing outliers. soften group for one even though it is pairing losses of 2.2% earlier in the session after arm priced its ipo at the top end of the reach. the chinese benchmarks are coming under pressure today given the lingering concerns about the real estate sector. let's take a look at how they are faring. the front and center is a chinese property developer country garden. there is a deadline approaching later today for young bondholders to vote kriti: on the company's request kriti: for a repayment extension. we can see how the property gauges and hong kong of the chinese property developers is lighting as well. a wrong and singapore with a crucial market update. we are join

avril: it does not look good. there's a lot of red on the screen and negative sentiment from wall street spilling over into the asia session no thanks to that u.s. wage growth slowing which points to a sluggish economy but also how the tech mood is souring given the concerns around apple. also sk hynix and huawei. we also have japan revising down its economic growth for the second quarter. the nikkei has been underperforming compared to the major indices today. as you mentioned earlier, we have hong kong scrapping trading for the full day after already scrapping the trading for the morning session after the record rainfall that has pretty much brought the city to a standstill. let's take a look at some of the movers and shakers because these are really the ones that are dragging the regions benchmark, the msci asia pacific. it is the tech names. we can see how they are faring today. some of them are the apple suppliers and some of them of the chipmakers in south korea. continued pressure coming through in the stoc

kriti: avril hong in singapore with the crucial asia trade. avril mentioned the jgb story. let's bring in valerie to connect it to the rest of the world. your a bond girl, in both senses i would have to say. why do we care if you are not a japanese investor? >> this move is due to this treasury selloff that has captured attention not just this week, but this month. 10-year and 30-year yields rising 50 basis points in september alone, pressuring this japanese market, tempting the bank of japan to defend yield curve control again. last time they intervened was 10 basis points away from here. the trigger for them was that 10-year jgb crossing 77 basis points. it only crossed 75 for the first time in over a decade yesterday. this is capturing the attention of the bank of japan. there has been little move on the yen side. i want to go back to fixed income. yesterday was a monumental they. not just for treasuries, but what happened in gilts and goons. -- bunds. intraday, you saw gilts spike higher by 20 basis points and bunds spike higher by 15 basis points. down to the pressure

avril: yeah, it is really an unfolding story.s how the central bank in the country has asked financial petitions to review any of the relationships with a 34 individuals tied to the money laundering case. this includes 10 who were arrested last month. they are all foreigners and they are all originating from china. mes sent a note to the compliance department of the financial firms and singapore to check for special -- suspicious transactions from the beginning of 2020 according to a copy of the note seen by bloomberg news that was dated august 30. this is really underscoring the efforts to plug the gaps that have been exposed by the mid august crackdown, which was when this case came into public view. rishaad: ok, and that case, give us a sense of how this case is being seen there as well. avril: i think it has raised a lot of eyebrows in questions because of the sheer extravagance and how long this allegedly has gone on for. because we know how this alleged syndicate actually was accumulating multimillion dollar homes, ultra lu

and joining us now with more is avril benoit, the executive director of doctors without borders. you so much for being with us. one of the biggest challenges facing rescue and humanitarian crews is connectivity. you've been in touch with teams on the ground. what are they seeing? >> yes, thanks for having me. we sent several teams to morocco. they arrived on saturday. they made their way up to some of the towns in the high atlas inc including, and what they saw in their assessment visit, and they are still on the ground talking with local authorities, hospital officials, doctors, nurses who are running clinics is that the system is overwhelmed. the staff at the one clinic had been working there nonstop for 36 hours straight by the time our team arrived, you can imagine the exhaustion level. they were depleting the medical supplies that they had, and it looked like they were likely to run short. ambulances were able to transport some of the more injured people to the referral hospitals for surgery and things like that. but they continued to receive people with broken bones, with l

avril: absolutely. if you just take a look at that story across the terminal in the past hour, sk hynix investigating the presence of the chips in the latest huawei phone although the south korean chipmaker says it has not worked with huawei since u.s. sanctions. that news is not helping the price of the stock which is pairing the gains of two plus percent earlier its of the losses expected. we also had bloomberg story confirming the wall street journal reports that china is looking to ban iphones in state firms and agencies. now that report is conforming -- confirming that it is seeking to expand that ban. it is not helping the suppliers of apple heading for a day of losses and that is dragging the sentiment in the rest of the region and not helping the case. the regions benchmark is headed for a third day of losses. the chinese indices also the negative territory. you can take a look at how they are faring today and this is despite the chinese trade a tuft that came in not as bad as feared. there is e

avril: china stocks bucking the trend. negative sentiment in the region. has been some explanation for this. this is likely due to a short covering ahead of expectations over the weekend that we might get some policy support from chinese policymakers, given that they've been pushing that out for every weekend this month. i want to get you up to speed with some of the developments in the debt markets. jp morgan has included these indian government bonds into its key em index. this will start from june next year. hsbc sees this as a potential for there to be flows of about $40 billion, as much as those levels. it's a sign of the growing appeal of indian debt markets to international investors. kriti: it's interesting. the exodus coming out of a lot of asia almost in reverse. especially not just india and china but japan as well. especially when monetary policy is in focus. walk us through the market action. avril: yeah. we've been monitoring the japanese currency so closely this week, especially. we've seen it hovering near those ten-month lows against the g

avril hong walking us through the asian market story. we are waiting for monetary policy to shakeout. one story and the united states is having international ramifications. united auto workers representing three of the biggest carmakers in detroit. those negotiations are still going on. 150,000 workers are in the balance paid oliver crook is standing by in berlin. what are the latest on the negotiations? oliver: there were talks yesterday but not a huge amount of progress. the biggest offer we got from the big three is around that 20-percent marked which the president of the union said is a no go. he did the rounds of the media yesterday. he went to msnbc and npr saying a lot of things that he said previously, but saying that the ball is in their court, that they need to come up with something better than they have put out. and if they don't come out with what he called serious progress by friday, they could expand those strikes. remember, we have less than 10% of the union currently striking across three facilities. this union has the p
