i'm jim axelrod. the national basketball association is investigating what it calls disturbing and offensive comments, apparently made by a team owner. donald sterling, the owner of the los angeles clippers, is at the center of a controversy that's been exploding since this morning after the web site tmz posted audio they say is sterling making racist remarks about african americans. this is the longest tenured owner in a league whose players are mostly black. the clippers are in the middle of a play-off series, and sterling's players are said to be furious. late today, the clippers organization said it does not know if the tape is legitimate or has been altered. but as vinita nair reports, sterling did apologize to anyone who may have been hurt by the remarks attributed to him. >> reporter: tmz is not commenting on how they got the recording or why the nine-minute argument was taped, but they say it's the voice of donald sterling, owner of the l.a. clippers, making racist remarks to his girlfriend. >

jim axelrod breaks down the number. >> reporter: president obama used an impressive but misleading number to tout sign ups for the health care law. >> 35% of people who enroll through the federal marketplace are under the age of 35. >> reporter: but that number is less than it seems because 7 of the 35% is younger than the sought after 18 to 34 group, children under the age of 18. >> seven years old don't go to the exchange to sign up. what we need are 18 to 34-year-olds to sun up. the 7-year-olds are coming with mom and dad. >> reporter: white house concedes it actually has 28% of the 18 to 34 demographic in federal plans, a slight improvement. better than the last report from the states which was even lower at 20%. the president shed no light on a question repeatedly asked by both democratic and republican lawmakers, how many enrollees are paying their premiums? several companies say 15 to 20% don't even pay the first one. >> and many of those who do the pay first month's premium, won't pay the second or third month. what we really need to know is how many people sign up and stay signed
