ayman, what can you tell us? >> reporter: we just got confirmation from mayor derek armste armstead, he arrived on the scene shortly after what took place, according to mayor armstead, one officer, two officers have been injured. one shot at directly and the other appears to have been injured as a result of glas or shrapnel directed at him but the officer that was shot, we're told, was hit in the chest but actually was wearing his bulletproof vest so he will be okay according to mayor armstead. this began at about 10:30 a.m. local time according to the mayor. we do not know whether police were approaching the suspect or the suspect sees an opportunity to fire at police officers, but what resulted was a shootout and from where we are standing, we can see police have laid at least seven different markers that are often used to indicate casings or bullet casings that are on the street and according to one eyewitness that was here, there were multiple gunshots, again, according to mayor armstead, the suspect has been

. >> joining me now is foreign correspondent ayman mohyeldin. how were they able to apprehend this individual? >> reporter: chris, by any measure of the word, this was a lightning fast investigation. really with two parts. one, identifying the suspect, identifying the man that they wanted. two, ultimately apprehending him on the street behind me. the first part of that was tremendous amount of intelligence work, investigative work, starting from the scene of the explosions with things like the surveillance footage that put ahmad khan rahami on the scene of that block where the two explosives were identified, that pressure cooker and the explosion that detonat. also fingerprints, a cell phone ping that traced back to one of his cell phones led police to identify him as a person of interest. ultimately, when they went to his house in elizabeth not too far away, spoke to his family that was leaving or trying to cross the bridge. they were able to get more intelligence, more information that led them to put out that all notice bulletin, if you will,
