nbc's ayman mohyeldin has more from london. >> reporter: now that this agreement has been reached in geneva, some are saying the real hard work will begin. >> if this step. >> first step, leads to what is our ultimate goal, which is a comprehensive agreement, that will make the world safer. >> reporter: there are two components to this one compliance and two enforcements. on one hand, you have the iranian government, which has to suspend the enrichment of some of its uranium material. it also has to allow international observers almost on a daily basis to some of those key nuclear research facilities and others across the country. >> we need to start moving in the direction of restoring confidence, a direction that we have managed to move against in the past several years. >> reporter: in the meantime, the iranian government wants to see the $4 billion that it is promised by the international community to be released. these are $4 billion of iranian frozen assets held around the world. that's going to be released to the iranian government. they also want to see an easing of sanctions

we'll discuss forever wars when nbc's richard engel and ayman mohyeldin join us next on "now." >>> the war in afghanistan has already gone on for 12 years, and it looks as though it's going to go on for a lot longer. with all signs pointing to continue u.s. involvement for at least another decade. according to a draft of a key u.s. afghan security deal obtained by nbc news, the u.s. is prepared to maintain a strong military presence in the country for many years to come. the deal, which is not final and is yet to be signed by either country, would take effect on january 1st, 2015, and remain in force until the end of 2024 and beyond. the exact terms of the agreement are still up for debate. afghan officials tell nbc news they hope that the u.s. and nato will commit to 10,000 to 15,000 troops, but u.s. officials say the number of u.s. troops would be closer to 7,000 or 8,000. the report concludes that without a strong u.s. military presence, afghanistan will likely collapse into civil war. two other sticking points for the agreement, whether u.s. military personnel will be given immunit

nbc's ayman mohyeldin. joining us now democratic senator from virginia tim kaine chairman of subcommittee on near eastern and southeastern asian affairs. thank you for being here. >> you bet, ari. glad to be with you. >> let me start with reaction to what you and other senate democrats said. you put out a statement fairly measured talking about verification, talking about the path ahead. "politico" among other newspapers says it looks like democrats are breaking with that immediately. that is accurate? how are you looking at this today? >> not at all. the way i look at the announced deal, very much like the richard haass statement. he made it sound so much simpler than i made it. the way i look at the deal, the components, we stretched out the time and made it harder for iran to have nuclear weapons plutonium and increased warning system. we had good intelligence but couple that with intrusive inspections. if they decide to go towards weapons grade plutonium we'll know sooner. stretching out the time and ge

nbc's ayman mohyeldin is joining me from london.y? >> reporter: well, for the most part the countries that signed the agreement have been welcoming this news, some expressing a little bit more cautious optimism than others. really, those closest to iran, those that have had some very major political differences in the region, particularly in the persian gulf and middle east, have expressed serious reservations about this deal, particularly israel. israel, which has been at odds with the regime in tehran for some time, has come out and said this is not a historic agreement and has woarned about this deal. more importantly, in the persian gulf countries that, including saudi arabia and others, the united arab emirates came out and officially welcomed the news, saying this was a good step forward. but other sources indicate that there are many differences in the persian gulf, particularly saudi arabia, which is very concerned about this deal at this point. >> do you think the world is ready to accept an iran that is not going to pursue

ayman mohyeldin is with us from nbc. ayman, how big were the steps to gets to this agreement?, that really depends on who you ask because certainly both sides are saying there are some important deals for both sides. the united states has come out saying that this deal reverses some of iran's nuclear development that makes it even more difficult for them to obtain a nuclear weapons capability in the interim period. they're not rushing to that as these negotiations will get underway over the course of the next six months. the iranian government says they want a major concession and that is the right to enrich nuclear -- or the right to enrich uranium, part of their nuclear program. that was a big point. both sides are spinning this to be a victorious moment for their arguments over the last several days. >> what happens now do you think with the negotiations? i mention this, we've been here. we've signed interim nuclear agreements between 2003 and 2005 all of which fell apart. >> well, this time you're going to have some specifics unfold immediately, and that includes for the i
