it was our awardee. i'm going to tell a story that has not yet been told publicly, but i'm going to share it today. in late 2010, when the board of supervisors, when we were casting around for someone to play the role upon interim mayor, and when ed lee was still telling us he did not want to serve, i invited this man to my kitchen table, as did a number of my colleagues, to convince him. tonight we honor the career of a man who has served our city for 28 years, who has left us a legacy of which he and the entire city can be proud of. tonight, we celebrate the lifetime achievement of ed harrington. i have served on the board of education and i am pleased to announce the finalists and the awardee, allevents in education. the criteria is described in the program, i want go through it here. it is important for us to recognize community leaders with a commitment to the educational needs of our community to ensure that the next generation of pacific and asian americans are here to address the concerns. the finalists in the community leadership category are -- program director of asian american community for education. soca mao, the juvenile justice prevention commissioner. and steve no. their achievements are detailed in your program. all three are very deserving of this award, and the judges have had a hard time selecting just one winner. the recipient of the 2012 apa heritage award it is emelin. if you could please join us on stage? she is the project director of the asian-american communities for education program, administered by the japanese community youth council. she is an immigrant from the philippines. she is a first-generation college graduate of uc- berkeley, and went on to

they had 70 awardees. it was a very nice family affair. we also had lunch for the families.thank you to the foundation for helping to organize that. i attended the graduation of trainings held by parents of our public school system. all chinese speakers. it was a five day series of training. every saturday for five weeks. they are now empowered it to be active participants in education. thank you. >> thank you. i wanted to acknowledge the 2011, 2012 teacher of the month award winners. we had 10 winners. i also wanted to thank the teachers' union for their support. all of the work they did to help support us. debra from the alternative school, mrs. rogers, jason thomas,laura from spring valley, marisa martinas, and robert. congratulations to the award winners. the principle of the year awards are going to be announced in the next day or so. one was already announced. it was announced at his retirement dinner by the mayor. he is our middle school president of the -- principle of the year award winner. we had the pleasure of attending a reception with a woman could talk about a

my job is to introduce the awardees. please join me and give a hand for jay primus, george reynolds, steven lee, and lorraine fuqua. >> thank you. this is a tremendous honor. it really does feel fabulous to be recognized. one of the relief fund things about this project is that it is just complex enough and just big enough that it is truly a case where hundreds of people were required to really get it off the ground. there's really nothing -- that's the kind of thing we dream about. working shoulder to shoulder with that many people to make something happen. it has never happened before. what a pleasure. unfortunately, the mfac award is limited to four people. we are up here representing an entire team. some of that court team is here tonight, including lauren, alex, lisa foster, hank wilson, lesley, jason lee, and brendan monaghan.
