david axelrod is an msnbc political analyst, and a former senate republican candidate out in california. thanks for joining us. let me start with this. we've run through the history of the republican party. david, and clearly they have been if you have to argue back and forth, they're the more hawkish party, the democrats more dovish. lear cannily the issue of the war in iraq are a war of choice was a key issue i believe and i believe you know was a key factor in the strong political run by president obama back in '08, starting in 2004. do you think the republican party is having guilt about the war in iraq they now feel is unpopular that they're beginning to think this instinctive call to arms, engagement in countries like syria, and lebanon won't pay off at the ballot box? >> first of all, i would quibble with one point which is there has been over time taft and others in the past, there's been a strain of isolationism in the republican party. it's resurge be the now represented by this tea party faction. of course, the reality is we have to find the right place between these two poin

tonight jim axelrod tells us a bigger name could be next. jim? >> that's right, braun was one of at least 15 major league baseball players under investigation for taking performance-enhancing drugs. this includes the game's highest-paid player, new york yankee alex rodriguez. an executive for a major league baseball team tells us braun's 65-game suspension could be nothing compared to what rodriguez faces. >> ball is hit well. >> reporter: the executive says it's not a matter of if rodriguez will be suspended for using performance-enhancing drugs but when. they have an overwhelming amount of evidence on this guy showing multiple years of usage. he's met with major league baseball, he's seen the evidence he is staring down a penalty much, much harsher than braun's. it could be years or even a lifetime suspension. both braun and rodriguez are on a list of players accused of using banned drugs from a now- closed anti-aging clinic in south florida run by a man named tony bosch who is now cooperating with baseball. t.j. quinn first reported the doping

i'm jim axelrod. we begin tonight with some extraordinary moments at the white house. president obama made an unannounced appearance in the briefing room this afternoon, six days after the verdict in the george zimmerman murder trial. president didn't question the verdict. but said he had some thoughts he wanted to share about the reaction to it. he then spoke for 17 and a half minutes in a remarkably personal tone about trayvon martin, race relations, and providing more support for young african- american males. bill plante joins us now from the white house, bill? >> reporter: a complete surprise, jim. and that was intentional. the president wanted to avoid raising expectations. he told his staff just yesterday that he wanted to speak out as the president, but also as an african-american. from the heart. >> when trayvon martin was first shot, i said that this could have been my son. another way of saying that is that trayvon martin could have been me 35 years ago. there are very few african- american men in this country who haven't had the experience of being followed
