what does it say that the ayatollah khomeini is willing to go along with much more moderate elements in iran right now? >> reporter: i think two things here. what struck me as different was that even the so-called hard liners, the revolutionary guard commander's, were speaking in lockstep with the government policy regarding the sailor issue. they accepted the american explanation that this was accidental. they were not deliberately trespassing. there was no hostile intent. they accepted that and let them go. there has been a lot of controversy about photos released. the actual fact is that they were let go and everybody was on the same page. that's different. that hasn't happened in the past. we remember back in 2004, the last time this happened, there were these british sailors, who spent 13 days being paraded, forced confessions, the worse, the worse of the worse. this did not happen this time. now, in terms of the nuclear deal, ayatollah khomeini, empowered president rouhani and foreign ministers zarif to get the best deal that they could. he kept very quiet throughout most of th
