david axelrod talked about a titanic struggle. part of this has been enthusiasm for democrats. your fund raising was down in august. their fund raising was down in august. the campaigns as well. what are you doing to try to fix this? >> first of all let's talk about th cancel a numr of fund raisers in july. that had a ripple effect in august. we didn't plan for president to do joint fund raisings for us in august. the republicans continued to raise money throughout the debt crisis. i say. cantor and boehner raising money while they were negotiating with the president. this is going to come down to a choice. it's a choice about whether or not we're going to physical the path that the president has set that has begun to turn the economy around. or we're going to go back to the way the republicans were doing it that got us into this mess. so part of getting the ranks is saying look. we have a choice. as the president said, it's time to stop complaining, and stop crying and get to work. >> you have a base that's enthusiastic about defeating the president. but they're not enthusiast

>> i don't think anybody can predict 14 months from now what we're going to face and as david axelrod said in this memo you referred to, we're not talking about the president running in some black box scenario. there will be an opponent. as i listen to the republican presidential nominee candidates come forward and spout their ideas and bow to the tea party and their agenda, the tea party is not very popular in america. what they brought us to in washington twice already is a confrontation that is virtually threatened to close down the government and our economy. so i don't think people like that style of politics and that's the reality of we'll be facing in november 2012. >> james carville, a democratic consultant, a true blue democrat through and through has said that those elections should cause the because to panic. he said it is time to fire someone. that the economy hasn't gotten any better as far as people are concerned and still the president is using the same economic team and as much as he respects them, it is time for them to go and get in some new blood to show the america

harvard university as a fellow at their institute of politics -- and i had a chance to talk to david axelrod last night and we agreed. we can respectfully disagree with individuals based on their politics, but you should never go after people personally, because that's why people are around the united states hold politicians in such low disregard. and people who engage in this behavior are equally reprehensible. >> mayor brown, we're going to go through a long list of these crazy accusations of the president here at the beginning of the program tonight because they are unique. it's not just people calling him the anti-christ. there are people who are saying he was born in some other country. we'll get the accusations, go across the board. what is it about obama that inspires this kind of weird, zealous hatred? >> well, i think you would have to start with the fact that he is unusual in that he is an african-american. that is an unusual thing for this country. we've been looking forward, as african-americans, to this for a very long time, but we know that there is a residual amount of racism
