we will have details coming up from nbc's ayman mohyeldin. as you're looking at those clouds, let's go to steve clemens, washington editor at large at "the atlantic." also an msnbc contributor. steve, give us what you know about this deal. did it go through egypt? >> well, i know very little about it right now, as i've been traveling. i've just heard that gazans are out celebrating in the streets. that's one sign that's quite good, to have something that's filtered down so much to ordinary people who have seen their lives and families and just everything about their world disrupted. i don't see that a cease-fire at this sort would have been possible without egypt, so early speculation on my part is that they were involved. and i think it's very important that they've put a longer time zone on this of 30 days. so that's showing at least a bit more gravitas on both sides about what they may have to face down the road and moving away from this scene we've been seeing. i think it helps us move from fragility into the possibility of something that

nbc's ayman mohyeldin joins me live from london. what's the status of u.s. efforts to try to build a coalition to go after isis potentially in syria? >> well, certainly the u.s. is trying to reach out to some of its arab allies, those that are in the region that are of tremendous importance, including egypt, saudi arabia, united arab emirates, probably qatar. at the same time, they're probably going to be reaching out to turkey, which is a member of nato, to try and build that coalition. now, keep in mind the united states will have the blessing of the regional powers if it does choose to carry out any type of air strikes inside syrian territory. certainly it would be welcome news from the syrian opposition and those who are backing the syrian opposition. but at the same time, the u.s. can expect there to be some diplomatic ruffle, including from china and russia to security councilmembers. i think that's why the u.s. is going to try and get the backing of not only regional allies but also key allies in the u.n. security council if, indeed, it seeks some kin

i now want to go to gaza where ayman mohyeldin is reporting live from. ust talked to a hamas spokesman. did they confirm that they have this israeli soldier alive and in captivity? >> reporter: chuck, the short answer to that is no. they're being very tight-lipped about that. keep in mind that the military wing of hamas has actually not made any kind of public statement since this operation. in fact the military wing and the political wing in times of conflict tend to be very removed from one another, up until the upper echelons of the organization and that has not yet been the case. we have not heard from either side. the spokes people here on the ground are obviously spinning this, saying this was a violation by israel of the cease-fire agreement and certainly this is as much an information war as it is a battle on the ground. in the agreement it was understood israel would maintain its ground forces in positions it already has inside gaza, but it was also very clear according to hamas they would not be allowed to advance beyond that and more importantl

nbc ayman mohyeldin joins us from live from london. have we heard anything from israel regarding the information? >> no. the israeli side, so far, has not confirmed the news of the size fear. we've heard from two different sources among hamas as well as other palestinian factions involved. there are strong signals coming out at least some type of agreement has been reached. it's coming out right now from one side. the israelis have not made any public comments about it. here is what palestinian officials are telling us from inside gaza and those inside egypt. one of the senior leaders of hamas who was involved in the negotiation said there was an agreement that had been reached and an announcement was expected to come out soon both from egypt swepgs the palestinian leadership in the west bank. details of the agreement have not yet been made public by either side. according to sources close to the palestinian factions inside gaza, they're saying they resemble the agreement put in place in 2012, which effectively would call for an end of

we'll go to nbc's foreign correspondent ayman mohyeldin live in gaza first. ayman?s up to speed on what is happening here on the ground. according to the israeli military, operations are ongoing now searching for this israeli soldier that was captured by hamas, according to the israeli military. the operations are taking place in south gaza near the city of rafa but that is as much information as they are going on. meanwhile according to palestinian health officials, the number of fatalities rising tar as a result of this morning's attacks has now climbed to above 40. hundreds more have been injured since this morning's fighting broke out between the two sides. there's been a lot of confusion as to when this happened, who broke the cease-fire and obviously, as you can imagine, both sides are accusing each other. hamas is saying that this violation of the cease-fire was by israeli soldiers who started shelling into the neighborhood of rafa but more importantly they are saying that the cease-fire at the time, according to sources here, did not, did not stipulate that

joining me now from gaza is ayman mohyeldin, great to have you here. >> reporter: thanks. >> what is happening tonight? have the attacks intensified? >> reporter: it absolutely has and it's not just night time when we do expect it to intensify more. what has happened in the last few hours, israeli ground forces have surrounded the town of rafah, we've gotten that from eyewitness accounts and residents who live there telling us that in fact the israeli military at some point have surrounded some of the open areas and outskirts of the town of rafah, many of them already have been huddling up in homes and trying to stay away from the front lines. they have been on the march since this morning's incident in the israeli military says one israeli soldier was captured and two others were killed. throughout the course of their advancement, there have been very heavy shelling taking place in and around the town of rafh, so much so that palestinian health officials are saying the death toll from that alone stands at 160 palestinians killed in this one day alone. it does undermine so much of th

