david axelrod, a longtime adviser and aide to the president, put out a memo basically saying not just is doing well among base democrats. he's doing better than republicans are in some of the key battleground states, this is what he said. he said, take a listen, despite what you hear in elite commentary, the president's support among base voters and key demographic groups stay strong. according to latest polls, the democrats approve of his performance by an h18-41 percen margin. while that may be true, there are troubling numbers for the president in the key battleground states. a really bad quinnipiac poll came out in virginia and as we know the general election battles are fought among independent voters and in virginia, a state central to the obama campaign election strategy, he split independents with john mccain. and quinnipiac poll had his disapproval among independents in virginia at 62%, only 29% of independents in virginia approved, so he's got to get his numbers right with independents, you know, the base may be there, but until he fixes his numbers among independents, he's

david axelrod, top adviser is reading the same newspaper stories the rest of us are and listening torats are afraid that they're looking at a one-term president. in a memo to sunday's show producers, which i think is interesting, axelrod said, listen, despite what you hear in elite commentary, which is the democrats' way of what republicans calm the mainstream media, the president's support among base voters and in key demographic groups has stayed strong. he cites 81% democratic voters saying they still support the president, but you and i know it it's the independent voters that sway elections. right now the president has a lot of work to do to catch up and even break even with independent voters who have left him in droves. axelrod objects, also saying, listen, the poll numbers for republicans are very low as well on capitol hill, also true, but they are running in their districts not nationwide and these are nationwide polls. and he also notes that there is no republican to put up and compare against president obama at this point because the primary season is under way. so also a

president obama's former senior aide and strategist david axelrod said the president faces a titanic struggle getting reelected in 2012 because of the sagging economy and high unemployment. the president is headed from los angeles to denver to make his last pitch for the $447 billion jobs plan. kristin well ker joins us live from denver. a heckler was shouting at the president. you can hear the crowd in the background saying four more years and this guy was going on with jesus christ and referred to the president as an anti-christ. a lot of people don't know how this man was able to get in. what do we know? >> i think the questions are still being answered, tamron. certainly a lot of concern about how he got in. secret service looking into that. i heard the president supporters there shouting four more years and we have seen protesters during the west coast trip. overall he has been greeted warmly. having said that, he is here against a really tough backdrop. a lot of people are angry about this economy. david axel rod talks about it. we have seen protesters throughout this trip. >>

david axelrod talked about a titanic struggle. part of this has been enthusiasm for democrats. your fund raising was down in august. their fund raising was down in august. the campaigns as well. what are you doing to try to fix this? >> first of all let's talk about th cancel a numr of fund raisers in july. that had a ripple effect in august. we didn't plan for president to do joint fund raisings for us in august. the republicans continued to raise money throughout the debt crisis. i say. cantor and boehner raising money while they were negotiating with the president. this is going to come down to a choice. it's a choice about whether or not we're going to physical the path that the president has set that has begun to turn the economy around. or we're going to go back to the way the republicans were doing it that got us into this mess. so part of getting the ranks is saying look. we have a choice. as the president said, it's time to stop complaining, and stop crying and get to work. >> you have a base that's enthusiastic about defeating the president. but they're not enthusiast