ayman mohyeldin joins me from london. late last night we know the u.n. accused isis of crimes against humanity. how do you think that and the new claims of brutality could impact the u.s.' decision of whether or not to launch air strikes inside syria? >> i think it helps make the case for u.s. officials that what they are witnessing inside syria at the hands of isis is a major violation of all international laws and norms. there is nothing revolutionary or rebellious about isis' movement when it comes to what they are trying to do inside syria and iraq. given the fact the united nations is saying they are violating human rights and crimes -- and committing crimes against humanity or even war crimes, there are suggestions that would lay the groundwork and give at least a legal basis for the u.s. to get involved, certainly with the support of other countries who would then say they were doing this on a humanitarian basis, not necessarily for political or security considerations. >> nbc's ayman mohyeldin, thank you, as always. >>> even with isis' massive pr

nbc's ayman mohyeldin is inside gaza. what's the latest?> reporter: abby, you could probably hear the sounds of fighter jets above us. it's been like that throughout the course of the day. although, the shelling has not taken place in gaza city, it has been very intense in the southern part of gaza in the city of rafah. that's where an israeli soldier, according to the israeli military, was captured today. this was during ongoing operations, according to the israeli military. according to them, in addition to that individual, the captured soldier, two other israeli soldiers were killed. since then, there has been a very intense fight taking place in and around the city of rafah. according to palestinian eyewitnesses in the area, the presence of israeli soldiers has now advanced to surround the town of rafah. the israeli military saying obviously that they're engaged in a rescue operation perhaps to try and limit any chance of the militants moving the soldier out of the city. but more importantly, the people there, according to health offici

nbc's ayman mohyeldin joins me live now in from gaza. h sides obviously blaming the other for violating that cease-fire this morning. what do we actually know about what happened? >> reporter: well, we know that according to the israeli military this morning at around 9:30 a.m. local time after the cease-fire had come into place by about 90 minutes, there was an ambush on their soldiers inside the gaza strip according to the israeli military. as a result of that ambush, two soldiers were kill. one was abducted. now, the palestinian factions including hamas have not actually publicly confirmed that they have an israeli soldier in their captivity. they have not provided any proof of life, but a lot of the political leadership by the organization has alluded to the fact that there was a violation by israel as a result of that violation, the palestinian faction's military wing managed to carry out an attack in self-defense to capture that israeli soldier. that is the two competing narratives that unfolded it here. as a result of that incident

ayman mohyeldin is on the phone with us now. what more can you tell us about this missing soldier?nan, we know there's an ongoing military operation continues in the city of rafa in the southern part of the gaza strip. palestinian medical sources, hamas officials, are describing what is happening there as a massacre. according to health officials, the death toll as a result from the ongoing operation stands at 62 people killed. more than 300 yard and thousain. now the israeli military said that it has launched a rescue operation to try and contain and even recover or rescue the soldier they say was abducted by militants shortly after the cease-fire came in place. as you are suggesting, there are two narratives. the israeli military is saying a cease-fire had come into effect when its soldiers came under attack leading to the abduction of one of the soldiers and the killing two of others. also spokespersons for hamas have been saying the narrative is different. what happened is as israel tried to advance after the cease-fire to attract the brigade, the military wing of hamas was for

. >> joining me now is ayman mohyeldin on the ground. what is the latest on the ground, sir? >> craig, as you mentioned the ongoing shelling is taking place. a rescue operation from the perspective of the israeli. it's being prescribed by the palestinians as a massacre. thousands of people fleeing their homes. hundreds injured. and the death toll stands just above 40 palestinians killed. that's according to palestinian medical sources that are updating us with the tolls. depending on who you asked what happened this morning that lead to the implosion of the cease-fire is a different account. one from the israelis, one from the palestinian side. the israeli military said during the cease-fire after it started, their soldiers came under attack while they were inside gaza as they were expected to be as a result of that cease-fire agreement that was announced yesterday. that palestinians agree, they do say the israeli soldiers were allowed to stay in gaza during the cease-fire, but they say the israeli soldiers began toed a san francisco positions they had already taken and more

ayman mohyeldin is live in london. what do we know about the man who killed james foley? >> well, british officials have confirmed to nbc news they have pretty much identified the individual, they believe was responsible in the killing of james foley. they have not released the identity for a few different reasons, but one of the main sources of intelligence they've been able to gather is the actual video itself. and based on that video, they were able to determine, as you said, the accent of the individual. they were also able to use voice recognition program as well as some other type of software that was capable in identifying what they believe was the face of the individual even though he was masked at the time of the killing. there are all other reports that are still out there circulating about the authenticity of the video whether it was edited or dubbed. they're considering all the possibilities and going through the intelligence. for now, they feel confident they have at least narrowly identified the man who they believe was responsible for the killing of james f

ayman mohyeldin is following this from london. what do we know about this latest skirmish in syria?ll, we know it was, as you mentioned, one of the most intense fights that took place between the government forces of president bashar al assad and isis fighters. they say at least 370 isis fighters were killed and more than 130 syrian regime soldiers were killed. so it gives you a sense of the battle that lasted for several days but ultimately leading to isis taking over that airfield. now this was an important and strategic location for isis to take over because it was really the last stronghold for the regime in this part of syria and effectively now means that isis controls the area of ruqa and surrounding areas up into the turkish border. that's certainly going to be extremely problematic, not only for the syrian government but certainly for turkish officials as well. >> certainly troubling. we see what action it sparks from the united states. reuters is reporting that syria is offering to cooperate with any state fighting isis. we had the deputy spokesperson on saying that absolu

i'm joined by nbc's ayman mohyeldin in gaza and in tel aviv, martin fletcher. secretary kerry issued a very unusual statement on his way back from new delhi where he announced the cease-fire in the middle of the night. issued a statement condemning hamas for breaking the cease-fire. i know that that is not the perspective from the ground in gaza where they are seeing a lot of israeli rocket fire. >> that's correct. in fact, right now, hamas is saying that it was the israelis who violated the cease-fire. there is one point of agreement that has emerged today which is that, yes, both sides agreed that israeli troops would remain inside gaza, part of this 72-hour humanitarian cease-fire. that is a side -- that's a point both sides seem to agree on. what hamas is saying is that that agreement meant that israeli forces could not continue any operations inside the territory they've already taken. meaning they could not be destroying tunnels and they could not be expanding their territorial gains in areas where they have soldiers already on the ground. as a result of

joining me live is ayman mohyeld mohyeldin. we see the family referencing other hostages.ow how many hostages isis is holding potentially other american journalists. >> that's correct. in fact, you know, we have at least two different american journalists that are believed to be missing. right now given the fact that isis has spread between iraq and syria, it's hard to identify whether the miss journalists are inside syria now perhaps inside iraq. there are two among several other foreign journalists including european have been taken. it's hard to to identify who is holding them hostage. even the groups that have perhaps taken an american or foreign journalist hostage will sometimes sell them for money or ransom to other groups who may want them for different political motivations. want hostage taking business in iraq and syria has been lucrative in years. particularly when it's foreigners. the groups that may take the individuals may not necessarily be the ones that we saw yesterday in the disturbing videos, the ones that killed for political statements. >> the white hou

let's bring in nbc news foreign correspondent ayman mohyeldin live in london. if the u.s.s in syria, does that mean our objectives line up with those of bashar al assad? that is the question. >> in the short term they might and that is because the growing risk of is circumstancis and th to the united states is presenting a very dark, if you will, threat. no doubt the overall differences between the united states and the syrian government are still very stark between the two sides. i mean, obviously, the u.s. foreign policy is official calling on president bashar to step down from power so there is now doubt the u.s. is not going to be cooperating in any capacity with the syrian regime to carry out attacks against isis. in the short term there may be an alignment in interest but in the long run no plan of cooperation presented on the long run. >> it's in assad's best interest for us to stamp isis out or at least weaken them. yet we are hearing the syrian foreign ministry saying don't let this happen. are they voicing a protest they know we are going to run through nivert? >

nbc's aimmen mohyeldin is in london. ayman, what do we know about the cease-fire?> well, the institution news o cease-fire was made public by hamas and israel and other palestinian factors. it had been laid out and going to be laid out shortly by the egyptian government. shortly afterwards, 7:00 p.m. local time in cairo and the west bank both the palestinian president and egyptian officials have confirmed that a cease-fire had been reached. according to the terms of cease-fire which have not yet been made public the cease-fire would bring an end to all palestinians and no rocket fire into israel or gaza. and at the same time, a lifting or easing of the siege, if you will in the gaza strip. allowing construction supplies, food, other commodities to enter gaza from egypt. obviously as the images on the screen reveal there is a sense of elation. a sense of celebration among the palestinians in the gaza strip. hamas came out and said this was a victory for them. shortly after the cease-fire went into effect, there were the sounds of sirens in southern israel. there are
